When Baird is in the front row the Stanford strategy is set Baird. Period. That's the strategy.
ASU called twice now for being out of position for receiving serve (overlapping) which almost never happens. ASU coach is really bent out of shape.
For someone who never practices hitting, Oglivie has been really good at it thus far.

We drop the second set 19-25. Match now tied 1-1.

My recolllection is that Oflive was a very good OH in high school. At another school, she might have played OH.

Oglivie was an excellent HS OH. Recruited as the Libero where she has been very good

Oglivie's hitting IQ is better than Stanford's other pin hitters. She is going to end up with a low hitting percentage this match mostly due to the setting. I still like her at OH better than Berty.
Tufuga just served a ball thirty feet long, literally 30', on a simple easy serve. 13 SEs and counting.

In case anyone else is trying to figure out the score, as best I can tell, Stanford is down 2-1 in sets, 5-6 after a service error.
5-9 before & after the Stanford challenge.
6-9 before & after the ASU challenge.
6-11 at the Stanford timeout
15-16 at the ASU timeout.
15-19 at the Stanford timeout.
17-25 at the end of the match.

Beaven just served a ball ten feet long on a simple easy serve. 14 SEs and counting.

As predicted, Stanford without starting center MINER, best hitter KIPP and primary DS LOUGEAY, loses to both Arizona and ASU, so they're now 7-5 in-conference and 12-8 overall. That makes them officially out of the running for an NCAA Tournament seed.
And waiting for them at home next weekend are #8 UW and #22 WSU.

#17 Oregon and OSU this weekend, UW and WSU the week after.
Could OSU finally win a match against Stanford?
Probably not at Maples, even with this line up. But who knows.

Oh, thank you for the correction.
Hopefully KIPP will be available. Even without MINER, a most likely a 1-1 finish next weekend, resulting in 8-6 in-conference and 13-9 overall.

Absolutely correct.

Both are quick, slightly smaller OHs who are versatile and good passers. But this would mean moving Francis to MB (is Campbell coming back?). I know Francis has played MB, but which is her better position -- OH or MB?
Or possibly use Rubin as a sub when Francis or Baird rotates to the back row?
I like all those ideas. Campbell not coming back. She and Fidelak are part of senior night.

Could they have been trying to compensate for the weakness of the team on the floor by being (too) aggressive with their serves?

I don't think they were more aggressive than usual.
I'm fine with the usual "serve tough and accept a few SEs".
But there are times when you're struggling and you just have to get it in, to avoid killing any momentum. And it does seem like the SEs have been excessive lately.
So maybe it was the usual "serve aggressively" and jitters from the unusual line up just made things worse.

The write-up at GoStanford.com indicates there were 9 available players, but only 8 are on the stat sheet. Xu's status isn't mentioned and she wasn't on the stat sheet. So I guess she was available, but the coach chose not to play her (to let her heal better, I presume).
Whatever is going on, I hope they all are well enough and are allowed to play as soon as possible.

Hambly's preseason caution that our depth is thin and we need the players to stay healthy is playing out. If any usual starter is out we are noticeably worse; multiple starters out = disaster.

Yes, also Xu walking around with a crutch and wearing a boot would pretty much rule her out for this match. Maybe next weekend.
What I don't get is A. Smith sitting down by herself away from the other players standing on the sidelines for about half the match. I thought her only injury was to the fingers. Has Hambly lost control of this team? There was not much high-fiving of players coming off the court. There seemed to be a disconnect between the players on the sidelines and the court action as though they weren't into what was happening on the court. It's impossible for me as an outsider to know. Maybe this is my imagination or possibly the poor quality of the livestream.
