Unfortunately, our achievement is going to get second billing on Sportscenter tonight.  Baylor just lost their first game of the season, too.

Sorry for the thread drift but Ziaire Williams has 12 pts so far and is guarding Steph Curry in an entertaining game. Imagine if he had stayed!

ZW now with 17 including a couple of ‘oops.

Let's not get carried away.   The end of game management was awful, but they were bailed out by SC's complete inability to hit free throws.  I honestly think SC played the game like it was a scrimmage at times.  Still a win is a win.   So that's awesome.

Now as a Stanford fan I am in an odd, and terrible, place.   I guess I have to hope USC keeps winning as a USC win will only been seen as quality win if USC stays in the top 10 or so.

Yuk!  Hopefully Stanford will get many more quality wins, so I won't need to hope for USC's continued success.

Did I hear right that USC was playing its first game since Dec 18th?

Also, was it 2 years ago when we were flying high, jumped all over USC in the first half and then blew a 20 pt halftime lead?  I think that deflated our season back then.  Hopefully this win springboards us to bigger and better.

I only saw the second half. The lack of Stanford turnovers really stood out to me as the most pleasant surprise.

I have to also say that it truly was an inspired defensive effort by Stanford.

Stanford's offense also looked extremely competent in the second half. Ball rotation actually resulted in good shots much more often than not. Perhaps the difference is having an aggressive Spencer Jones? Really not sure if this is a switch that will stay "On," but I sure hope so.

Finally, you don't beat a top team without having a top player. Ingram had a stretch where he was the best player on the court. It is a joy watching him play when he brings his intensity level up 10 notches like he did for much of this game.

This was a great win. We'll see what the week brings, but I have real hope we will see more winning Stanford basketball.

That's right, and on my 40th birthday, no less......

Made me wonder if there really are basketball gods, and if so, what I had done to piss them off......

Actually it was much worse than that. We blew a 5 point lead with 15 seconds to go.  We had the ball and a 5 point lead.  Ended up losing in overtime.

That was the most dispiriting regular season MBB game I've ever seen.

Indeed, SC just beat up on Cal last week.

ZW got burned a time or two trying to guard Curry, and I think Curry blocked his shot once. But a great showing for a rookie nonetheless.

Coach Haase bringing out his inner Ted Lasso (in a good way). :)

Totally agree. Last year Williams occasionally guarded a "quick" and I thought it was best on the team. He's going to be a big star and he's lucky to be with Memphis.

Can't get a much better endorsement than that. Ingram is VERY impressive. He's shorter than the other bigs on the court, but he finds the ball, is strong, comes up with the rb, and has moves under there. Plus, he shoots the three at an acceptable rate and makes FTs. I'm taking a vacation from my Haase bashing. They looked organized and seemed to know what they were doing out there. Hopes for a long vacation.

I must say that in the first few minutes of the game it was apparent that USC had much better athletes than Stanford.  Early on they blocked every one of our shot attempts under the basket.  I thought to myself that we were going to get creamed.

I give credit to our coaching staff for out coaching USC.  We beat a team with better basketball players by being a better team.  If we can keep playing like this, we could beat many of our opponents.

Now, let's see how we do out on the Palouse.

Since he didn't try anymore after that difficult sequence, I'm hoping that DeLaire had a come to Jesus moment and gave up the ghost. Or, maybe he was advised by coaches that he needed to go to another move like that nice four footer off the backboard late in the game.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford 75 vs #5 USC 69 - bl82 - 01-13-2022

Total agreement about the brobdingnagian athleticism gap between USC and Stanford. We were well coached (and Enfield is always a formidable coaching opponent), but I was most impressed by how our guys never got rattled, no matter how many times they had a shot blocked, had a questionable call go against them, missed a wide open shot, gave up a big dunk, etc. Great composure.

Kudos to the coaches -- and the players.

The WSU game is brobdingnagian. We could really get a lot of momentum out of a win here and we will need some solid road wins to be selected for the tourney.
