RE: Stanford T&F - BobK - 05-14-2022

Jones leads with two events left by 51. Bad news the Javelin is next. Good news then the 800

RE: Stanford T&F - BobK - 05-14-2022

Allie Jones wins the Heptathlon. Life time best in the javelin

Ky Robinson 2nd on the Steeplechase

Someone needs to teach Ky how to hurdle. I had never watched him run the steeple before, and given his credentials in the event I was stunned to see him step on 90% of the barriers. He's not taking it to the next level in this event doing that! On the plus side, he's already borderline world class with an 8:32 PR, so in a funny way it's nice to see him hurdle so poorly given that this seems like low-hanging fruit.

Year after year, it seems as if we have nobody trained for the steeple. Given all the great 3k runners we hand every year, it seems silly that we don’t have even one runner who attempts to focus on this race. Someone (probably whoever is out 2nd best 3k runner) is missing a big opportunity.

Robinson is a trained steeplechaser
Yes he hurdlers like many Top Africans

Aragon 2nd on the 1500 plus we get 5th and 7th

No top Africans step on the barriers consistently; to be clear, no top steeplechasers in the world step on the barriers, men or women. Not for probably two generations now. The few times Ky didn't step on the barrier (I'd guess 4 out of 28) he did in fact hurdle like some of the Kenyans do in that he kicked both feet out to the side. But he's not going to maximize his potential in this event until he starts hurdling the barriers efficiently.

RE: Stanford T&F - BobK - 05-15-2022

Onwuzurike 2nd in the 100. 10.17.

Heymach 2nd in the 800 in a PR. Stanford also 5th

RE: Stanford T&F - BobK - 05-15-2022

20.09 school record Onwuzurike as he finished barely in 2nd place

King 2nd in the TJ Yang with a 2 foot PR 4th

RE: Stanford T&F - BobK - 05-15-2022

Sprout 2nd, Robinson 3rd Bowden with a PR in 5th in the 5K

Interesting, looks like Ky isn't running the steeple. Makes sense as he's ranked 8th nationally in the 5000 and 10th in the steeple. I get the sense that BobK doesn't like to criticize, but Ky is woeful at hurdling as I've said -- beyond the obvious, look no further than that his 5000 time is literally 30 seconds faster than a bunch of the guys ranked ahead of him in the steeple. Hope he crushes the 5000, think he still has a ton of upside in that event!

I knew you’d love this farm. :)

What I really love is Juliette Whittaker running 1:59.80 yesterday for #2 HS all-time! Hope she makes it to the Farm and doesn't sign a pro contract instead! :-) My goodness, she and Roisin Willis in the same class and both coming to Stanford. Amazing

Here is Juliette's race cued to the right time. She's in lane 2 wearing black. Always fascinated to see an elite mid-D runner with such a "shuffling" stride (low heel kick, low knee drive). It's rare.

Thanks coach. Hey good thing she and Robinson will have two different coaches at Stanford :)
Appreciate the video and a shout out to former Stanford star Olivia Baker with her first sub 2 minute 800

Nah, Ricardo is doing a GREAT job with the male distance runners. I'm sure Ky and coaches are not oblivious to Ky's hurdling shortcomings, but it's a lot of work to fix that maybe Ky doesn't want to do or just isn't natural enough at it. And there's an injury factor as the event beats you up.

I also think it's fairly universal that anyone (college or pro) who is equal-to-more competitive in the flat events will prefer them to the steeplechase. For example, Jenny Simpson abandoned the event when it became clear that she was Olympic class in the 1500...Evan Jager, Courtney Frerichs and Emma Coburn aren't as competitive in the flat events, etc. Ky is a mega talent and we'll see how far he can go in the 5000 and 10000 longer term. If it's not to the top ranks at the pro level, maybe he dedicates himself to the steeple as he clearly has some talent for it.

It is extremely rare for American HS students to go pro in T&F. And even if she is a "pro," generally she can still run for Stanford with NIL in place.
