So your thinking is Brown was completely blindsided and just found out from the staff that she doesn't have a scholarship for next year and now has to change her plans and is in the portal? Doubt it. These conversations don't just happen solely after the season is complete and not a minute before. Pretty sure her future with the program would have been discussed and she would have known where she stood prior to now.

That's not what I said.  Maybe, as you intimate, the staff said 'we don't see you in our plans next season' a long time ago.  So Jenna is just graduating and hoping to play somewhere else next season.

Maybe they said, we do see you in our plans and hope you can get admitted to a graduate program here.

BTW, do you think that "Admissions as a shield" is used in grad programs, too, as it was reportedly used by football with offered recruits that Stanford no longer wanted, especially under Harbs?  [I assume, but don't know, coaching staffs can signal to Admissions how badly they want player for next season].

There are LOTS of possibilities - and my point is not all of them come up roses in terms of player contentment.  And I don't think it's that controversial of a position . . . except on the Cardboard.

You may have missed that folks here are trying to explain why Jenna didn't participate in Senior Day, but then later entered the portal and participated in the banquet as a departing senior. That sequence of events gives the impression that her plans changed quickly.

I personally don't want to get into speculating on exactly why here, as I got the feeling from my brief conversation that she doesn't want to go into detail on it with fans. Of course there are lots of possibilities, including plenty that don't reflect badly on anyone.

It will be interesting to see who they use the 15th scholarship on.  I said before, I think they could also grab a dynamic wing if an elite level PG is not available and do PG by committee again. One thing for sure is they do not need bigs.

I think it is a tad irresponsible to recklessly speculate that Jenna is still injured/not cleared unless you have some inside information you are sharing. One could further speculate as is the case many times with redshirts, once it becomes apparent that they will miss a substantial portion of the year, they decide to sit out the whole year so as not to use a year of eligibility for a few games. Seems a bit speculative to use senior night as an indicia of whether someone is coming back next year as well.  I recall that Anna has attended 3 senior nights.

If the lifeblood of the Cardboard is conviviality then the lymphatic system is speculation.

RE: WBB transfer portal - Card10Fan - 04-11-2022

My sentiment is more that I feel bad Brown did not get a proper sendoff. Senior day is a celebration with parents and family all there to commemorate our exceptional student athletes and for them to celebrate with the fans. Although we are sad  as fans (that the end is here) senior day is really a joyous celebration for those involved. Wishing she could/would have participated and was given the proper sendoff.

RE: WBB transfer portal - 2006alum - 04-11-2022

To me, the problem is baseless speculation. For the most part, some folks here have insider information (and are usually proven right), and others merely speculate (and are usually proven wrong). And I'm not really sure what value there is in the latter. Presumably, we'll find out soon where Brown is headed, and if she wants to, I'm sure she'll have the opportunity to explain her decisionmaking process. Until then, wish her the best, and hope she lands someplace where she gets to have a year or two of the on-court experience we all hoped she'd get at Stanford.

So, is it okay for "some folks" with "insider information" - who are usually proven right - to speculate; however, it is verboten for anyone else to speculate based on what they observe?  Just trying to keep track of all the rules here.

And btw, do you still think the departure of Carrington was an amicable/warm fuzzy one?
Actually, Bob is probably a better person to ask, given your post above.

P.S.  Agree with Card10Fan that it is a shame that Jenna did not enjoy a proper senior send off (whatever the reason(s) for same).

RE: WBB transfer portal - 2006alum - 04-11-2022

No rules here - just a personal preference that people who know what they're talking about do the talking.

And when did I ever make a claim I knew about the circumstances behind Carrington's departure? All I know is what has been stated publicly: Tara had already promised the fifth-year scholly to Anna Wilson by the time Carrington determined she'd sit out enough to be eligible for a medical redshirt year.

For sure. At least she got a nice sendoff at the banquet.

Harbaugh definitely ghosted recruits, and I think even verbal commits. He did lots of great things, but not having the courtesy to level with recruits and say we got a verbal from a better player was not one of them.

I’m not sure if he deliberately used admissions to take the fall for pulling an offer. I think it was more that Harbaugh wrote checks admissions couldn’t cash. I recall him being pissed about the rejections, when he found out that OU was the final arbiter.

At one point there was notoriously poor coordination between admissions and recruiting, but I think the worst of it was during Mamlet’s term and predated Harbaugh.

RE: WBB transfer portal - BobK - 04-11-2022

Dean Shaw came 2 years or so before Bowlsby and Harbaugh
There was one player who got decommitted and when others fell through re offered and came to Stanford

RE: WBB transfer portal - BostonCard - 04-11-2022

From a timing perspective, not getting into her grad program makes the most sense. The fact that we only signed 3 incoming recruits suggests that Brown figured into our plans.

Of course it is always possible that there was some sort of blow-up with the coaching staff, but I’m not sure we need to invoke player strife when Okham’s razer suggests otherwise.

Brown was at the banquet. No blow up

My <TOTALLY> uninformed guess.

JB on track to graduate with a degree in Poli Sci
JB applies to PS (or related) grad programs including Stanford, which is a small dept and by inference, which has a VERY limited # of slots for Masters students
JB learns she is not accepted to Stanford, but does get in to 1+ somewhat attractive grad program(s) somewhere else
JB enters the portal

and now she's moving on....that's it

I'd say you are spot on. If someone has credible information please share it. If someone enjoys the practice of blind speculation, just keep it to things that might not damage the perception about a person, i.e. - career impacting injuries, academic deficiencies.  I definitely have goosebumps about the genuine outpouring of support about a missed senior night opportunity. It will go down as one of the great tragedies of all time. I just think those same senior night sympathizers should think twice before concluding about a college athlete's physical well being and whether or not she academically was able to continue at Stanford.  Just my take and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Totally separate note, Lexi will make it.  That kid has the stuff. This is completely unverifiable, but I told a friend of mine yesterday not to be surprised if Lexi goes way higher than projected.  I was puzzled about drafting both her an Engstler, but regardless I think Lexi is a pro.  Stepping off the soapbox and hope everyone enjoys the rest of the evening.

Engstler really impressed me.  Non-stop motor, just like Lexie.

Just wondering if a student who is graduating has to enter the portal to be eligible to play at another school.

Could Brown have graduated, gotten rejected for Stanford masters while being accepted at not-Stanford U, not declared for the portal, gone to university that accepted her, and played for that school with her year of eligibility left?

Is there a benefit to the portal at this point?

RE: WBB transfer portal - M T - 04-12-2022

In WVB a few years ago, we had a grad walk-on.  No scholarship though — maybe the portal allows for coaches to allocate scholarships for the chosen transfers.

I see Indiana WBB with a 22-8 record this past year. They were a good, top 25 team.

RE: WBB transfer portal - bl82 - 04-12-2022

The Indiana Fever WNBA team was 6-26 and 6-16 the previous year. They haven't had a winning season since 2015.
