That was a bigger win than some might realieze. Stanford had dropped out the top 25 and had a lousy RPI (due to a few fluke results for both Stanford and some of its opponents). A loss to Arizona State and then perhaps 1 or 2 losses to lesser P12 opponents and Stanford would have been in danger of being left out of the tournament altogether. Beating previously-undefeated Arizona State on the road gives this young team a little more breathing room (and bodes well for them in general).  No goal from Lumi, but nice to see Montoya get on the board again (this time with a wicked steal/strike) and also from Catherine Paulson, who has come back strong after her long injury.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer - M T - 10-07-2022

They won last night 2-1.

I turned on the TV today just before noon today (Friday) and it was on Fox (Channel 2).  Fox is carrying a friendly against England in England (sold out Wembly stadium), starting now.
Immediately they highlighted two players to watch today: Naomi Girma and Sophia Smith.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer - 81alum - 10-07-2022

I enjoyed watching us take down Washington last night.  That second goal was an exercise in beautiful coordination, Williams to Enge coming down the right side, who then crossed it in front of the goal with such perfection that Montoya could hit the goal in perfect stride.

Women's soccer seems to be a game where freshmen can make immediate contributions.  Kostmayer, another other freshman forward, seems to be pretty darn good too ;)

Here are the two goals by Montoya…

And some nifty goaltending…

Great 2-1 win vs Washington State today, including a brilliant free kick by Jasmine Aikey that found the upper corner of the net and a spectacular game-winning goal from Samantha Williams.

Also, in case you missed it, Andrea Kitahata announced in an Instagram post yesterday that she has made the difficult (and intelligent) decision to sit out the rest of the season to focus on her mental health and process grief from her friend and teammate Katie Meyer's death by suicide: Kitahata Instagram Post

Her health and healing should come first.

It is a shame when these young women are feeling that playing hinders the healing process.  I always found playing as a way to step away from the other pressures in life.

Every situation is unique but seems like when your teammate dies by suicide it wouldn't be surprising that playing and practicing is triggering/causes some kind of ptsd. She's also in a different situation than her teammates as she was with the national team when KM died and didn't get the same opportunities to grieve with her teammates.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer - BostonCard - 10-09-2022

I think the pressures are also different now.

Exactly.  Also, Katie parents have repeatedly referred to a school disciplinary action following Katie's "defense of a teammate" in some sort of campus incident. I have no idea which teammate or what incident, but the suggestion that the death of a teammate could have been triggered by an incident involving another teammate might make it even more difficult to process one's grief by jumping right back into the team environment.  I can only imagine how difficult it must be for other teammates who knew and loved Katie to continue as "normal" as well.  I hope they are all getting the support they need.  Stanford has a lot more mental health resources than they used to (and every student ID now has a number on the back that students can call).  But, as Andrea suggests in her post, there needs to be a strong culture among coaches, professors, deans/administrators, etc. that accommodates treatment for mental health issues the same as more overt injuries/illnesses.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer - ca245 - 10-10-2022

May be behind a pay wall, but this The Athletic article nominally on the USWNT-England game is really a Stanford soccer article (even though I don't think "Stanford" gets mentioned even once) because the three featured players are Sophia Smith, Naomi Girma and Alyssa Thompson. And Alana Cook and Andi Sullivan also started.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer - Spiny_Norman - 10-17-2022

The NCAA women's soccer tournament committee released a mid-season top 10 last week BEFORE Stanford had knocked off UCLA. Stanford was not in that top 10, nor were they one of the schools listed as Under Consideration.

Stanford desperately needed that victory. Maybe it was helped by the spirit of Katie Meyer.

Big weekend trip to the Oregons this weekend. Stanford has dropped two straight to Oregon State. Oregon beat Stanford as recently as 2020. The team can't afford losses or even ties against the final 5 opponents (Oregons, Utah, Colorado and Cal). 4 of those 5 are in the bottom half of the conference.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer - oldalum - 10-20-2022

Nice story in the Chron about GK Ryan Campbell and the challenges of replacing Katie Meyer.  article

Also, when the NWSL playoffs began, 10 Stanford players were participating, including some names I haven't seen in a while:
Camille Levin, Lo'eau LaBonta, Tegan McGrady, Sam Hiatt; plus Belle Briede and the usual US National Team players Jane, Alana, Sophia, Naomi and Tierna.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer - 81alum - 10-21-2022

No one has mentioned yet that we defeated Oregon (at Oregon) 1-0 last night, and will move on to Oregon State at noon on Sunday.

I found it something of a frustrating win to watch--one of those things about soccer-- in that we completely dominated Oregon, getting off 32 shots to their 3 shots, but only managed to get 1/32 into the nets.  Furthermore, this happened on our very first shot, by Kostmayer at the 6 minute mark, meaning that for the next 84 minutes we were kicking into a brick wall.  If there were a time-of-possession stat we probably would have dominated 5:1.  Our shooting accuracy was not great, with 9/32 shots on goal, but a couple of those 9 were very close--one bouncing off the bar, another forcing a really really good save.  Fortunately, unlike UCLA, we never turtled but kept going for the 2nd goal.  Regardless, it is another win, and yet more evidence that Kostmayer is special.

It could have been worse: yesterday WSU outshot ASU 32-8 and lost 0-2!

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer - DenverCard - 10-21-2022

You'd never convince the vast majority of soccer fans, but I've long thought that the size of the goal should be increased.  Strictly on a probabilistic basis, it would increase the percentage of offensive possessions that result in goals.  It would also require defenses to come out farther to prevent longer shots, thereby increasing space near the goal, analogous to how the 3-point shot in basketball decreases congestion in the lane. And it would no longer make a two-goal lead almost insurmountable.  With a larger goal, it would be much more likely that "turtling" like Stanford did for 20-30 minutes against UCLA would be punished, as the best "defense" would be ball possession and more goals.

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer - PVTree - 10-21-2022

I once played in an indoor soccer league that had a different scoring system: 3 points for a goal and 1 point for a corner kick.

Gotta give Oregon credit.  They were not giving us easy shots (the shots-on-goal differential was only 9-2).  Oregon seems to have flipped a switch on defense lately. Including last night, they have allowed only 2 goals in their past 4 conference games (same as Stanford).

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer - 81alum - 10-23-2022

I was not able to watch the game, but just got back to peruse the states.  Stanford beats Oregon State 3-0, and there are some shocking stats, so I hope someone who watched can fill us in.

Jasmine Aikey got a hat trick, scoring all 3 goals.  Zounds.

We outshot Oregon State 29-3.
Unlike at Oregon, 18 out of 29 of our shots were on goal.
Oregon State did not have a single shot on goal.

So, from the stat sheet, it looks like OSU was grossly overmatched.  And an amazing game for Aikey.

Now, looking forward to an eyewitness report....

RE: Stanford Women’s Soccer - oldalum - 10-23-2022

no eyewitness but you can see 2 goals on the W Soccer Twitter account. The third was on a free kick that she put into the goal (the second one of those she's made this year) but I haven't seen any video of it.
