Baez87 - Baez87 - 02-03-2023

Great win buzzer to buzzer! What a night — Marty doing his Bill Stern live-from-courtside thing, the defense's collective shutdown, the bench coming in to play seriously good ball, and a lead that just kept growing. The team needed a blowout. Tonight, I liked the court confidence shown by our newbies — including Green and Papadaki, Betts's improvement offensively and defensively, Elena's fearless moves, Haley's court awareness and shooting touch, and Nivar's mature play.
And I agree with others on this thread, that Marty ought to be our on-the-road game correspondent for future games. Keep that hat dusted off and ready for the road, Marty!

Agree re Betts. Great game. Pass to Belibi under the net was spectacular.

RE: WBB: Stanford 71 -- WSU 38 - martyup - 02-04-2023

So I'm walking out of the stadium and I run into Cam's mom and dad.  As we walked together to the parking lot we talked about how fun it is for them to follow her basketball career.  They said that Cam has been fighting a cold and wasn't feeling well tonight.  I noticed in warm up that she seemed a little lower energy than usual.

We talked about how everyone on the team seemed to like each other and how happy they seemed.  Interestingly, they said that the team is just now starting to really come together.  They said that there has been some struggles earlier in the season with team cohesion.  That was news to me, but explains some of the off games we've seen.

I told them that they should play with Cam in the Family Division at the Spokane 3-on-3 Hoopfest.  They said that both of them have really bad knees and can't play anymore.  They seemed like really nice people.

Here's my travel story . . .

WSU is situated in the Palouse and has the reputation of being "in the sticks."

I'm coming from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and driving to Pullman.  I plug-in the WSU coliseum in Google maps on my phone and it gives me the route.  It's a little under 2 hours drive.  Apparently the fastest route to the basketball arena avoids going through downtown Pullman.  I'm not sure how much time it saves since Pullman isn't exactly a grand metropolis.

About 90 minutes into the drive, Google tells me to make a right turn.  I dutifully follow the instructions and a couple of miles later find myself on a dirt road.  For about 10 miles I drive on a dusty pot-holed gravel road!  Then I turn left onto Highway 27 and proceed to Pullman.

So, yes, WSU is in the sticks.

And ashten gets 1 minute and out. That's tough

Looks like Tara has decided to give Ashten's minutes to Betts for experience. I would bet we will see Ashten in tournament play when three pointers are needed, or when playing two effective big bigs. I think this was Betts' best game so far. The improvement is easy tot see.

RE: WBB: Stanford 71 -- WSU 38 - martyup - 02-04-2023

Haley was 1 rebound short of a double-double.

RE: WBB: Stanford 71 -- WSU 38 - 81alum - 02-04-2023

What a nice feel-good win.  It is good to have some of these in Pac-12 play, but other than the ASU game they have been few and far between--probably a mark of the improved depth of the conference and our offensive struggles.

WSU is a good team, though, and so a 33 point defensive beat-down, on the road, is impressive.  Interesting to know that Cam was under the weather.  Like many here, I was most impressed with Betts.  This was not statistically her best game (CSUN, 18 pts) or her most minutes (Grambling, 17 minutes) but WSU was far more serious competition, and she went 5/6 with a block and a steal.  Her conditioning is obviously improving, as her speed up and down the court is much better.  She seemed to be more comfortable on defense.  She is beginning to look a lot more like a #1 recruit.

This was the most minutes Nivar has played since Lepolo was injured, and in this game she played more (20) than Lepolo (19).  Lepolo had 1 assist and 1 turnover along with 2 steals and 2 points, Nivar had 5 assists and 2 turnovers along with 5 points and 2 steals.  It looks to me that Nivar is finally catching up to the role and coming into her own.  It is a bit deceptive though, since my impression is that Jones brought the ball up court and distributed it more than either Lepolo or Nivar, each of whom played the 2 on those occasions when Jones was at the 1.  Jones had 4 assists to 2 turnovers.

Also like some of you, I am impressed with Bosgana.  I singled out her defense for praise much earlier in the year, but going 3/3 in 9 minutes, including 2 treys and a wonderful curl around the paint for a layup, was quite impressive offense.  I hope she can bottle that performance and pour it out in future games when we really need it.

Demetre seems to be getting more and more minutes, while the experiment with Emma-Nnopu seems to be fading somewhat.  At 25 minutes this was the most she has played this year.  It was far from her best offensive performance, but you could see that WSU came out to defend her at the line the way they do Jump, so her three point threat is taken seriously.

Jones was a bit of an enigma to me.  She scored 13 points with a killer shot from the midrange in the first half, but then did not score another point.  Of course, she didn't need to--the rest of the team was expanding the lead.  She is the definition of a utility player--doing whatever is required at any particular moment.

But let's talk about defense.  This is Stanford's identity at this point, and holding a serious power 5 team to 38 points was quite an accomplishment.  CLW had 8 points on 3/13 shooting, and 1/5 from three point range.  Murakatete was 2/4 for 7 points.  WSU shot 25%, had 17 turnovers, got blocked 5 times, and only managed 7 assists for the game.  We have been putting larger players like Demetre, Jones, and Brink out on the perimeter, and this really disrupts the three point shooting of other teams.  Normally this would be attacked by drives to the basket, but our defense has been sufficiently deep to prevent that.

37 bench points--after many many games when the bench seemed to recede, this was especially welcome.

Plus 1 for Marty. Thanks for the comentary.
However you need better GPS lol
89 minutes for the bench. Yet the team shot 50%. Love it
Also Washington beat cal. And Arizona came from down about 11 to beat ucla.

RE: WBB: Stanford 71 -- WSU 38 - jonnyss - 02-04-2023

i'm guessing that tara will keep rotating which back up to cam gets high minutes, and ashten will get her turn again soon.

RE: WBB: Stanford 71 -- WSU 38 - martyup - 02-04-2023

During warm up, after the Stanford team left the court to go back to the locker room, CLW came down to my end of the court and practiced her three point shooting.  She had two people assisting her so she could keep shooting without much delay between shots.  She was absolutely nailing her shots.

The fact that we held her to 8 points (3-13, 1-5) is testament to the quality of our defense.

That second foul on Cameron was BS.  Teder is a flopper.
I thought the first foul on Brink was BS--the WSU player just ran into her, and Brink did not move until the crash.  The second foul it seemed to me that Brink was moving.

Correct 81. First moving screen was total nonsense as you described and the second was deserved. The third I didn't see and there was no replay. What is infuriating is that there were at least a dozen moving screens worse than what Brink did that the refs did not call including a few by our players.

Although W-L records don't indicate it, I think OSU is better than WSU yet WSU is projected to make the tourney and OSU not. I watched OSU versus Utah and OSu played a heckuva game taking Utah to OT. Another close loss for them, two to the two best in the P12. Mostly though, OSU has better talent and is deeper. Don't know why they have struggled to win, just seems like theu haven't developed chemistry or perhaps young players who need to learn.

Agree in our win that it was great to see our bench perform so well. I like that Nivar got minutes and starting to look like she belongs as a solid back up to Lepolo. We need that. And yes, Betts played well. The only thing I don't like when Betts is on the floor is that our players, especially when other bench players are on the floor with her, default to her too much on O as if she is a safety blanket. The other players become too stagnant. They look to throw it into Lauren which is good - to an extent. Many times, Lauren is double-teamed or not in a good position to get the pass. It leads to turnovers or Betts being swarmed. Still good to go to Betts, but not quite so often or so obviously.

Jump is pressing. Would like to see her relax some and get back to hitting threes at 40-50% clip.

I thought the refs in our game were bad, but watched UA take down Ucla and the refs in that game were also horrible. As one example (can't recall the players), but one player is driving to the basket and a defender clearly hacks the player driving across the arm causing the player to lose the ball and it goes out of bounds. The defending team is awarded the ball as is the offensive player just lost control of the ball. The hack was so obvious and blatant that I have no idea how the refs could blow that call. P12 needs to clean up its officiating. Way too much banging, pushing, other physical play/fouls and even if the refs want to let them play, the calls need to b much more consistent so players know what they can and can't do. In a way, I'm glad that they are allowing more physical play because watching teams around the country we can expect to see that in the tourney and need to be prepared. But it does make for some ugly games, but worse to repeat myself, the inconsistent officiating affects the games and can be maddening.

Yep, that was me.  Ball was heading right for the Pac-12 camera assistant.  I don't think she saw it coming.

Another interesting thing I noticed was that the baseline ref, Kyle Bacon, was constantly yelling at the post players.  He would shout, "Easy, Easy" or "Don't Push" or other words I couldn't decipher.  It was almost like he was coaching them.  Is that normal?

The level of pushing and shoving under the basket is way more than TV reveals.  It's no wonder that Betts has taken time to adjust to D1 level play.

I think the ref talking to the players is a way to communicate what they will call and what they will let go without blowing a whistle every 10 seconds.  That was a nice seat you had!  I know it isn't close to you, but you really should go to the Washington game on Sunday!  Thanks for the updates.

Reffing high school and adult leagues would normally warn post players about pushing, etc

Google has a nasty habit of trying to route you near their big advertisers. It’s also possible that they’re routing you away from Pullman where nobody advertises with them. I have an example from many years ago. Apologies. This is not mobile friendly.

I post complete games on Youtube. The only time I ever got a copyright takedown request was for music in a commercial.

Is there a video of the complete game?  I'd love to see what I missed on the other end of the court.

Weirdly, I got a takedown request for a complete game I posted where the audio capture didn't work. It cited a specific segment of a few minutes that was as silent as the rest.

Maybe the claimant owns right to a performance of John Cage's work 4'33.
