RE: WBB: Stanford vs Sacred Heart/Southern Friday 4:30 - WBB fan - 03-15-2023

Sacred Heart started slow, then woke up in mid 1st qtr when down 10 at 4-14. After that, started hitting shots, much more aggressive generally, esp on boards, driving to basket, hitting 3. At half, Sacred Heart up 33-20. Led by a speedy and very aggressive 5' 3" guard who drives well, but not good at passing out. She's their leading scorer this season at 18 pts/ game. Some members of Stanford team here in addition to all the coaches. Saw Fran, Betts, Agnes.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Sacred Heart/Southern Friday 4:30 - 76lsjumb - 03-15-2023

With 1 minute left to play, the teams are shooting 27% from 3-pt range… combined!
As in, 13% for one and 14% for the other…

If we don’t win every quarter, and 2 of them by at least 10 points, it will be cause for concern.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Sacred Heart/Southern Friday 4:30 - WBB fan - 03-15-2023

Stanford coaches were here to the end, to see Sacred Heart win. Card should be well prepared. And yes, we should win easily. And if not, yes a real cause for concern.

I see Katie S and Eileen here in the stands. Sacred Heart band played the anthem, the BEST rendition I've heard all season. No kidding, clean pace, no messing with tune, no trills, just very well done. Like Stanford, Southern team left the court for the anthem.

Still having same problems with Maples scoreboards as at UCLA game. Good grief. They've had several weeks to take care of this  Hope it's fixed by Friday.
Tara and Kate Paye have now joined Katie S don't see Anderson, but she might be there as well .

Happy to hear that about the band. Sitting at home I was wondering if they borrowed the LSJUMB 'cos I kept hearing some of the same songs.

Was also wondering about the scoreboards. Wow. Inexcusable to not have this resolved.

I have redone the original preview to account for more in-depth information about Sacred Heart, now that we know they are our opponent.

We counted less than 100 folks who were clearly not employees or players or people associated with the teams. Second half was even less well attended. pitiful.

The box score indicates attendance was 314.

Attendance at Sacred Heart's 1sr two games of their conf. tourney were 155 and 172.  Those games were at their home court, not clear across the country.  (I grant that I didn't check the weather -- they could have been snowed in for all I know.)

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Sacred Heart Friday 4:30 - WBB fan - 03-16-2023

There's a wonderful article in "The Next" about Sacred Heart and Southern being in the tournament and about last nighjt's game -- about how much being in the game meant to the two teams. For Sacred Heart, it was the 1st NCAA post-season win in any sport. Both teams were so proud and happy to be there. I wish that more fans had recognized this and been there to support them. [And I wish I could share the article, but it's behind a paywall]

Re Sacred Heart in particular, that speedy 5' 3" point guard I mentioned, the article goes on at length about her, including the fact that she's a freshman and was not only freshman of the year in their conference (the NEC, i.e., Northeast Conference), but was also defensive POY and conference POY. Her stat line last night was 11 points, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds, a near triple-double. I'm pretty sure that Tara et al. are working on a plan to deal with her on Friday.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Sacred Heart Friday 4:30 - 76lsjumb - 03-16-2023

Spoiler alert/warning for those who are cheesed off by opposing bands behaving badly: after missed free throws by the other team, the Sacred Heart band yells - with surprisingly good volume and enunciation, I have to admit - “YOU JUST LET YOUR WHOLE TEAM DOWN!” And, in the event of a second miss, it’s “YOU JUST LET YOUR WHOLE TEAM DOWN [pause] AGAIN!”  It was quite noticeable last night, given that their band constituted roughly 20% of the entire building occupancy. Probably not the case tomorrow…

Seems a tiny bit uncharitable for a school named Sacred Heart… of course, I’m expecting to hear the venerable LSJUMB 2x plus 4 cheer many times - and, if all goes as it should, maybe even a 3x cheer as well - as the game progresses.

Maybe they can post her up and get her in foul trouble.

Did I read correctly that their tallest player is 6-1?  Betts could have a Wilt Chamberlain night.

I was at the other end from the Sacred Heart Band, behind the Southern Bench in section 4, so didn't hear this. But I certainly could hear the Southern band, all brass, cymbals, and a very loud drum. It was the loudest band I've ever heard in Maples, so loud that I had to plug my ears while they played, and it still hurt. And a couple of times, they didn't quite finish playing before action on the court started. After the game, I encountered one of the few other Stanford fans at the game, and we both commented on the Southern band. She said they changed their seats to get farther away from it because it was so painfully loud. That band was enough to make me root for Sacred Heart so I wouldn't have to endure it again on Friday. But now, maybe I'm not so happy with having the Sacred Heart band be there. Contrast that "you let your team down" jeer with how the teammates handle it so often, a pat on the back and encouragement to get the next one after a miss at the free throw line.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Sacred Heart Friday 4:30 - 76lsjumb - 03-16-2023

I was- literally - the only guy sitting in upper section 14 (general admission last night, but my season ticket seat for MBB, so I was done sitting there last night), so I was on the other end from the Southern Band. Nevertheless, I can confirm that they were LOUD!! Almost as bad where I was sitting as the canned music they play relentlessly over the PA system …

A plan to stop her? Two words: Cam Brink. If she plays smart and stays out of foul trouble, she could have a single game record high number of blocks.

I’m worried that we will have a record high number of turnovers, though.

They have a 6'2" player, and a 6'1" player, both will play but neither has started very much this year.

I think high-low passes to Brink and Betts could net 100 points.  We don't want to tire them out, though, since we will need them on Sunday.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Sacred Heart Friday 4:30 - WBB fan - 03-16-2023

I saw a lot of Sacred Heart baskets last night that I thought Cam would have blocked or at least prevented. Most of their points were in the paint or near and Stanford def should be able to deal with them there. As for size, they do have a 6'2" player but she's not a starter. She played 16 minutes last night. Tallest starters are two at 6'0" -- in short, they are at a major size disadvantage. Yes, they did force Southern into a lot of turnovers last night, but quite a few were simply clumsy play on Southern's part. If we pay attention and don't make silly passes, we should be able to limit the turnovers.

The main player to watch, whom we really need to pay attention to, is Pryor, the 5'3" point guard. She could play in any power-5 conference and do well -- very aggressive. Not only is she their leading scorer at 18 pts/game, she's also their leading rebounder, steals, and assists person. Has a 1.55 assist/turnover ratio. A measure of her aggressiveness, she gets to the free throw line a lot, averaged nearly 6 free throw attempts per game. But she's not a great free throw shooter, 67.5%.  For the team as a whole, not great at 3s, 27.5% for season, averaging 5.3/game. (Last night they had only 3). They do create turnovers, in large part due to Pryor's aggressiveness, averaging almost 10 steals per game.

That is possible, and if I were the Sacred Heart coach I'd do my best to press constantly--why not?  But I did not get the impression that the Sacred Heart guards--other than Pryor--were unusually quick.  We have played against better in nearly every Pac 12 game.  Sacred Heart is not up to Creighton or Florida Gulf Coast or any number of any other opponents with speedy little guards we have flattened this year.  Pryor will probably give Lepolo a good workout, though--will be interesting to see whether our freshman can keep up with their freshman.

Some not good news. The SF Chronicle reporter at practice says that Brink is sitting on the sideslines, Haley was late, and the team has been dealing with a stomach bug and has missed some classes.

Can we get Folkl and Nygaard back here by tomorrow? Their knees should be healed by now…

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Sacred Heart Friday 4:30 - stopandpop - 03-16-2023

A concern of mine; We get off to a great start and build a substantial lead.  Tara pulls Brink (as she usually does) very early and later pulls Haley and neither of them comes back.  The reserves come in and we go from playing great, intense basketball to mediocre basketball and while we easily win the game, we lose the 4th. quarter.

We have seen this pattern all too often this season.  We play intense for one half and then (inexplicably), take our foot off the accelerator and the efficiency of our offense declines when Brink and Haley are not on the court.  Obviously, our reserves can't match the skill sets of our 2 All-Americans, but the intensity should never drop off.

Will we have learned our lessons from the UCLA loss and all the big leads we've given up?  We'll find out beginning Friday, and most certainly on Sunday.
