RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - Jskass - 11-08-2024

One thing to remember is that the guards that are gelling have experience on our team (think Bosgana, Harriel, Clardy for example). Our forwards -- we have two who have played previously at Stanford (Agara and Demetre), with admittedly limited experience given the personnel previously ahead of them. It will take a while for not only them to gel but for Stevenson and Umeh to learn/develop/get into Stanford running shape to contribute. So it could be this is all positive but the true impact for the bigs is next season.

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - BosCard - 11-08-2024

It was interesting to see how much time Ogden spent playing the 4 last night.  I think the smaller lineups could struggle defensively against some teams but it sure is fun to watch on offense.  Of the 9 players who played double digit minutes, 8 of them hit a 3 (Stevenson was the only one who didn’t).  Also 4 double digit scorers.   Feels quite different from last year when it was the Cam and Kiki show almost exclusively.

While Ogden was not one of the scoring leaders, I think she was playing with more confidence.  There were one or two time she put it on the floor and took it to the basket successfully.  She still seems to hesitate to shoot when she is open at times.  Perhaps she is being a little too unselfish.  I remain hopeful that she will continue to improve and become a star one day, but the learning curve has been steeper perhaps than we expected.  There is a lot of talent there.

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - WBB fan - 11-08-2024

The range of players hitting 3s is so impressive, and it's going to be a game changer for us if it can continue. Last year, our opponents knew that guarding the 3 was simply a matter of guarding Hannah. They could focus on her and still have defensive power to put against Cam and Kiki. This year, a lot of the time, all five Stanford players on the floor will be serious 3-point threats. Opponents can't safely lay off anyone on the perimeter. Will be fascinating to see how this plays out.

I'm will all who say they like what they've seen in the 1st two games. This team has real promise, and with the relatively newness of it as a group and players, it will be one of those teams that has the potential to just get better and better as the season goes on.

Thinking back to Kate's pre-season comments re different people being leading scorer every night, that's what we're seeing right now. Including the exhibition game, three games, three leading scorers.  Only Nunu has been in double digits in all three games. I think she's going to be the glue of the team -- and not only strong inside, but she's also one of the three point shoots. Wow.

Stanford has shot over 70% for two games in a row. Since the 2009-10 season (as far back as Herhoopstats goes), Stanford has shot over 70% on 3s only 3 times.

2011 vs AZ State (4 of 5, 80%)
2012 vs South Carolina (1 of 1, 100%) [NCAA Tournament]
2013 vs UCLA (6 of 7, 85.7%)

We've now done it twice in two games (with a minimum 14 3pts made). So we have indeed never seen this (at least in the last 15 years anyway). Even more impressive is that 26 of the 32 made threes were by players who were on the roster last season (4 were made by transfer Tess Heal and 2 by frosh Harper Peterson).

Stanford did make 15 threes on 53.7% shooting vs Gonzaga in 2022.  Only 2 were by players currently on the roster though. Harriel and Lepolo each made 1.

(11-07-2024, 10:27 PM)81alum Wrote:  The players seemed to be playing with joy, and there were many fewer mistakes than I remember on last year's talented team. A total of 9 turnovers in the entire game--it just looked like clean play.
We averaged 13.4 turnovers last season and 15.3 the season before that. We started the 2021 season with 21 turnovers vs Morgan St. Easier to avoid turnovers when you aren't trying to force it into your bigs on most plays.

I assume someone who knows more than I do about Gonzaga will start a Gonzaga game thread, but in the meantime, does anyone know when the Tara court naming ceremony will be -- before the game, at halftime, or after the game???

I nominate 81alum to start the game threads for WBB.  He does a great job previewing the games and summarizing post-game.  It is certainly his job if he wants it.

Totally agree. I second the nomination!

I too am very impressed with this team outta the gate.
Way overplaying my expectations, and my expectations were not low.
Of course all this based on only the few games (incl exhibition) so far.
But so far, we are not a particularly tall team, but apparently tall enough to rebound well.
Agara has really stepped up in that regard and made big improvements on both ends of court that remind me of Kiki's big leap in improvement last year..
Bosgana always had flashes of brilliance but you sometimes had to wade through long periods of drought to see it come up again.
Now she's bringing it regularly (of course more playing time giving her more opportunities).
Both Clardy and Ogden seem notably improved.
The new players are contributing and I have a feeling Heal really only getting started on her contributions with more to come.
As others have said, the next test of Gonzaga will be a yet further determination of how good this team is.
But so far it is full steam ahead and Captain Paye has been steering a great course.

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - crackpot - 11-08-2024

On the long drive home last night, I just kept thinking about how, SO MANY TIMES, in this game my mind would go from uh oh to WOW in a split second.

This team is gritty, creative, and never gives up. It's going to be a fun season.

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - BosCard - 11-08-2024

I think there’s a chance Bosgana becomes our leading scorer this season.  I wasn’t as enthusiastic coming into the season given you tend not to see brobdingnagian jumps in production from Jr to Sr year.   However what is very very different this year is the spacing.   Bosgana needs space to drive for fouls or layups.   And the past few years we’ve had a lot of posts clogging the lane and drawing lots of defenders.  Perhaps this year and this system we will see how effective/productive she can be

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - M T - 11-08-2024

If you're going to attend, apparently Stanford is worried someone wili hijack Maples and fly it to Cuba.  Metal detectors are in place.  Pocket knives are not allowed.  Stanford apparently doesn't post what is and isn't allowed, like the TSA does.  Don't you just love this illogic from Stanford (2018)
Quote:The process looks similar to airport screening, but our equipment is specifically calibrated to detect metal objects. Fans will not be asked to remove their belts, shoes or jackets before passing through the metal detector.
The people operating them apparently are more concerned with what you put in the bowl rather than bothering to notice if you trigger the metal detector.  An older lady went through in front of me and the lights triggered, but the attendant wasn't looking.

Stanford vs WSU:  Same song, 75th verse.

I did have a thought at the begining of the 2nd half that Stanford could still lose the game.

From the stands, it seemed like the team relaxed in the 2nd half and started playing looser & more productively.  The assists shot up too.  (1st half, only 4 on 31 FGA;  second half, 12 on 34 FGA)

Of course Kate was going to bring in the rest of the players at the end, but with about 2:30 to go, I could see a possibility of 100 points again.  Certainly, WSU got a bunch of points right at the end.

Encouragingly, all our quarters have had good shooting, so far..  FG% (3FG%) by quarter
Le Moyne  31.3 (45.5);  62.5 (70.0);  68.8 (40.0);  57.9 (50.0)
WSU       47.1 (75.0);  50.0 (75.0);  50.0 (85.7);  62.5 (40.0)

Sorry to bust your story, but against Le Moyne, Stanford shot 55.2% FG% and 52.9% 3FG%.

I thought it telling that one of the officials didn't know where a throw-in should be taken and had to be instructed where to position the player. Sigh...

Tthe OR% was 14/(14+21) = 40%.  That's really good.  But at least 2 of those were on FT rebounds.
DR% was 23/(23+8) = 74.2%.  Ok.
Add them together for a simple (but questionable) number, 114.2  - a very good number.

I was impressed with the quickness of WSU's #5 Chiu.  I thought she'd give us more trouble, but we did ok.

The claimed attendance of 2428 seems much higher than people in seats.

I wonder if the fact that Brooke was on the court more in the second half was a factor - she sat out much of the first half with foul trouble.

I've posted my report at www.stanfordfbc.org. As usual, I posted it so recently that the teaser doesn't reflect it, but it you click on Richter Reports, you'll see it.

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - 81alum - 11-09-2024

The presser:

https://gostanford.com/news/2024/11/7/stanford-womens-basketball-wsu-press-conference

Main takeaway:  Kate wants us to be tough, scrappy, physical, aggressive on defense, and contrasted this with the past.  In the past we relied on being big and blocking shots, we can no longer count on that, so our defense needs to improve in other ways--chiefly through guard play.  From the chalk talk it sounds like our offense will still be a Princeton continuity offense, but our defensive character may show the biggest change from previous teams.   The question was provoked by our 10 steals against WSU.

Not sure how I missed that before--we won't lose many games in which we get 10 steals.  If you think about it, there is not really a better defense than a steal.  Some blocked shots do not change possession, but a steal always does.

Let's hope we see that against Gonzaga!

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - M T - 11-09-2024

Gag... Watching the game on ACCNx after being there live.  Does the ACCNx have no budget for announcers?
We had good, or even great, announcers on PAC-12 WBB and WVB.  Now, we have the dregs.

At least for WBB, they have a camera crew, instead of being dependent on the Stanford in-stadium scoreboard feed.

We surely played poorly the first 5 minutes.  Was that 4 blocks against us?  Before I muted the announcers, I heard them say we hit 1 of the last 7 shots.

Agara moves laterally well, but she's got a long way to go to be a good defender.  On both ends of the court, she will get caught being a spectator.

Lepolo's defense is not back yet.

With so many guards, why can't we put pressure and slow down the opponent when they bring the ball in full court with 12 seconds left?  Instead we give them a free pass to get it into the front court after about 4 seconds.

Worst call of the game was when Agara was called for being pushed to the floor by the tall girl pushing her down.  Tiffany Bird called it.

GoStanford's new box scores don't list the officials.  They were Tiffany Bird, Michol Murray (I remember commenting about her last year), and apparent new ref Nicole Leon.

In the Le Moyne game, it was Angelica Suffren, Timothy Resch, Trevor Inouye.

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - ca245 - 11-09-2024

For all the bashing of PAC-12 networks, I liked it, especially where you had both the PAC-12 Net and the PAC-12 Bay Area. It meant you had a second channel for live broadcast and DVRing. With ACCN and ACCNX, you only have one. With ACCNX it’s only live streaming and replays.

Oh, geez, yeah. I was thinking Tiffany was confusing Agara for Cam.

I hate the new box score layout. I hate the whole new site, SO much stuff is missing or hard to read!

Nobody hated on the Pac-12 network more than me. My main gripe was their failure to sign a streaming deal. ACC network is worse. Only positive is the games are on ESPN which now offers streaming. (Had the Pac-12 continued they might well have a streaming deal by now.)  The announcers are highly variable. Camera work is uneven. And the music played with that ridiculous ACCNX filler makes my teeth itch.
