Yeah, I should have included the bolded comment in my original post.  Re: Sasaki, I think every team in Major League Baseball would be excited to have him on their roster.

Would you take Pete Alonso in a short-term deal with opt-outs? Alonso's market appears to be shrinking as the Mets back away. Is he ready for a Chapman-style one year with options deal? He turned down a $21.05 mms. qualifying offer, so the Giants would have to give up draft picks.

San Francisco Giants Have Golden Opportunity To Land All-Star Free Agent Slugger

According to Statcast, 208 of Alonso's 226 HRs would have been home runs at Oracle.

And Santander joined the Blue Jays for a comparative pittance, $92 mms./5 years.

I’d rather sign him for 4 years with an opt out after 2.

Nope.  SF has already given up a couple draft picks for Adames.  Giving up another two for a guy who is basically nothing more than an expensive placeholder for Eldridge makes no sense. I’d perfect holding the draft picks and keeping the cash (and staying well below the CBT limit with an eye towards making some moves at the mid-season trade deadline).

Sounds good to me. How do you think Wade will do until Eldridge is ready? I'm assuming that Flores won't return to the pre-2024 form, given that he's 34 and coming off of knee surgery. Maybe they should sign Brandon Belt...

In 2023, Belt's line was .254/.369/.490/.858 with a 135 OPS+. Couldn't get a contract. He'd be 36 this year.

I think the Wade/Flores platoon will be adequate (statistically at or near the NL average) until either Eldridge is ready or the trade deadline arrives and SF acquires a 1B rental* who can finish the year.

Yes, this is putting a lot of pressure on their farm system to produce but the Giants have little choice given their lack of success in the free agent market.

* Just for fun, let’s assume Eldridge shows he may be the long term solution at 1B but doesn’t tear up the league as a rookie, would you give up a bunch of premium young talent, including Eldridge, to acquire Vlad Guerrero Jr. at the deadline? He is a free agent at the end of the ‘25 season. Perhaps getting him in a Giants uniform before the end of the season might influence him to consider staying in SF for the next decade.

I say yes. Posey needs to take some bold risks to get the Giants off the mediocrity train. A move like this would tell the fanbase that he isn’t opposed to rolling the dice.

Have to agree. The Giants have made some decent selections in rounds 2-6 in the seven years from 2016 to 2022 (Fitzgerald, McCray, Black, Schmitt, Harrison, Whisenhunt, Birdsong, Hjelle, Winn, Bryan Reynolds (All Star for Pitt), Suarez, Duggar, Webb, Coonrod)

lex24 - lex24 - 01-21-2025

Wade/Flores may be quasi- adequate at 1B.  But the combo of 1b and DH is weak.  And if Flores doesn’t return to ‘23 (and to a lesser extent Wade) they are in big trouble at 1b.

Eldridge may be ready at some point in ‘25.  But that’s questionable.

No way I trade Eldridge and more for a couple months of Guerrero.  Especially given that as currently constructed, it’s a .500 team on a good day.

If Ramos and Fitzgerald aren’t for real…..

Alonso adds pop, excitement and presence.  Which the Giants lack.  They also have no depth.  Their bench will be weak.

They need to add a major league bat someway, somehow before the season.

So, no more Sunday night games in the Eastern time zone followed by a Monday game at home.  That’s a good thing.  Leave those to the Dodgers.

I think we can forget Alonso and Flaherty.  The focus now is on an OF (Randall Grichuk?).

Agreed on both. Grichuk sounds likely, and yet...why isn't it already done? He's comparatively cheap and the Giants have a lot of cap space, so to speak. I wonder if they're working on a deal?

I wonder about that...I still think the Giants can get him on a one to two year contract with opt outs. I think he and Boras thought he'd get picked up by the Mets and Stearns and Cohen seem determined not to let that happen, or at least only on their own terms:

In his last 15 games, 11 were scoreless outings.  2.57 ERA.  Giants went 1-14. He threw 172 pitches in Sept.  Got 6 swing and misses.  As much as anything, those two stats explain why he’s gone. He’s no longer a high leverage reliever and $12 MM is too much to pay for the 12-13th member of the staff. As supported by the fact they gad to eat half his salary.

Giants only have one left-handed reliever on the 40,man roster - Erik Miller.  I’m sure Luchessi will challenge for a spot as will, perhaps, Raymond Burgos, who they picked up from the Mexican league last year. But they are wafer thin when it comes to left-handed relievers.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 02-01-2025

I really hope Buster was deking the entire baseball world when he stated that we were done with the lineup that we have. We missed the wild card spot by nine games which is a big number. Also missing the playoffs, but in front of us were the DBacks (89 wins), the Cubs and Cardinals (83 each).

I don't see the Dodgers (98 wins), Philllies (95), Brewers (93) or Padres (93) falling off much, though the Brewers may drop back a bit. The Braves, Mets and Diamondbacks all won 89.

It will take a minor miracle for the Giants to sniff the playoffs. We lost Snell (2.1), Soler (1.1), Conforto (1.3) and Ta. Rogers (1.1), but not much else. Sabol (0.3). Estrada was -0.5.

Here's what I think needs to happen -- at least 75% of this -- for the Giants to get into the playoffs:

1. Adames needs to keep form, in fact improve a bit from his 3.1 WAR...seems odd his WAR was that low with 32 HRs.
2. Chapman can't slip, needs at least 6.0 WAR (had 7.1).
3. Wade and Flores needs to return to form and get near .800 OPS (up from .761 and .595 and I sure hope it was just the knee for Wilmer).
4. Fitzgerald needs to avoid the sophomore slump and keep it up for a full year. It could happen.
5. Yaz needs a 2.5 WAR year
6. Bailey needs to extend his hitting from May through the rest of the year. Big ask, I know but he came around in September so it could happen. And a backup catcher needs to emerge.
7. Jung Hoo Lee needs to be a legitimate leadoff man, .375 OBP up from .310. With his contact skills (only 13 strikeouts in 145 ABs) he could get there. Most importantly, he needs to figure it out against the good teams. He kills it against the Nationals, Rockies, Marlins and D'Backs.
8. Oddly enough, I'm not worried about fielding. Ramos/Lee/Yaz should be fine in the OF, we have gold glovers at C, 3B and SS. When healthy, both Wade and Flores are more than competent. But we need to have a big rebound.
9. Would be nice if Encarnacion could improve, and after a MLB season if he could get to .750 OPS (from .701), that would be acceptable. Failing that, Matos or Luciano would have to improve -- a lot. Hopefully, one of them will be the Ramos of 2025.
10. I'm cautiously optimistic about the starting pitching. I realize they're overloaded with starters, and I sure hope they can find five that don't suck.
11. Webb needs some fielding support.
12. Robbie Ray needs a full return from surgery. This is his year.
13. Whatever was bothering Doval needs to be gone. Walker will be the closer, but Doval is still necessary.
14. The good pitchers can't fall back; e.g., Tyler Rogers and Hjelle.
15. The injured pitchers from last year need to step up (Hicks, Beck, Winn, etc.).
16. Hicks needs to extend. He did 109 innings, would be nice if he could get to 140.
17. The young pitchers on the cusp of greatness need to step up. Birdsong, Harrison, Roupp, Bivens, Black, etc.
18. Verlander needs to win 13.
19. We need strong seasons from three of these five: Meckler, Wisely, McCray, Villar and/or Schmitt.
20. A big minor league or free agent surprise, maybe Sam Huff who had a great 2023.

I think 15 of the 20 need to happen for the Giants to have a shot at the playoffs.

The Giants finished 17th in runs per game at 4.28, below MLB average of 4.39.
The Giants finished 16th in runs allowed per game at 4.31, just better than the 4.39 average.
The Giants finished 27th in Rtot (-46) in fielding. That's not good. They were average in errors and fielding percentage, actually finished 8th in DPs.

WAR by position. Disastrous at most positions:

3B 1st. Stay healthy, Chappy.
RF 12th. Congrats, Yaz, you get to keep your job.
1B 15th. Eldridge can't come fast enough.
RP 15th. Relief pitching was slightly better than average.
LF 17th. Ramos should improve that.
C  19th. If Bailey bats better, this should improve.
CF 21st. Lee should improve that.
DH 21st. Can Jerar do better?
SP 21st. Starting pitchers should do better this year.
SS 23rd...but Milwaukee (Adames) was only 19th. Hmmmm.
2B 28th. Hopefully Fitzpatrick changes that.

It's said you need to be strong up the middle. C, CF, SS and 2B don't look particularly strong.

Thoughts?
