Yep. My misteak, the most forgettable Big 10 college.

So that would make Pitt, with 4 appearances, the second most outside of the BigTen/(former) Pac-12

Really?  Name me another Big 10 University (or ANY other University) that is one of UNESCO’s Cities of Literature?  It has a world class writers workshop.  A great campus.  A renowned Children’s Hospital.  And one of footballs coolest traditions. From an always sold out and hopping Nile Kinnick Stadium.

I know the Iowa tradition of waving towards the Children’s Hospital (overlooking the stadium) at the end of the First Quarter is only at home games.  However, at the Music City Bowl in Nashville their fans, players and coaches all turned around to wave at the end of 1Q. As you said, one of the best traditions in the college football.

My favorite Iowa tradition is losing to Stanford by 29 in the Rose Bowl.

Given the current structure of college football, the likelihood of another Rose Bowl between Iowa and Stanford is extraordinarily infinitesimal. I guess the 2016 Rose Bowl will be always known as “The Tradition of One”.

With the Commanders' participation in the 2025 NFC Championship game, that leaves just one NFC team that hasn't played in the NFC championship game in the 21st century.

What is the only NFC football team that hasn't played in an NFC Championship game this century?

You are CORRECT Sir! America's team (as it were) is the only NFC team that hasn't played in the NFC championship game this century. In fact, they haven't played in it since the 1995 season when they played in four NFC championship games in a row, three against the Niners.

Here's the number of times each NFC team has participated in the NFC championship game this century (including 2025):

Team 21st Century NFC Champ Games
Philadelphia Eagles 8
San Francisco 49ers 7
Green Bay Packers 6
Atlanta Falcons 3
Carolina Panthers 3
Minnesota Vikings 3
New Orleans Saints 3
New York Giants 3
Seattle Seahawks 3
Arizona Cardinals 2
Chicago Bears 2
Los Angeles Rams 2
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2
Detroit Lions 1
St. Louis Rams 1
Washington Commanders 1
Dallas Cowboys 0

Same data since 1970:
San Francisco 49ers 19
Dallas Cowboys 14
Los Angeles Rams 11
Philadelphia Eagles 9
Minnesota Vikings 9
Green Bay Packers 9
Washington Commanders[fn 17] 7
New York Giants 5
Chicago Bears 5
Atlanta Falcons 4
Carolina Panthers 4
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 4
Seattle Seahawks 3
New Orleans Saints 3
Arizona Cardinals 2
Detroit Lions 2
Washington Commanders 2
Dallas Cowboys 2

Isn't this why a certain set of long-suffering NFC fans has the reputation of being so dadburned, downright, big-time ornery (bless their hearts)?  All y'all can let me know if that ain't right.

It's what precipitated the question... ;)

I have a former brother in law, Stanford grad from Plano, TX who told me, in all seriousness, that he thought it was important for America that the Dallas Cowboys be successful.

Q. How many Dallas Cowboys fans does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A. Just one. S/he holds it up, and the world revolves around them.

I'm going with one, Patrick Mahomes, since the only other ones I can recall are "old"...

Maybe Russell Wilson and the Seahawks, but I don't know when Wilson was drafted. All the other QBs were ancient, Brady, Manning, Flacco.

Indeed, an entire generation of quarterbacks within 6 draft classes are championship-less, including some really good ones, but aside from Mahomes, all the other winning SuperBowl QB’s are “ancient”.

It looks very possible that the next game in the Stanford vs. Notre Dame football rivalry (the 35th) could be played at the Rose Bowl, capacity 92,542.

The first Stanford vs. Notre Dame meeting was 1/1/1925 at the Rose Bowl. 53,000 were in attendance that day. They next played each other in the first two years of Ralston's career, 1963 and 1964, then the current rivalry started in 1989 and has played out every year since except for 1995-6 and 2020. Assuming both teams play each other in 2025, it will be their 38th meeting.

Which game in the Stanford vs. Notre Dame rivalry had the highest in-person official attendance?

I would guess 1989, the first year of the current series (with the exceptions you noted).

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Hurlburt88 - 01-27-2025

I think fall of 88 was the first installment of this "newest" series.

I will guess one of those thanksgiving saturdays @ stanford.   Maybe 2011???

That's correct. It was Denny Green's first year on the way to a 3-8 season. Notre Dame was ranked #1 in the country, Stanford was 1-3 having just lost to San Jose State (33-40) in front of 58,000 fans. That's right, the Cardinal drew 58,000 fans for a SJSU game. Stanford had a full house for the Notre Dame game in the old 86,019 seat configuration and performed credibly, tying the game 14-14 midway through the third quarter but eventually losing 17-27.

Freshman QB Steve Smith set a Pac-10 and Stanford record with 68 passing attempts and TE Jim Price set a record with 14 receptions (since eclipsed by Simi Fehoko's 16). Smith had 39 completions for 282 yards with three interceptions. Touchdown Tommy rushed 9 times for 22 yards. John Hopkins had three field goals. Stanford outgained ND in yards (316-296) and in first downs (21-16). ND had eight penalties, Stanford one.

All of this information is on the Notre Dame archives, nowhere to be found on the Stanford site. Stanford v. ND coverage on p. 24. They also include an "All-Opponent" team with Jim Price, p. 61.

Notre Dame Football Review

If I'm remembering the 1989 Notre Dame game correctly, that game was played on a very, very hot day. It was hot enough to make some people feel faint and retreat into the tunnels. That game was the one that convinced me to switch my season tickets from the sunny side to the shady side.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Leftcoast - 01-29-2025

Lots of familiar names on that Notre Dame team - Raghib "Rocket" Ismail (WR, 8 NFL seasons), Ricky Waters (later of the 49ers),  Chris Zorich (7 years in the NFL w/Chicago and others),  Todd Lyght (CB, 12 seasons in the NFL), among others.   If I remember correctly Stanford had it's own stars that reached NFL success (Lynch, Dalman, Whitfield, McCafferey, Vardell, etc).  Good match-up.

RE: Stanford alums to score in the Super Bowl.
I'd have to Google so I can only guess but must be around 10?  Maybe 4 more if you count QB passing TDs? I suspect we're closer to 'bama then many might expect. I can't think of that many Alabama players that have scored in the SB but there must be some.
