I continue to be a Talana doubter; she had one really good contribution last night, which is that she passes the ball well (quickly & accurately) from the backcourt to the front court. But she's not a great half-court point guard because she reduces the spacing on the floor and is not great with entry passes & I think she's a below average defender even when fully healthy. I would much prefer to see Clardy and Swain start together, but if Clardy gets more minutes, then it's not a big issue and will probably sort itself out over the course of the season....

I recall from a couple seasons ago, it got to a point with Lepolo that opposing teams were not even covering her when she had the ball out near the 3 point line. She had massive space. They didn't respect her shot nor her ability to drive and create a jumper or layup nor dish off a good assist. If it gets to that point again this year it ought to be a red flag that we need Clardy or someone else in there instead. I recall a similar discussion back then, where it was pointed out that Tara trusted her the most to bring the ball up the court. But if that's all a point guard gives, with no further shot threat nor assist threat, not to mention any discussion of limitations on defense, then it just isn't enough to justify being the starter IMO.

I edited a video with each of the frosh field goal contributions isolated (in most cases they are the one with the bucket, a few times just the assist).  First Somfai, then Swain, then Eschmeyer, then Amborn (for her one exquisite 3 pointer).  Sometimes more than one frosh is involved in the sequence. Fun stuff. Direct YouTube link: Stanford frosh scoring plays 11-3-25

That's really neat. Thanks. (And for all you Talana doubters, note that several of these frosh shots were after really pretty assists from Talana)

I have lingering doubts about her overall play too, but I will say TL had two really SAH-WEEET long assists in the game - one to Somfai at the 0:32 mark in OCCard's edited vid, and the other to Swain at 1:32.

and she is making most of her (few) shots this year. don't think you can leave her open at the moment.

I'm impressed with how quick and agile Somfai, Swain, and Eschmeyer are on defense and how well they mesh defensively with Clardy, Lepolo, and Agara. Granted, the two teams we played were not ACC caliber, but they both played up tempo games and we defended well.

I guess now I'd like to see how we do against a team with tall, strong post players. Hoping that Agara, Somfai, and Eschmeyer will do well in that type of game.

On Thursday, you'll see a larger team (Santa Clara) with 3 6'2 players, but no one close to Eschmeyer's 6'5 size and length.  But you'll also see a much more physical team, so I expect some banging inside.  Keep an eye out for 6'2 Sophie Glaney, a grad transfer and 2-time All BIG Sky 1st. team transfer from Northern Arizona.  She's also on the Becky Hammon Mid-Major of the year pre-season watch list for 2025-26.  Three talented guards and wings- Kylee Fox, Ashley Hawkins and Maia Jones.

For what it's worth, Santa Clara beat Stanislaus State in an exhibition 108-52.

Oh, geez, that game. It was at St. Mary's. And there were some very nasty Stanford fans in attendance; I was not used to that.

Nice to see that Disney is not prohibiting the ACC Network from posting these.

RE: WBB: Stanford 87 -- UNC Greensboro 42 - 2006alum - 11-06-2025

Excited to attend my first game this season tonight. Finally got to watch our opening game, so a few scattered thoughts ahead of that:

-Someone said we need to look for Eschmeyer inside more. I actually thought we did, and did well, early in the game, and they was a large part of why they went and stayed in a modified zone to take those passes to her away. I recall Ijiwoye having two turnovers on bad passes to Eschmeyer within minutes of each other and I think we got more skittish after that, rightly so. Unfortunately Lepolo is also not amazing at placing those kinds of entry passes because she's not a credible threat to take it to the hoop herself so her defender sags and is in position to intercept it.

-That said, Lepolo had a number of incredibly accurate and fast cross court passes to power our fast break offense and I can see why KP keeps her on the court so much despite her limitations. I have not seen Clardy have that kind of accuracy and power on her passes, and it really does fuel our offense when we have fast players like Swain and Somfai.

-I would throw MAS into the camp of noticeably improved players. She is finishing better around the rim and she seems a little faster and more court aware - she also had some great hi low passes to Eschmeyer and Somfai and I loved seeing her confidently take and make a three when her defender sagged off. Having an additional post who can swing out and play as more of a 3 gives us so much versatility in our lineups now that we have a ton of scoring threat bigs (Nunu, Somfai, Eschmeyer, MAS).

-The puzzle I have long had with Ogden is that she does both really savvy and talented things and really clumsy and bone headed things. Often on back to back plays. I am not quite sure what to make of her because at her best she has the quickness and court savvy of a guard in a forward's body and at her worst she has the clumsiness of a big being abused by savvy guards.

-Agree with everything everyone has said about our McDonald's frosh. They are incredibly poised from day one and I just hope we can retain them because they're all dynamic playmakers and with the exception of the peak Appel/Ogwumike(s)/Pohlen/Pedersen and Williams/Hull(s)/Jones/Brink eras, we have rarely had that across the 1-5 positions. I don't think we have a perfect solution at the 1 (Swain and Clardy are both more naturally combo guards), but we have the best nucleus for a dynamic set of two-way threats across our starting lineup since the Hulls and Williams graduated.

RE: WBB: Stanford 87 -- UNC Greensboro 42 - OCcardinal - 11-06-2025

UNCG lost to San Francisco 40-64 last night. So they do not seem to be a strong offensive team this season.  The Dons have some height, which it looks like UNCG might have struggled against offensively again.  Stanford's 87 points scored still looks pretty good.

One good way to keep them is ... winning.
