In a previous lifetime, I had the opportunity to interview a fairly successful men's coach about his philosophy of coaching.  He was very generous with his time and we covered a lot, but two things (he said) I'll never forget: 1) Understand the talent that you have and use that talent to your advantage to and to such an efficiency that you force your opponent to adjust.  and 2) Make the other team uncomfortable.

That coach was John Wooden.

If you look at this game from those two perspectives, Virginia coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton had her team consistently executing plays that took advantage of UVA's talent (offensively) and (defensively), they made Stanford uncomfortable.  With the exception of posting Agara and letting her work, coach Paye did not use her other Bigs- Somfai along with Eschmeyer's length, moving them away from the block and out to near the perimeter, turning them into screeners and passers, similar to the unproductive Stevenson.

Others have posted their thoughts on how Stanford could have won, but lost the game, and it's quite possible that Stanford might nab a few wins down the stretch with Nunu's presence.  She is the stud that Stanford has needed.  But I will look back on this season as Coach Paye's inability to use the talent she has with effective playmaking (rather than coming down the court and jacking up 3-point attempts, or going one on one in traffic) and (with the lack of playmaking), the inability to make Stanford opponents uncomfortable as well as the inability to adjust.

She is not the right coach for you.

I agree with most of this.  Do VA Tech, UVA, Ga Tech, etc. have more talent on the roster (everyone has injuries here and there so missing Agara hurt but can't be the only reason the season has gone off the rails.  Ga Tech was missing a leading scorer IIRC)?  This season feels worse than last season.  More talent and used to the ACC this year.  Given the way the team is losing at home to very beatable teams, "unacceptable" doesn't seem too strong to me.  I find the way this season is going to be unacceptable.  Making the NCAAs was not that high a bar.  1-7 in the past 8 games is acceptable for a team that has plenty of talent enough to make the NCAAs?  This mess is how the season finishes?  Maybe I'm off base but that seems a bit not good to me.

Charlie Crème now has Stanford out.   Losing 7 of the last 8 games is not a good team.

This right now is unacceptable. Thank you Pete that’s the right term. And please folks let’s not criticize other posters.
I don’t know why we can’t play better defense can’t play a post inside more , can’t make threes.
Yuba city has a young woman who just set the national record for threes 4.0 GPA. Of course Amborn sits and watches so no need maybe for good three shooters
Sad
Unacceptable

lauren harris of the yuba city 3s is heading to long beach state. at least so far...

another alarming aspect: 2 games in a row where several times we made a basket, then immediately got beat up the floor on a fast break from the outlet pass.
on playing the post inside more: we occasionally post-up alex; we occasionally have nunu drive to the basket. what we don't do much (and our opponents do a lot) is have a guard drive to the basket and dish to the post waiting below the basket on the weak side.

RE: WBB next two games - paloalto - 02-15-2026

To my untrained eye Stanford has some young players with possibly big upside potential.  I'd like to see how they develop under Paye's coaching in the off season for next year.

RE: WBB next two games - M T - 02-15-2026

The two box scores I see (StatBroadcast and GoStanford) show an extra 30-second timeout for UVa than allowed.  Can someone who has a recording of the game confirm whether UVa took a full timeout at Q4 0:11 and a 30-second timeout at the same clock time?   I expect it is an error in the stats.   Also, please pay attention to the timeouts that Stanford took in the last minute.  IIRC, at the end of the game, the scoreboard indicated neither Stanford nor UVA had timeouts left.  Could the 30-second timeout at 0:11 have been a Stanford timeout that was incorrectly recorded?

Both sources show timeouts for UVA at
Q1 6:37
Q4 6:10
Q4 4:53
Q4 0:11 (Full)
Q4 0:11
and Stanford at
Q4 0:32
Q4 0:09
Q4 0:05 (Full)

A reminder: For this game, each team gets 3 30-second timeouts and 1 full timeout during regulation.

Personally, I think that Stanford's raw talent might be close to or even equal to those three teams you mentioned.  But going back to Wooden's point, it's the ability (as a coach) to recognize and effectively utilize the talent on the team and that's where Coach Paye falls short.  Agree with you 100%.  Going into this season, Stanford had the talent to reach the NCAA, but there were warning signs early-on in how they were playing against out-sized and over-matched teams - like the Greensboro's, the Santa Clara's, the Cal Poly's, etc. and now you have (what you referred to) as "this mess".

I’ll try to get this Monday 2/16. Will post here if/when it’s up.

Or maybe not. Can’t find replays listed anywhere. Will take another look Monday.

RE: WBB next two games - Hieronymus - 02-15-2026

A few things have changed late in the season:
Trending up: turnovers are way down the last few games. We even were +4 today.
Trending down: the rebounding edge that was keeping us in games is disappearing, -10 in this one - and that has cancelled out the improvement in turnovers.
Trending down: the defense is good enough to keep us in games, but isn't good enough to beat better teams anymore. Early and midseason we were almost always holding teams to the 60s or lower in regulation. We didn’t win all of those, but the defense kept us in it. Now we are usually giving up 70+ and that is the cut line. 70+ in regulation for the other team has been a guaranteed loss.
Trending the same (which is really bad): the offense still has no identity and ranges from trainwreck to not very good. We have no back to basket post game, though Agara faces up fairly well in the post. We have one decent 3 point shooter in Clardy (though she had a rough game), and a number of players who shoot 3s just well enough to get into trouble. Ogden can work in the mid range and closer in, but she is the only player who creates much on her own. Swain, Clardy and a little Shay can drive sometimes, but it’s inconsistent and isn’t very efficient. I haven’t seen a back door hoop in weeks. Nothing works with any consistency on offense and hasn’t all year.

The mid season formula of really holding on defense and then grinding out just enough points on offense and with strong offensive rebounding has fallen apart at the end of the year. So far the staff has no solutions.

RE: WBB next two games - 81alum - 02-16-2026

One thing I noticed at the game.  When the teams were introduced, every Virginia starter was a grad student, a senior, or a redshirt junior.  And we had a bunch of freshmen.

Talented freshmen, but freshmen.  It was almost like a JV squad against a team of seniors.

Dunno whether this changes any analysis though.  I agree that we are underperforming our talent, even if we are performing exactly according to our experience.

This is what the football team is up against as well. The team has bled experienced players who have transferred and/or graduated with eligibility remaining so that the team is constantly relying on substantial contributions from frosh and sophomores while opponents are loaded with seniors and 5th years. This cycle looks to be playing on repeat for football and perhaps for women's and men's hoops as well. I don't see how these teams  get out of continual catch-up/rebuilding mode in the current environment.
