RE: A Word on the Stanford Tree (and what the university is doing to kill it) - BostonCard - 06-15-2026

Alabama fans would not like their school called University of Stanford or Stanford University, because their school is the University of Alabama, any more than Stanford fans would like their school called University of Harvard (or Harvard University, for that matter).  Whether Stanford fans would be bothered by the school being called “University of Stanford” is another question.

Can't think of a school named after a person to have the name come after "of," but....

Yeah, it's definitely the off-season for Stanford sports.

We forgave Marbury and although StanUSwagU never led us to a Sweet Sixteen, like Marbury did, we'll forgive him too. I think there was or is a poster on one of the GT sites that uses the handle GeorgiaTechU and has a picture of Marbury as his/her avatar.

Tech has been the Georgia Institute of Technology since 1948 when it changed its name from the Georgia School of Technology. It is also part of the answer to fairly frequent AFLAC trivia contests during our broadcasts: "What are the five FBS programs without 'University' in their official institutional name."

Boston College
Georgia Institute of Technology
United States Air Force Academy
United States Military Academy
United States Naval Academy

And when we play Clemson, yes Voldemort coached both schools.

As a public research university that is part of the University System of Georgia and grants undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees across 70 distinct disciplines, Georgia Tech is a university in every sense of the word. It's just not in the name.

Interestingly, someone was making a push to adopt "The I" they way Miami has adopted "The U". Easy hand signal.....

Oh you can call us Tech, you can call us The Institute, you can call us NATS, you can call us Yellow Jackets, you can call us Jackets, you can call us Buzz although most don't, you can call us Georgia Tech, you can call us The Georgia Institute of Technology, you can call us Geee Teee, you can call us G Tech, you can call us The Engineers, you can call us the Blacksmiths or Golden Tornado but only if you've circled the sun more than a hundred times, you can call us Ga Tech, you can call us the Ramblin' Wreck, and you can call us Nerds. Just don't, under penalty of death, call us Bulldogs.

Georgia Tech is also one of the few Universities with three nicknames, Engineers, Yellow Jackets, Ramblin' Wreck.  The only other one I can think of is Auburn (Tigers, Plainsmen, War Eagle)

and here's a Stanford song to the music of the Ramblin' Wreck song....

Oh, there's the road to Menlo

As plain, as plain can be.
And if you want to see a wreck
Just take a look at me.
For I have been to Menlo and tasted of the beer;
And that's the reason my eyes are weak
And I had to rest a year.

I wish I had an ocean of rum and sugar a million pound.
The dear old Quad to mix it in.
The chimney to stir it round
I'd drink a toast to the cardinal so glorious and so true,
and join in the rollicking chorus To hell with the Gold and Blue.

That is an impressive pull, 82lsju!

As is the case with many a college song, they are all stolen from somewhere. I'll never forget the first time I heard the Stanford Jonah after spending the entire night out and about before rolling into a foggy Stanford Stadium for Big Game '85.  I know I'm out of it, but wait, what?

As fellow alumni of the I (yeah, that doesn't really work, does it?) Ramblin' Wreck traces its lineage back to a 19th century Irish drinking titled "Son of a Gambolier". It was first adopted by Yale and then by Dickinson College (home of our very own MizzouCard), South Dakota Mines, Colorado Mines, Ohio State, and RPI. Mines was my second or third choice ultimately and I remember going home my first summer getting a bunch of grief from high school friends who stayed in Golden over how we stole their song. I think that grief was not misplaced.  Here are the lyrics to Mines' fight song, The Mining Engineer, and they are careful to point out it predates Tech's "famous version" by more than 30 years:

I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three hundred pounds.
The college bell to mix it in and a clapper to stir it 'round.
Like every honest fellow, I take my whiskey clear,
I'm a ramblin' wreck from Golden Tech, a helluva engineer.

My only reply was 'Yeah, well we use three thousand pounds of sugar with our barrel of rum and we're famous. Let me know when Mines is getting destroyed by Georgia on national TV.'

Tech's presidency just opened up if anyone is interested. Hard shoes to fill, but I hear the house is nice.

Hi 82lsju,

Hope all is well:

(1) Above I was using shorthand; See equation below for clarification.

(2) GaTech =  Georgia Institute of Technology = GeorgiaTech Yellow Jackets

Then why write University after GaTech?

and FYI, it is the University of Notre Dame not Notre Dame University

Georgia Tech is GaTech
Massachusetts Institute of Technology is MIT
California Institute of Technology is CalTech
Carnegie Mellon is, in fact, CMU.
I could go on, but nah.

and do true sports fans refer to UND (University of Notre Dame) as Notre Dam University?

surprised you did not bring Cal Tech (California Institute of Technology, not Cal Tech University) into the thread......

Hi 82lsju,

Hope all is well,

I think what people are trying to convey here is to look at the substance of the post or opinion, not to fixate or nitpick (as martyup said) on the different ways a University can be named or referenced;  I am going to hazard a guess that when I said 'GaTech University' that 90% of the people on this sports-board knew I was talking about Georgia Tech University, just like even though directly up above  you write 'Notre Dam University'  or earlier when you wrote 'Norte Dame University' (before you corrected it), we all knew what you were referring to.

Hope that helps clarify things a little.

MS in ISyE from Georgia Tech and yes your meaning seemed obvious….

Totally agree. After all, there's no "University" after St. Mary's, either...but for different reasons.   :D

I seem to remember Cardboarders chuckling at a football recruit tweeting about his offer from the University of Stanford.
