Alex Carter is REALLY impressive.  Looking back to the last time we beat Oregon, I believe combination of strong defense and Toby running downhill all day long.  Do we have enough defense, and enough o-line execution to repeat that???

Still looked better than NUNES to me, considering HES finally seeing live action IN WEEK EFFING 9.
at least Nottingham is decisive, strong armed and can run.  I don't ever want to see Nunes on the field again, he plays with great timidity, that should be obvious to you and Shaw by now.

We do not have a quarterback controversy, but we now have a quarterback.  Hogan is the guy.  Shaw said something like,  'the door opened, and he walked through it."  I think Hogan starts against the Beavs.

The four most valuable positions in the NFL are QB, LT, shutdown corner, and elite pass rusher.  Among the Freshmen, we've got Hogan at QB, Peat and/or Murphy at LT, and Carter at CB.  Who's gonna be that elite pass rusher among the Freshmen?

I wonder what the QB-coach dynamic was like between Nottingham and Shaw during Nottingham's time on the field today.  He, too, turfed a few balls (doh) in front of receivers.

Yep but with all the spread offenses you need 3 really good, fast corners.  Hopefully Lyons and a few others step up.

Before Lyons injury last year, he was an absolute big play freak out there.  Hopefully, with time, he will get back to his original explosiveness, much like Skov.

Count me among those don't see a controversy. Hogan is clearly the guy based on today's game.

As for Nottingham.... while I have been more accepting than some others here of the coaches' evaluation of the QBs on the roster, I don't think it's fair to judge him based only on these one or two series. That's especially so after the mental roller coaster he must have been on this season going from likely starter to backup to being passed by a freshman. But it does answer the question posed by a few here along the lines of "why not give Nottingham a series to see what he can do".

giving Shaw and Hamilton a bit of credit - socalstanfan1 - 11-04-2012

I have shared many people's obvious frustration at Shaw's continued commitment to Nunes when it seemed Nunes was just not the right guy for the job.  But, while we shouldn't read too much into one game against a dreadful defense, Hogan certainly looked the part of a big-time college QB today, and I think Shaw and Hamilton deserve some credit for that.  We can continue to hammer them for not making the decision earlier, and muse about the "what if" scenarios regarding Washington and Notre Dame, but I seem to recall Hogan having a terrible outing at the last open practice before the season started, when we suddenly realized he was a new name in the QB derby.  It seems to me that Hogan has just progressed increadibly rapidly from the Spring until now, for which both he and the coaches deserve some credit.

Assuming that Hogan actually continues his development and becomes at least an above average college QB (or, heck, we might all be happy with just good, solid average right now, which would win with our D), I can't help but compare the situation with our regional rival.  Cal has recruited a number of highly regarded QBs , many of whom were ranked as 4-stars coming out of HS by at least one of the recruiting boards: Allen Bridgford (2009); Austin Hinder (2010); Kyle Boehm (2011); and Zach Kline (2012).  Maybe Kline will develop after red shirting, but so far none of the others has been able to seize the position, despite working with a supposed QB guru.  (Though Kline will probably have to end up working with someone else after this season).  If Hogan ends up being the real deal, we should all realize that, despite the frustration of the early part of this season, our QB situation could be a lot worse.  And if Hogan is in place for next year, it allows Burns to come in and redshirt, get adjusted to college, and the new playbook, and be groomed properly before being thrown into the fire.

It's only one game against an awful opponent, but I'm more optimistic now about both the QB situation, and the coaching situation, than I was 2 weeks ago.

I think we should refrain from deeming Burns the next great QB. He hasn't played a college snap and his team last year was very run-centric. One of the lessons we should have learned from Nunes v Nottingham is that recruiting information doesn't mean much.
