Do you dispute the $6.2M figure I've been told is the amount it takes for him to be kicked loose?Â
What is your understanding of the amount and mechanics for his removal? I really don't care, because I want him to stay, but you seem to have some knowledge of the situation, whaddaya got?

I think folks are saying that Tedford has no buyout clause for a lesser amount in his contract, so the university is responsible to pay him his full salary (less anything he makes from other work, etc.) if they fire him. I take it the $6.2 million is his full salary.

Here's the contract.
http://www.coacheshotseat.com/CaliforniaCoachesHotSeat.pdf
The salary is only $225,000 per year, but it's the talent fee and retention bonus that make it expensive. The guaranteed talent fee is $1,575,000. So, that's The last paragraph on page two indicates that he gets a pro-rata portion of a retention bonus. It appears that he gets $1.5 million for paragraph two on section 9, AND a portion of the $1 million in paragraph 3. He receives $250,000 for being the head coach when the new stadium opened (this may have already been paid).
Lowell Cohn (
http://cohn.blogs.pressdemocrat.com/16089/jeff-tedfords-contract-in-black-and-white/) estimates Tedford's salary at $2.3 million per year, which is a figure I've seen elsewhere. So, that would be $6.9 million for the three remaining years. In addition to that, UCB is on the hook for any assistant coaches under contract. They tend to have one or two year contacts, so while it's not a big consideration, it's still a cost.

My point, and that of my sources, even if I'm off by $700k, and net of the assistant coaches, is that it's cost prohibitive, and no one's stepping up. I find it amusing.

Ah, then we're on the same page. My pint is that it's [i]even more[/] expensive, probably upwards of $8 million.

I've heard discussions are already under way with his agent to work on a buyout. No, there is no fixed buyout less than the value of the contract, but to get rid of the guy, he has to be paid.Â
My guess is Tedford will be offered the opportunity to resign rather than be fired if he is cooperative in terms of structuring the payments he is contractually due.Â
His team is going to finish 3-9. With the debt service for CMS, California can't afford to keep Tedford any longer. Moreover, the football program is suppose to be the economic engine to fund a large part of the athletic department. That can't be done with waning interest in the football program, lots of empty seats, and donation support drying up, all on the decline right now, and can only get worse if Tedford is retained.

That's not entirely true garvin. I imagine that Tedford may find it beneficial to accept a lower buyout than the remainder of his contract, if it allows him to continue his career at a different institution, where he can reboot his career while making a second salary, potentially making more total money than if he had stayed at kal.
Perhaps he can look at Rick Neuheisel, a coach who seemingly has made everyone forget about his terrible stint at ULCA, in less than a full season as a Pac-12 networks analyst, and whose name I've seen mentioned for possible vacancies. And he's making whatever salary the P-12 network is paying him.
I can't think of a specific example of this happening before, but I'm sure it has and I can see the appeal for Tedford.

The reason the Tedsel might accept a buyout is because there's a clause in his contract that requires him to seek work in college/NFL immediately (and for the university to decrease their payments by whatever amount he's paid in salary). Jeff might prefer the security of a certain lump sum.
The most hilarious thing about this whole ordeal is the delusions of 59er fans. They are so sure they'll have an awesome coach. I brought up Willie Taggart as a possibility to one 59er fan, and you would've thought I suggested a round of non-alcoholic beer and cooking chocolate for everyone. As if the 59ers are too good for Willie Taggart. Hah.
Anyway, this is going to be handled badly. How do I know this? Because if kal were interested in handling this well, they would've fired T.edford already and gotten the jump on a coaching search -- just like Arizona did last year. If they wait til the end of the season, who knows what happens -- maybe Kiffin gets fired, maybe Chip Kelly decides he wants the NFL. Then, instead of first in line on West Coast jobs, you're second or third. Oops. (There's also the risk of missing out on a hot coach somewhere else. SJSU's Mike MacIntyre is supposedly a leading candidate for the Kentucky job. Now, maybe you want him, maybe you don't -- but he's definitely someone who'd be on my list if I were Barbour.)
So here's what's going to happen: kal fires the Tedsel, they hire some no-name coordinator or mid-major guy with an undistinguished record, 59ers attempt to convince themselves that they've finally got their Moses to lead them to
Canaan Pasadena.

Not sure why he'd care to avoid the "seek work" part of the contract -- it doesn't obligate him to secure a job and I fail to see why he wouldn't want to (unless he likes to not work, but most head coaches don't fit that description).
How's his golf? Maybe UCB's women's golf could use an asst. coach or something.

Kentucky's already fired Joker Phillips, so any decent coach has probably been called by their AD already. kal is late to the game once again--should they choose to pursue this line of thought.
