Missing Devon Allen, Jordan Cunningha hurts, but is not devastating. Smythe would mitigate, as he is an Ertz-type TE who can split out wide and run routes like a WR.
Just puts a premium on a few of K. Whitfield, C. Crane, A. Jordan, M. Rector, F. Owusu, and T. Thomas developing into good WRs very fast.

I don't think it is over for Jordan Cunningham. Have you heard something OutsiderFan?

Sounds like Cunningham didn't get into Stanford.

Of the 3 I thought Cunningham was most likely. He said Stanford would be hard to turn down if he got admitted. He reports a 3.9. I find it hard to believe Shaw would even bother recruiting him if he hadn't taken the necessary AP classes.

"Sounds like Cunningham didn't get into Stanford"
What in particular sounds like it?

There's a thread over at Rivals with some rumormongering. Normally I wouldn't be so quick to believe a rumor but the thread was started by Andy Drukarev who happens to run that site.

I take everything back. There's no way we can even pretend this is a good class.

I'm shocked that Stanford didn't land 2 of the 3. Weird that this class didn't close as well as last year's class when these guys had the benefit of seeing Stanford win without Luck.

I am not aware of any thick envelopes in these last 4 (Allen, Cunningham, Smythe, Woods)

Cunningham and Woods didn't get admitted, Allen went with Oregon before hearing back from admissions, and Smythe didn't here back yet either but he grew up a ND fan so not that unexpected. Still not the end of the world IMO.

The upside here is more scholarships available for this supposedly deep 2014 class.

What did Andy Drukarev say about this year's recruiting class?

Ted Miller is on board the "this class is disappointing train", for whatever it's worth:

We've talked here about admissions and the small class, but I wonder if the perception that Shaw is simply winning with Harbaugh's players played a part. It may not be true, but in recruiting, perception can spur reality. Coaches negatively recruit, and that may have been used. Harbaugh sold the class of 2008 on building something from scratch. Players are certainly not going to flock to a program they perceive to be on the wrong side of a peak.

Is another possibility that this small group did not establish the real and virtual (twitter) esprit de corps that might have existed in last years class? That if you have a small class, the only way to steal some last minute recruits is to really have a buzz about the class that is in part due to members of that class firing up the group? And you have a smaller chance of having a couple of these team "whips" if you have a smaller class?
Sometimes you hear of recruiting classes being filled with characters whose enthusiasm fires everyone up. Is it possible that this class is a bunch of calm quiet leaders and maybe we simply didn't land a sparkplug or two?
Re: the quality of this class -

We've beaten the class-rating aspect to death. But obviously if you have a class of 20 four-star wideouts, you've failed as a recruiter. The needs coming into the class were at TE and LB, which Shaw filled both numerically and fairly good quality (Palma, Barton and Kalambayi are consensus four-stars; Hooper, Taboada and Cotton have all been rated w/ four-stars by at least one site, along with solid-to-excellent offer lists.)
Would've been nice to bring in a couple more DBs, but I don't think it's a crisis there (assuming Shaw et al. bring in a sufficient number in 2014.)
