Re: Spring Game. .. So far, not too bad - slide - 04-14-2013

1971 was a great year for Bunce.  the 1.9 ypc does not scream great runner to me though.

I saw Sullivan 3 or 4 times at home that season.  Terry Beasley seemed to make Sullivan a very good QB

1971 Tagge          143-239-12TD  2019
1972  Humm        140-266-11      2074
1976 Ferragamo  145-254-12      2071

After Vince the Huskers had to wait until 2004 for a QB to throw over 240 passes. But they have had over that number every year but 2010.

2004  Daly            155-310-11-2025
2005 Taylor          237-430-12-2643
2006 Taylor          233-391-26-3191
2007 Keller            205-375-14-2472
2008 Ganz            285-420-25-3568
2009 Lee              177-302-14-2143
2011 Martinez        162-288-13-2089
2012 Martinez        228-368-13-2871

Or, in Mildren's case, 5.8-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust. ;)  (Full team average: 6.4 ypc. My-oh-my, Greg Pruitt.)

Interesting that Pat Sullivan's (the third of the three QBs that you must be referencing) stats from that year don't look so impressive. His numbers from 1970 look better. Good enough to win the Voldemort though.

I think Crower throws a better spiral and much more catchable ball than Hogan, though he does seem to lack the zip that Hogan has.  I think Hogan's issues on the deep ball are due in part to his inability to throw a consistent spiral - he does not know exactly how far the ball is going to go.  Hopefully our receiver's can make more plays like Rector did, we are going to need it.

I agree with the poster who mentioned that Luke K. did not look so hot.  I read somewhere that he was working on catching the ball, makes me wonder where he started.  Fortunately the kid has several more months before it gets real.

From what I saw yesterday [when I wasn't standing in the autograph line at the back of the concourse to get Kulabafi to sign my Rose Bowl commemorative football, during which time Rector made his circus catch  >:( ] I think next year will allow us to witness an experiment that will answer an often-asked question:  how well would a very good/excellent SEC team do in the Pac-12 over the course of a season?

Very well, I hope...

Revising what I said earlier.  Just read that Hogan faced the 2nd team defense and Crower faced the 1st team defense.  Shaw did restrict the running dimension of Hogan's game, but does that mean Crower is the better pure passer?  I wasn't able to watch the game.  Any comment from those that did?

That's not accurate -- sometimes Hogan faced the first-string D and sometimes the second string; similiarly, Crower was matched up against both first- and second-stringers.

As to whether Crower's the best "pure" passer, I suppose it's a matter of opinion. Crower doesn't really challenge defenses downfield -- by temperament, mostly, since he can put nice touch on deep balls. On the other hand, he lacks the arm strength to fit the ball into tight windows on intermediate routes (whereas Hogan can and does that). Overall I felt Hogan's performance was stronger than Crower's, both statistically (7.4 YPA versus five point something or other) and with the naked eye. That obviously doesn't evaluate running, which Hogan is much stronger at (note that the playcalls gave Crower many more opportunities to rollout and move the pocket, which Hogan was denied -- presumably to get Hogan working on his weaknesses.)

Crower looks like a good, solid backup, though, so that's a good thing -- and a positive reflection on the coaches' developmental abilities.

Concur with what WIM said re qb's.  In addition, if I recall correctly, Hogan had at least a couple of drops by Kaumatule that he clearly should have had early on, and it disrupted the flow of the offence.
