hogan's second pick.  has the effect of a bad punt.

Re: Game thread: Stanford vs. ND - jeboody - 11-30-2013

hogan's just giving our D a chance to continue the turnover streak....right?

Re: Game thread: Stanford vs. ND - estephan500 - 11-30-2013

FIRST DOWN ... that's it. ... and gaffney will now get off the field and be placed in a high tech regeneration machine. or a bed.

Re: Game thread: Stanford vs. ND - Kathy - 11-30-2013

Gaffney's a machine!

Re: Game thread: Stanford vs. ND - Nan3cy - 11-30-2013

My nerves are shot. Hope Gaffney is fully healthy next week. Heaven only knows where we would have been without him tonight.

Re: Game thread: Stanford vs. ND - estephan500 - 11-30-2013

Stanford just did a favor for the Pac-12's reputation, and power rankings, tonight.

Re: Game thread: Stanford vs. ND - washingtonismoney - 11-30-2013

I try rarely to be infuriated or angry at a win, but we should've blown those guys out -- but they kept on getting fortunate calls and janky plays. Irrational, but it makes me feel unhappy about the win in a way that isn't fair. Oh well.

Re: Game thread: Stanford vs. ND - yvonne - 11-30-2013

Look at it this way: we won despite the refs.

Re: Game thread: Stanford vs. ND - twgin - 11-30-2013

I'm going to change my ID to "broken record".  Another typical win, goes without saying way more heartache than necessary.  In typical fashion, we began trying to run out the clock with about 45 seconds left in the first half and never looked up.  Forget attacking the opponent, too risky I guess.  As we all know, our ever innovative grind em into dust strategy usually works, right up until it doesn't and another chance at greatness goes up in smoke.

On a more positive note, I guess we are going to have to stop blaming the lack of a tight end now.

Re: Game thread: Stanford vs. ND - PrinceLightfoot - 11-30-2013

I am willing to bet that we did not show any exotic blitz or coverage packages this game in advance of the game that counts next week. We left our corners on an island several times with no over-the-top safety help and we only had one sack - not typical, but Rees was releasing that ball awfully quick resulting in four very real interception possibilities by my count (we only ended up with two). Not having Mauro in the game was also a factor but he should he 100% for the championship game next week; reports say he was at 80% so sitting him was precautionary.

Our offensive line was beat on a couple of occasions during the game but not enough to slow down a dominating performance from Gaffney. Our Elephant package has shown a backside vulnerability if the corner crashes down the line. There was also a lack of deep passes given they were playing with limited safety experience. I was very happy to see Dudchock (TE) used for those short-intermediate pass ranges three times, but overall I was once again confused by the playcalling mostly in the 2nd half.

Re: Game thread: Stanford vs. ND - washingtonismoney - 11-30-2013

The other odd thing about the game was its treatment of Cajuste. We were able to take advantage of N.D.'s odd alignment against him -- playing their LB Jaylon Smith with inside coverage and lining the safety over the top several times...and then stopped going his way. Was there something up there that someone noticed?

My main frustration with the offense continues to be the amount of time Pratt and Trojan get. Pratt is, post-UCLA, the second starter after Montgomery... but Cajuste and Rector are simply better, more threatening players. (Or even Whitfield. Or Owusu.) Cajuste is probably still shaking off his injury, so that choice is understandable; but Pratt/Trojan over Rector and Whitfield is one of the more bizarre choices I've seen. I don't know why we decided to have them in for the two minute drill drive, which forces Hogan to dink and dunk down the field -- something he was mostly able to do, but ultimately is going to fail. (That sack...)

I think the main problem with the offense is that it's too creative; too willing to use a hodgepodge of personnel. It needs a guy possessed of some common sense to simply ask, "OK. Rector, Cajuste and Owusu are way more athletic than these two walk-ons. Why are you playing the walk-ons?" Nothing against Pratt and Trojan, who work hard and aren't bad at all. But plays are a limited resource; you allocate them to your best personnel.

Re: Game thread: Stanford vs. ND - estephan500 - 12-01-2013

Hmm. In this case I don't know much of what you guys are talking about with the "heartache" and "should have ground these guys into dust." ND is not a crappy team. Pretty skilled. You guys are mad that it was a ball game. I have shared in the frustration you guy are discussing when we threw away brobdingnagian leads or kept a truly bad opponent close behind us. I didn't see that this game. I hope we can avoid what I have heard if Oregon fan syndrome... Screaming at your team for not being 4 TDs ahead.

Re: Game thread: Stanford vs. ND - Bruce Wang - 12-01-2013

Style points count when it's against your toughest recruiting rival.  That's my frustration.  That and it seemed like once again we were playing against the ND's home conference officials.

PrinceLightfoot makes a good point.  Mason sent the Blitz very few times and when he did, it was effective.

On the other side of the ball, Shaw's play conservatism and odd risk taking is mystifying.  The end of the 1st half really irked me.  The bad clock management at the end cost us another score.  That and throwing on 3rd and short.  Shaw picks odd times to take risks and get creative.  He also seems to go for the obvious creative play.  I often think "We should do X" and then we call that play.  If we do something I think we should do, then it's probably a really bad idea.

I wonder if Sanford will be a good play caller.  He did spend 4 years holding a clipboard standing next to Chris Petersen.
