Man...I can't let this nerdgasm go by without dropping in my 2 cents.
Junta sounds very interesting. I think I remember hearing about it a little while back, but I haven't played it. I may have to give it a closer look.
Also, I wholeheartedly agree that Race for the Galaxy (RFTG) is a great game. However, I wouldn't want to teach someone the game cold. My recommendation would be to start with a game called San Juan. The designers of San Juan and RFTG were working together on a card game version of another famous game, Puerto Rico, and they worked on many of the game concepts together. Ultimately, the simpler version of the game was selected to become San Juan, and the developer of RFTG decided to continue working on his ideas and released it as the re-themed space card game. San Juan has many of the same concepts (such as a cards having duel building/currency uses, production cards, role selection) but is simplified (no military-style worlds like in RFTG, sequential action selection, easier production rules). My wife would NEVER play a game like RFTG cold, but after teaching her San Juan, she picked up RFTG pretty quickly and enjoys it.
To throw another recommendation out there - I really enjoy Glory to Rome. It's a card game in the same vein as San Juan and RFTG, but is a bit wackier and more player interaction.

There's a smartphone app version of Dominion - I've literally played 2000 games of it on my phone. I have the board game version too, but it's more effort to organise people to play with.

Bridge is the greatest game ever invented. Brilliant and infinite, plus social.Â
I know the chess geeks will now jump in. No: Chess cannot be a great game because I'm not good at it.Â

Garvin, you need to tell everybody your stories about being in Nicaragua. The private board would be the perfect place if you're worried about Daniel Ortega reading it.

The greatest game is NCAA 2011 on XBox. Play as Stanford and just press the pass button and Andrew will make a completion almost every single time. On the defensive side, just watch Shayne do his thing. In the game, you get to live out the alternate timeline where Skov doesn't suffer a season ending injury and therefore stops Oregon on the way to a national championship.

I'm a big CoD fan. And by CoD I am of course referring to "Cones of Dunshire".

Good luck finding it on Amazon.

Nope. I don't have that one. I am about to make another order. (Never enough...) - but that's going to fall below the fold.
Everything else mentioned here is good.
But if el mono likes Glory To Rome, I'd suggest Innovation instead. (Same author, but better game balance.)
And Bridge is the one true game. (I like to be able to blame luck rather than my own shortcomings, as I would have to in Chess.)

poker's still the best card game.
Computers ruined chess -- needs to switch to Fischer Random.
