Mexican food in Red Bluff? - Redrum - 05-25-2014
"Cows? in Berkeley?"Â
To which Mijares the Elder would say. "Red Bluff? Sure. Why not? You stole
whole state from us."

The best Mexican food I've had so far (including some, but not a lot, in San Diego) is at Juan's in Berkeley. They're also right next to the Rare Barrel, a sour beer brewery that my buddy works out, so I'm there fairly frequently. Fortunately it's pretty far from the den of iniquity.

All this chat about Mexican food. Are you sure the title of this thread is not "Our mole sauce at the Chron..."?

There's a Mexican place in DC that I think is pretty solid, but I'm worried my standards are slipping. :(

Hmmm. That's a good point. Maybe that's why I find these Boston-area places decent. I do make it back to San Diego at least once a year. And the next time, I promised myself and Skip Bayless's brother that I'd make a run for the border. Or at least walk across.
I'm definitely eating Mexican food tomorrow.

Rosa Mexicano, across from the Verizon Center, is excellent. This is high end Mexican in the same price range as Tres Agaves in San Francisco. Try the guacamole. One of the few places where the sangria is worth ordering. Unfortunately, frequented by a lot of political staffers.

I've more than a few Dick's Deluxes. Meh. I'd rather go to Kidd Valley or Burgermaster.

Absurd. Half pound burgers are there just to jack up the price. A burger, like all sandwiches (and life, if I may be so bold) is all about balance. Equal meat and soft bun (skip the brioche, etc.) cheese, preferably cheap American, onions, grilled or raw (this is America, afterall, and we each have our rights) lettuce (leafed or shredded; see onions) tomatoe. Pickles are acceptable, but not preferred. Most, but not sll, of the burgers on this list leave me cold. Fried egg? Maybe in Oz but not here. So, lets play show and tell. Best burgers ever eaten by you, whether a chain or otherwise, whether then is a chance in Hell anyone else has ever heard of the joint other than you or not. I'll start (thanks for asking.)
(In no particular order)
In-N-Out
The Waterfront (dive bar) Little Italy San Diego
Tom's Farm (between Riverside and Temecula, Interstate 15)
Nessie Burger, highway 76 offramp of 15 fwy, Fallbrook, Ca
Grillaburger, Rancho Mirage
Sliders at Mai Tai Bar, Royal Hawaiin, Honolulu, Hawaii (maybe the on the sand location influences this inclusion a bit.)
Bob's Big Boy (get the combo with Silver Goblet Milkshake; trust me.)
Tooeys, Alhambra, CA (Stinko Burger.)
Your turn.

Not in even the slightest, tiniest way correct.Â

If you haven't been to the Mustard Grill and had the hamburger, you've missed out. Cheap American cheese isn't bad, but not what I'd put on Mt. Hamburgermore. You are correct on both pickles and brioche. Onions are a must, same w/lettuce.Â

I'll go with:
1. Mustard Grill as noted above.
2. Clarke's Charcoal Broilers in Mountain View. Sigh....
3. Kirk's Burgers not quite on the same level as Clarke's, but darn close.
4. In-N-Out. For what they are, you betcha...
Most overrated for me, Original Joe's. And actually, based on their 1/2 pound burger, I agree with Ferrari. Just because it's a half pound of meat doesn't mean anything. Fixin's have to be perfect.

I've quite enjoyed Umami Burger in Santa Monica. The offshoot, in New York, was not quite as good.

I've had a lot of good-to-exceptional burgers but the best ones are those where friends are present. A Kobe burger by yourself in a hotel bar just doesn't get it. I vote for the Zot's burger after a Stanford win.

I'll make a second mention of Clarke's in Mtn View (and previously, Carke's in Menlo Park).
Back in the day, Hamburger Hamlet (in So. Cal.)
Never for sale, and unfortunately no longer available, the ones my father cooked on the backyard grill.

I miss my dad's, too.

I recall in a land long ago and far away eating a Zott's double cheese burger and a boat of fries and not feeling at all full, if i did that now I think I'd explode  :)

The truffle burger at the Santa Monica location was possibly the best burger I've ever had based on taste alone.

Just last week a close friend asked me for a burger recommendation and I replied without hesitation, "Umami in Santa Monica".Â
Unfortunately, we were in New Orleans at the time and he was looking for a lunch spot.
A few burgers really are worth twenty bucks. I enjoyed my first Umami burger after the Rose Bowl pep rally earlier this year. We passed another CardBoarder on the street shortly afterwards and I was too wrapped up in burger heaven to notice their shirt until Mrs. BEC pointed it out.

Robbie- The draw of Dicks was always the fries. Though, stopping there for a deulxe and fries before a Sonics or Breakers/Thunderbirds game was a family tradition for megrowing up. I agree though, in Seattle the Burgermaster Master Burger is the one I have to get when I go back to visit my parents. The Kirkland location had better food than the U district location IMHO.

Here in the Big Easy, my favorite burger spot is Yo Mama's, a dive bar in the heart of the French Quarter.

I've tried some higher end burger places here but keep going back to Yo Mama's. The atmosphere might have something to do with it, but the burgers are pretty darn tasty too!

Yes! We stopped there at the suggestion of a random person at a gas station in Las Cruces on our way to visit family in Albuquerque. Thank you, random person!
