I'm sure WBB already does do that. But the players still have to have the ability and desire to follow through.

07 every coaching staff at Stanford does as you suggest. In some sport coaches are looking at HS frosh, can't talk to them but certainly can look at transcripts.  I was at a WBB game and a 7th grader played. tanford coaches where there, the team outstanding so reasons other than the 7th grader. But I do know they followed her from then on.Â

Brief update I saw on an Aussie site I frequent called Pick and Roll. It recapped the recently concluded U20 WBB Tournament
All-Tournament Team
Alanna Smith (VIC) 19.8 ppg, 9.1 rpg, 1.4 apg, 50% FG Smith was coming off an impressive performance at the FIBA Oceania U19 Championships and she carried her great form over to this tournament. She dominated the paint on both ends of the floor and looked like the most comfortable player all tournament. Stanford is getting a great pickup in Smith, who is our pick as tournament MVP.

This site also lists future prospects, birthdays in 1997 and on. Might be nice to track them if Stanford decides Down Under is a good recruiting.

Web site also follows the WNBL, where Ms. Ruef just finished her season.

Nice to see Alanna Smith doing so well, but will that translate quickly next year? Based on the uneven performances this year and the loss of Orrange and Bonnie from next year's team, we could use an impact freshman right away.

One of the best Aussie prospects in the 2016 class is Alex Sharp - 6'1" wing that has elite athleticism and can do a bit of everything. Reminds me a little of McPhee but probably not as polished from outside the 3. IMO, she is the best talent in the country and would probably be a 5 star if in the US right now(although I would have said the same about Alanna and she was rated a 3!).
Averaged 13 and 10 in the National U/20 tournament that just wrapped up. Academics not an issue for her either.

Academics always an issue sadly.
Alanna Smith is a five star on Prospects Nation which is probably the top site

Since we are not doing so well in getting the elite American recruits, might as well try Down Under.

Yes, that is the question. And the coaches themselves cannot answer it yet. They say over and over that you do not know "what you are going to get" until the players show up, and even then, the players usually make most of their improvement between freshman and sophomore years. Players that are not starting and contributing in their sophomore year are unlikely to become impact players.
There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic that Smith can contribute immediately, though. The fact that she is an awesome rebounder means that Tara will be likely to play her even if she can do nothing else. But the descriptions and tape we have seen shows her to be a crafty finisher under the basket with a variety of moves. Alanna is far more experienced and knows more moves than a typical freshman would.

Yes, Alanna is listed as one of four international 5 stars along with Angela Salvadores of Spain, Cecilia Sandalasini of Italy, and Laura Cornelius of the Netherlands. She is the only post. Of the four only she and Salvadores so far are headed to the US for college (unless something has changed since they updated the public part of their site), so one can say that she and Angela are the top two international players to choose to play in the US next year.

No Kat Tudor for us. Great great shooter.
But Ace scored 33 in 20 minutes last night. Only HS and in BC still impressive
If possible check out Menlo Atherton HS who will play this weekend for the CCS championship in their division. Their frosh post Hoyem scored 20 with 16 rebounds. Daughter of OT Steve. Team is coached by our own Mariksa Coleman

BobK - the Merc article that Garvin posted in a separate thread included this recruiting nugget.
Quote:Kinnebrew has two top players and students who would like to attend Stanford. He's not sure either will gain admittance. One is Dijonai Carrington, a 6-foot junior shooting guard/small forward from San Diego. Her brother Darren Jr. is a standout receiver for Oregon and father Darren Carrington was an NFL defensive back on two Super Bowl teams.
Have you seen Carrington? Is she on Tara's radar screen?
Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting -

Posting on several Boards means I leave out things. Stanford was Carrington's dream school in a story when she was a frosh. Carrington missed her Soph year with an ACL. But really outstanding this season.
No I have never seen her play. I believe we are strongly recruiting her and this story backs that up. I'm trying to figure out who the other player is.

WEst is the other player we are recruiting on Kinnebrew's Cal_Sparks team.Â
Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting -

According to ESPN HoopGurlz, DiJonai Carrington is a 4-star recruit, ranked #34 overall in the 2016 class.
From their analysis:
Quote:"Nike Tournament of Champions-December 2014: Strong, agile and versatile perimeter performer finishes in traffic; brings respect, stretches the defense to the arc; dribble-drive creator finishes in traffic. (Olson)
Nike Nationals-July 2014: Strong, athletic and versatile perimeter prospect; explosive leaper, active on glass; mismatch producer, manufactures in mid-range game; developing deep-threat consistency; big-guard game. (Olson)"
They also had an article on her:
http://espn.go.com/espnw/news-commentary/article/12014023/amid-super-bowls-rose-bowl-budding-basketball-star-grows
The article says we are recruiting her and she has a 4.24 GPA, so that bodes well.

Carrington and West are on the first post of this thread. Good to know they are still in the running as the list dwindles.

Cox is definitely out:
http://espn.go.com/espnw/news-commentary/article/12560895/why-one-coach-want-no-1-junior-lauren-cox-team
That leaves the following as potential recruits we have mentioned here that have not been ruled out:
Anna Wilson (committed)
Natalie Chou.Â
I can't find anything recent on her that discloses her preferences. She is being pursued by pretty much everyone.
Dijonai CarringtonÂ

"There have been kids rejected at Stanford who have been wonderful and accomplished women."
Celeste WestÂ
(Says she is "wide open."Â Has a 4.3.)
http://www.bakersfield.com/bakersfieldlife/2015/02/27/all-star-athlete-c-j-west.html
Aislinn Konig (Canada)
I can't find anything recent. She has played in Washington State quite a bit. We were on her list in January.
http://blogs.theprovince.com/2015/01/18/aislinn-konig-brookswoods-special-one-never-rests-wants-to-leave-her-mark-on-game-in-bc/
Alex Sharp (Australia)
I can't find a thing
Now, why is recruiting suffering? I found this quote interesting from the Merc article:
Quote:A lot has been made of football coaches working with admissions to upgrade recruits without sacrificing academics. But the women's basketball team remains held to Stanford's rigid acceptance standards. Cardinal coaches can only consider about five of the top 100 high school players, VanDerveer said.
"I can get a kid into an Ivy school so much easier than to Stanford," said Elbert Kinnebrew, who runs an elite AAU program in Long Beach.
I take that to mean that our standards really are lowered somewhat for football but not for women's basketball. And we need to keep in mind that Stanford's rigorous academic standards have actually shot through the roof to ridiculous levels for all students lately. Last year we admitted 5%. Just four years ago it was 7.5%. In 2006 it was 12.7%. In the 1980s-1990s it was 15-20%. It is twice as hard to get in as it was just 10 years ago, four times as hard as when Tara started.

The implications of which are that the field so narrow/pool so small that any player with national championship level aspirations should go elsewhere. See KLS.
Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting -
TheFarm07 - 06-01-2015
What about other sports? I am not familiar with non-basketball and non-football sports recruiting, but from what I read on this message board and on Stanford's webpage, we are doing decently well in sports like volleyball, tennis, etc. But I have no basis in comparison, so I could be totally off the mark.
It would be sad if the women's basketball team's long-running success ends because of these unreasonable admissions standards. I am all for the high standards of admitting the best and brightest, but this seems beyond fair reason.
I know the acceptance rate has dropped because more students are applying, but is that because there are more potential applicants that have a chance to get in to choose from now as from 10-20 years ago (i.e. 20 years ago, there was 6,000 4.0 GPA/1600 SAT high school seniors and now there are 12,000 4.0 GPA/2400 SAT seniors?)
