Pretty common sociological phenomenon, I think; e.g., the more interested I am in her, the less interested she is in me.

When I was in college I became infatuated with this one particular girl. To be honest, I kind of considered her a bit out of my league, but I convinced myself that if I loved her, really showed how worthy and devoted I could be, everything could work out and she would be swept along by my passion. We actually ended up going out for a while, but, predictably, it did not end well. A good lesson learned the hard way.

I sometimes think that this is the psychological process going on with some of the recruits that court Stanford. A sense that, if they just devote themselves to the university, say the right things, show enough passion, that they can sweep admissions off its feet and everything can work out (even if, inside, they have nagging doubts).

I was talking with a kal alumnus yesterday.  (It was for work.  Of course, I wouldn't voluntarily socialize with the enemy.)

The conversation naturally went to football, and then recruiting.  You should have seen the look on his face when I told him that Stanford asks recruits to take 2 AP classes in their senior year.  He thought for a minute and then said, "I guess they just get a C or a D in those classes and find a way to get the overall GPA up to the minimum."

I had a roommate who graduated from San Jose State with an accounting degree and better than decent grades.  He worked at the local office of a Big Eight accounting firm.  He was bound and determined to get into the very best MBA school he could, so he took GMAT (did well, but not out of this world), procured the US News and WR Top 25 MBA school list and proceeded to apply to every one on the list.

He was circumspect about the process.  He knew he didn't have the world's greatest specifications, but he gamely applied to every MBA school in the Top 25, and was very pleased to be accepted to Cornell....currently ranked #17 and if memory serves, was about the same at the time.

Maybe I should just say if you are really interested in recruiting join Andy.  The Cardboard is a great site with great fans but for information join Andy.  :) :D ;D
