Interesting the Scarlett statement not there anymore

Re: It's official: Scarlett to Stanford - PrinceLightfoot - 03-11-2015

Looks like the statement is back up.

I thought he was very gracious towards his old school and his last paragraph was an exceptionally handled some of the less than gentlemanly comments (and actions) directed at him in the wake of his departure was very well-handled.

It reflects very well on him.

I guess because of the work experience thing (and because of graduate transfer rules), although I think most people who get into the GSB wouldn't have anywhere near the math background needed for an MS&E masters (of course, this is based on friends of mine)...

Re: It's official: Scarlett to Stanford - donkey687 - 03-11-2015

This makes me very happy on 3 levels.

1) We really need Defensive Ends. Despite his injuries, he is more proven than anyone on our roster at DE.  If healthy, he should be a meaningful contributor and one of the more important guys on the team given lack of depth here.

2) This just really grates Cal fans. I am sorry but I must admit this makes me happy.  He was voted team captain last year so it isn't like he was a guy with a bad attitude who didn't like Cal.

3) It takes the sting out of Wayne Lyons leaving. It bums me out that he would leave his final year at Stanford where he likely would have started.  I have a lot of Stanford pride, and I don't like it when a current player sees greener pastures in Ann Arbor.  We have more depth at CB than DE so I think the net effect of the Scarlett Lyons transfer is positive for Stanford.

In the worst case, he backs up Thomas and Shittu and is in for short yardage and goal line.

He's not an option at nose tackle under any reasonable circumstances.

And if he can stay healthy, he's a godsend.  Against no-huddle teams particularly, we need at least five good defensive linemen. Scarlettt gives us a credible fourth guy, after Shittu, Thomas, and Phillips, with hopes for a fourth coming from Wesley Annan or Luke Kaumatule, or a position switch from the offense, where Greg Taboada, a very good hs DE with a big frame, would be my hope and pick.

In sum, the top 4 DL project to be two true sophomores who need to add a lot of weight and two seniors who need to recover from serious knee injuries.  In addition, there are two incoming freshmen who need to get into college shape and a potential switch from TE who would need to fill out his frame.  I am so glad that Stanford was able to retain Shannon Turley.  I hope he works magic.

I remember reading about Lohn when he committed to Stanford (he was in the class with Watkins, Shittu and Nwafor, also Kaumatule). I remember the coach that recruited him talking about his gift of natural strength. And I wondered why he didn't develop as a nose tackle. He's 6'3" I think, not on the tall side like Henry Anderson and Mauro. Anyway, he, Phillips, and Watkins are getting lots of snaps in the spring practice sessions.

So, a lot of hand wringing here was based on several incorrect assumptions that were never reported anywhere.

Wow Yikes is petty & pretty classless.  Thank the kid for three years, congratulate him on graduating, and wish him luck.  Let's the fans whine about it.

At least the interim AD is handling it properly.

Hand wringing and incorrect assumptions?

That never happens on an internet message board.

Agreed, a very graceful response by Brennan. Hope he stays healthy this fall!

Re: It's official: Scarlett to Stanford - Treebound - 03-11-2015

Thanks for posting the letter, BobK.  It's a classy and well thought out thank you letter.  I understand some of the Old (and some of the immature) Blues being unhappy about his decision.  The BI thread is about what I expect of our rivals.  The thin envelope has a way of bringing out anger and vitriol from many an insecure mind.  It's why Dean Fred started telling people that he was in the "intelligence community" whenever he was asked about his job.  Here in the Bay Area we are going to run into many angry, jealous, etc... UCB alums that use the hate word.

The GSB story didn't make sense to me unless he was pursuing a PhD.  He would have brought very little to a GSB classroom.  The MSE is a great outcome for him and I wish him luck on and off the field.  The chance to play with his brother is clearly an added bonus that holds meaning to him.  He's had a rough road at UCB (injury and program wise), hopefully his luck is changing with this decision.

He found the back door to get his hands on The Axe.  I hope he has a big game during Big Game.

That was a well written and classy letter.  It's too bad that some Kal fans vandalized his car. $EC behavior. I guess I expect too much from our rivals across the bay.

Hopefully the vandalism and ill will from some of the Kal fan base provides some extra motivation for him during Big Game:

Where's the +1 when you need it!?!?

Re: It's official: Scarlett to Stanford - OutsiderFan - 03-12-2015

I think it's awesome to see Cal people have that much passion to vandalize his car, but wish they would express it differently, in a more positive and constructive way.

Quote:I think it's awesome to see Low APR U people have that much passion to vandalize his car

??? Was that tongue in cheek?

I wouldn't consider the small amount of effort it takes to vandalize a car as a sign of passion. Anyone can take the keys out of their pocket and scratch up somebodies paint job. This should in no way be viewed in a positive light.
