Reading an espnW article about Class of 2017 recruit Naje Murray and found this interesting tidbit on why Stanford is not on her list:

"Among college teams, she used to cheer for Stanford, but she said Stanford's style of play is too slow for her now."

Interesting, but I would not put much stock in that comment.  There are a number of reasons Stanford might not have been interested in recruiting her, and when a player discovers that Stanford is not interested, it is a lot easier to manufacture a reason that the player is not interested in Stanford.  Normally that happens when it becomes clear that a player can't make it in academically, but it could be for other reasons too, given that Naje sounds like a very good student.  The only thing that we can say for certain is that there was not a meeting of minds between Naje and Stanford about having her play at Stanford.

The comment itself is wildly inaccurate if you look at our Notre Dame game, but I supposed it would seem all too accurate if you look at our first loss to ASU or the loss to UCLA.  But the triangle is gone, so I'm not sure what she might have been talking about.

In the linked article she also says that "I put San Diego State No. 1 and everyone else who has offered me is tied for second right now."

Last year Stanford averaged 68.8 ppg (#87 among NCAA teams) and San Diego State averaged 58.1 ppg (#291 among NCAA teams).

It's also interesting that DiJonai Carrington last year stated that she wanted to play for a team "that runs and guns and pushes the ball to get fast-break points. I don't want a team that says: 'That's our goal.' I want one that is successful at that style." And she ultimately chose us.

Anyway, without any recent commitment news, just trying to fill the void a little

San Diego St her #1... - FrankO - 08-12-2016

clear difference in academics ... as well as hoops

if she does have the academics, my guess is she simply wasn't offered

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - DC 86 - 08-12-2016

According to HoopGurlz she is rated as a 3-star recruit, and she is coming is coming off a serious ACL injury, safe to say she is probably not being recruited by elite schools. If she hadn't been injured perhaps things would be different.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - 81alum - 09-15-2016

Many thanks to Bob who pointed out to me a couple of public tweets that show Horvat going to UCLA and Te'A Adams to San Diego State.  Neither had been mentioning Stanford lately so those are not unexpected--they showed early interest and backed off, which is probably an admissions issue or maybe they were interested in us and we weren't interested in them.

I can't find any recent press stories on the remaining four we have been watching, but there would normally be some news around this time of year.  Contact period is September 9-29, and in past years most of the WBB recruits show up for a visit on one of those weekends, sometimes at a big home football game.  The problem is that we do not have a big home football game with the students back during that time frame--students are not back for U SC.  In any case, hopefully we will learn more soon, I hope.  We also have reason to believe there is at least one prospect that is high on Tara's list that the Cardboard has not yet guessed and who therefore is not on our list below.  That has been the case for several years running, and is becoming more likely with more international players entering the mix than ever before.  They are a lot harder to track.

Kiana Williams, 5'7" pg, ESPN #8
Maya Dodsen, 6'3" wing, ESPN #11
Estella Moschkau, 6'2" wing, ESPN #44
Deja Church, 5'10" wing, Prospects #58

*updated Sept 15*

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - TheFarm07 - 09-15-2016

I was just going to update this thread, considering it's mid-September and there has been no commits for the Class of 2017. ESPN Hoopgurlz has just updated their player rankings and Kiana has jumped to #8 and Dodson to #11, it would be great if we can land both of them, which would make Kiana our first top 10 recruit (according to Hoopgurlz) since Chiney 7 years ago (McCall was just outside at #11).

And it's just not us, only one of the top 13 recruits has committed, seems like by this time in the year, there would be a flurry of announcements.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - BobK - 09-15-2016

Moschkau now 44.  Still in it for 5.  Await the official visits and we see who comes.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - 81alum - 09-15-2016

Last I can tell, Dodson is being recruited by Notre Dame, Tennessee, and us.  She also seems to have a connection to Nadia Fingall--they tweet each other.

The last Kiana Williams article I can find was from July where she seemed highly positive toward us.

Deja Church sounds like she will come if she gets in from the last public interview I read.  She indicated she wanted to make her decision at the beginning of her senior year....so I'm hoping we will hear something soon.

I can't find very recent info on Estella Moschkau.  The Colorado boards indicate they are still recruiting her, but so are a dozen other teams.

You know, the fact that there have been no announcements at all make me suspect that this is a coordinated strategy--it is so out of character to go this late without a word.  I wonder if we will have 5 recruits announcing on the same day while visiting, or something like that.

If we got all four we have been speculating about, and maybe even a player who is off the radar, then we would have one of the best classes in years, to go with last year's superb class.  And quite balanced, too.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - BobK - 09-22-2016

Church committed to Minnesota just now.

This year we have 5 openings.  Next year we have 2.

Do you think Tara will try to fill all 5 or maybe 4 and a walk-on, so she'll have more options for next year?

ESPN Hoopgurlz has 3 players interested in us (only one 5-star so far, Lexie Hull, #17 in the overall rankings) for the Class of 2018.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - BobK - 09-22-2016

Out list for 2018 is pretty big at this point.

Great find on Hull.  She is a twin btw.

Harris and Brown also

We have 13 on the team this year so could add a walk on now.
We shall know in a month

Perhaps it is disappointing, perhaps not.  It might just mean that we here at the Cardboard didn't do a good job of predicting who the top recruits are, and Tara has more highly rated prospects on the way.  Or maybe Tara decided that holding an extra scholarship for next year would do more for the program.  It is impossible for us to know.  If Church were a more highly rated prospect it would be a different matter, but it is possible that she was on Tara's bubble.

Nevertheless, the Cardboard now is down to only three plausible prospects that we have discussed:

Kiana Williams, 5'7" pg, ESPN #8
Maya Dodsen, 6'3" wing, ESPN #11
Estella Moschkau, 6'2" wing, ESPN #44

If we got all three it would still be a stellar class.  So hope springs eternal.  Dodsen is/has visiting Tennessee.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - BobK - 09-22-2016

Dodson visited Tenn.    I just can't mention the 4th possible remaining but 4 are to my knowledge.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - BobK - 09-23-2016

Williams will visit next weekend.  Hopefully joined by others

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - 81alum - 09-28-2016

I found this article on Williams:
http://blog.mysanantonio.com/hssports/2016/09/girls-basketball-wagner-guard-williams-narrows-college-choices-to-three/
She has visited Oregon State, Baylor, and will visit us.  Those are the three.

And this on Estella Moschkau
http://www.oldgoldfreepress.com/columnist/Bob_Richards/columns/674.shtml
She is down to Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and Stanford, and has visited Wisconsin.

Can't find anything on Dodsen.
