This is a lot to live up to.  I hope he can do it.  I saw Barry break ankles two years ago . . . Once.  I saw Kodi make the most amazing catch . . . Now he's a safety.  If everyone stays healthy and plays to their potential (tall order, I know) we could have a very special season.

ESPN analyst Ed Cunningham chooses Stanford as his most underrated CFB team coming into the season.. and also his sleeper pick for a CFB playoff spot.

Why? Strong OLine, 5th yr QB, Pac12 North wide open.  He thinks if we enter the Pac12 Champ with 1 loss and beat a USC, we're in.

You may have all seen this already, but just to add to the appropriate thread, from today's Daily:

Here's what the UWdawgpound says about Stanford 2015:

I rather like this one.

He says a lot of things about Stanford that I would like our opponents to say.
More importantly, I think he gets the spirit of things roughly right despite a rather inordinate number of mistakes.

Well, they did rightwrite [how embarrassing] that we boasted Joshua Garnett as one of our starting tackles.

Autocorrect got you down?

Maybe the original author was suffering from a basic-fact-auto-correct. [Didn't we have a thread awhile back about computers being used to write basic sports stories for newspapers?]

NFL.com ranks teams by NFL talent:

#6 SC
#11 Stanford
#16 Oregon
#19 UCLA

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000506996/article/pipeline-to-pros-top-25-cfb-teams-with-most-nfl-talent-in-2015

Hasn't ranked 1-5 yet...going to guess our Indianan friends will be on that.

Two things surprised me there:
1. Stanford was listed substantially ahead of UCLA.
2. None of our TEs were listed under "players to watch"

-------------------------------------------
In other preview news ...
Our friend Mr. Wilner has an article claiming that the coaches on the three Bay Area division 1 football teams are all on the hot seat this season. He notes that Shaw isn't likely to lose his job, but does state that, "Another five-loss season, and the skeptics will be out in force."

Is that true?
Basically, the answer seems to be yes.

But the disappointing 8-5 season of 2014 is clearly on the high side of Stanford history over the past 35 years (chosen to roughly match my history of Stanford fandom - of course your time frame will vary).
Over the past 35 years Stanford has had five bowl wins - including the one last year.
Over the past 35 years Stanford has had twelve 8+ win seasons - with four of those Shaw's four years as HC.
In forever, I think there have only been 15 seasons with more than 8 wins.

If Shaw stays at Stanford for awhile and 8-5 is around the lower ebb of his seasons, that would be shockingly good.

And here's the one from our local SF Comical:

Having such a green defensive backfield in the pass-happy Pac-12 doesn't bode well.

"Shaw is unlikely to lose his job if he goes 8-5 again." - JohnR34231 - 08-09-2015

I'd say that is probably a pretty safe statement.

Once again I marvel at how the expectations have changed for Stanford football.

In 1978 Bill Walsh finished 8-4 and Stanford fans prayed he would stay around (he of course didn't, as every NFL team was after him).

In 2014 David Shaw went 8-5 and people are suggesting he better not do it again or he will be in real trouble.

I think we should pass the link about grammar and writing improvement to the guys at Rivals.  ::)

One of numerous examples:

"A possible wild card entry into the corner (or nickel or dime) competition is true freshman Quenton Meeks, who has drew rave reviews for the skills he displayed during the team's informal summer workouts."

And we don't have a James Lofton.  We might have a Darrin Nelson.  Will Hogan be the next Dils/Benjamin and win the NCAA passing title?

Not everyone is viewing Stanford so highly as we preview the season.

The ESPN Pac-12 blog power poll is being done by Kevin Gemmell this season. He picks Stanford at #7 in the conference. That's basically where Stanford finished last season - and presumably as low as we will see.
