I haven't read through all 21 pages. I am posting to note I support McCaffrey's decision. He is risking his economic livelihood every time he steps on the field. He has proven everything he needs to prove in college football. I see no point in risking a career-ending injury for a meaningless bowl game.

There is no question in my mind that Elway would have played--it was a big topic back then that he had never been to a Bowl game, and that The Play stole his chance after he engineered that FG drive.

Though I do not necessarily disagree, this post makes at least three contestable assumptions.

I appreciate Coach (Larry) Fedora and the staff for helping me make the best decision for my future.

Reading between the lines, it seems Hood might have played if deemed necessary. To me, this is another data point that players (and perhaps coaches) do not see the Sun Bowl as that big of a game.
If I'm not mistaken Hood didn't finish UNC's last game vs NC State.

This has become the thread that wouldn't die.
Anyway, here is a nice cynical look at the whole situation.

Yeah, we could spend another 21 (or 7 or whatever) pages arguing about those assumptions.
Let's not. Anyway, if we do, I think I'm going to pass.
What I won't pass on is wishing all Cardboarders a very Merry Christmas!

Well, who'da thunk there would be 3 very nasty broken legs/ankles in 3 different NFL games yesterday (Lockett-Seahawks, Mariota-Titans, Carr-Raiders)? So maybe there is wisdom (premonition?) in Christian's decision...

In the 300+ messages in this thread, has anyone linked yet to the Sports Illustrated story on McCaffrey from last spring? I re-read it on the airplane yesterday and several passages stood out including the one below.Â
Quote: [McCaffrey's] tone changes, however, when it comes to concussions, about which he claims not to worry. "We know what we sign up for," he says, sitting outside Arbuckle. "I couldn't imagine not playing." He pauses. "I know it's a risk, but life's worth taking risks and doing what you love."Â
It is hard to rationalize this person with the one who is sitting out Friday's game. Maybe since then, football has changed from "something you love" to "my future career which will provide the income to allow me to do what I love."

It would be hard to rationalize if he was just quitting the game. Since he is planning to play many years on Sundays, it's not hard to rationalize at all.
