3,000 strikeouts with a single team -- Walter Johnson, Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton, John Smoltz?
Entire career with one team -- Johnson and Gibson?

Most strikeouts by a pitcher
not in the hall of fame and
not tied to PEDs...Curt Schilling, 3,116 strikeouts, most votes he received was 57.6%.
Top 100 most strikeouts is less than 2,000. Kenny Rogers is #100 with 1,968. Lots of names on that Top 100 list that would never come close to the HoF. Rick Reuschel, #84 at 2,015. Madison Bumgarner, #82 with 3,070. #70, Vida Blue (2,175).#63, Tommy John. #49, Luis Tiant. #39, AJ Burnett.. #34, Jerry Koosman.
Most strikeouts by a pitcher
not in the HoF,
not tied to PEDs and
not a complete jerk...probably Portland's favorite son, Mickey Lolich. When he retired, he held the MLB career record for career strikeouts by a lefty, beating out Warren Spahn. 2,832 strikeouts, 217-191 career record. Mostly Tigers, also Mets and Padres. Only left-hander in history to have three complete game wins in a World Series, and last pitcher with three victories in a world series until Randy Johnson in 2001.
Never had more than 25.5% of the HoF vote. But he's in both the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and the Croatian-American Sports Hall of Fame.
He's one of three pitchers since 1923 who's faced at least 1,500 hitters in a season (1,538). The other two were Wilbur Wood (1973) and Bob Feller (1946).
Neither he nor his batterymate (Bill Freehan, 11x All Star) are in the MLB hall of fame.
Here are the all-time leaders of MLB franchise records by each offensive category arranged by team. Data from
StatMuse.
Cubs Sacrifice Hits (13,028), hits (200,223), extra base hits (56,491), doubles (33,817), total bases (294,697), plate appearances (854,478), runs (102,883), at-bats (764,548), games (22,341)
Yankees OPS (.745), OBP (.339), winning percentage (.
569, Giants are second at .535, Dodgers are third at .532), home runs (17,371, Gi
ants are second at 15,619)
Giants Wins (11,587), Intentional walks (4,020), Hit by pitch (5,696), RBIs (90,274)
Pirates Triples (8,941). Interestingly, they are last in most home runs for the original 16 franchises.
Phillies Strikeouts (105,654), Losses (11,362)
Red Sox Batting Average (.267), most double plays (11,573)
Reds Stolen bases (18,180)
Cardinals Caught stealing (3,620)
Blue Jays Slugging Percentage (.419)
Guardians Sacrifice Flies (3,364)
Dodgers Walks (69,046)
Observations: I would have thought the Dodgers and Cardinals would have led in more than one category. Giants and Red Sox…lead in oddball categories. Phillies, totally expected; same for the Yankees in the opposite direction. And for their franchise’s futility, it amazes me that the Cubs have the records that they do.

Four lefties are indeed Kershaw, Johnson, Sabathia, and Carlton; nice job Bob and Terry
3000 K’s with a single team: Kershaw, Walter Johnson, Bob Gibson, Carlton and John Smoltz; again, nice job Terry
Entire career with one team: Johnson and Gibson (well done Terry!), and, at least so far, Kershaw.
Anyone want to hazard a guess on the pitchers who reached 3000 strikeouts faster than Kershaw?
First strikeout, by the way, was Skip Shumaker, who until recently was the manager of the Marlins.

Randy Johnson is correct; he was the fastest to 3000 strikeouts at 2470 2/3 innings. Ryan was close (5th fastest at 2802 innings). Clemens was not in the top 5.

Another Kershaw Q…
Who fanned the most times against him (30 times)?
And a couple 3,000 strikeouts questions….
Who has come the closest to 3,000 K’s without achieving the milestone? He is no longer an active player.
Among active players who have NOT reached the 3,000 strikeout mark, who has the most strikeouts?
RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 -

I would guess Justin Verlander, as he is the first of the three active players to get to three thousand.

Oops, a quick review of the question reveals a faux pas. I have corrected the error in my post.

Ha, I just read an article on who could be next in the Athletic, so I know the answer but I’ll let someone else take a stab at it in case they know. It’s probably not cheating since I read the article before you asked the question, but still doesn’t feel quite right.
There are only two players within 750 Ks of 3000, which I think goes to show how pitching has changed in the last decade. The article speculates that Kershaw may be the last to 3000 (as the answer to your question is 36 and a shade under 500 strikeouts away and the next closest guy is about to turn 35 and 750 strikeouts away).

Since no one else has taken a bite, Chris Sale has the most strikeouts under 3000 amongst active players. Here’s the aforementioned Athletic article about who, if anyone, might be next.
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6466407/2025/07/02/mlb-clayton-kershaw-strikeouts-pitcher/
Worth noting that both Chris Sale and Garrett Cole are both injured. Cole is out for the year with Tommy John surgery. Sale is on the 60-day DL with a rib fracture.

Nicely done, BC…
Also, the player closest to 3,000 (but retired) is Zach Greinke at 2,979.
And the guy Kershaw struck out the most times is our own Brandon Belt.

Several long-time Giants must have faced Kershaw a lot. Maybe Posey, Belt, or Crawford?

Lolich was mentioned earlier in this thread -- is it him? If not, then maybe Glavine or Greinke?

Terry, I think our most recent posts were made at the same time.

Voting for Carton too. Remember he had that 27-10 record on a bad team that finished 59-97. Lost three games with little run support:

Trivia. This pitcher 20-6 record in two leagues and won the Cy Young. Traded during the season the only Cy Young winner to pitch in two leagues and win the award. Who?
RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 -
BostonCard - 07-06-2025
I don’t know about single seasons, but Randy Johnson between 1999 and 2002 was one of the most dominant stretches by a pitcher. He won the Cy Young all four years, averaged over 350 strikeouts per season, his ERA was under 3 all four seasons, and won 81 games over the span.
