Re: Class of 2018 - BostonCard - 02-09-2018

Well, the recruiting calendar for basketball has an early signing period in November, and we do ok with that.  I think it's possible to make it work, but we will need admissions to make decisions with less data; they will have to look at junior year grades and course schedule and determine whether the student is the kind of student that could make seventh semester grades.  I think we may see some situations like Kezie Okpala's in football where a player is admitted on certain conditions and if they don't meet them will be foreced to sit out the fall.

Quote:"In the fall of my senior year of high school, I was admitted to Stanford under the condition that I maintain certain grades in my courses my senior year," Okpala said in statement statement Friday. "My schedule, which included three advanced placement courses in the spring of my senior year, was demanding and, unfortunately, I dropped below the threshold my spring semester in my advanced placement calculus course. As such, the Stanford Office of Undergraduate Admissions notified me that they would honor the original decision if I agreed to sit out of competition."

Oh, recruiting class of 2018. That's even better. I just posted to the 2019 conversation.

Miezan's football highlights:

Nothing at linebacker, but you can tell he's got good athleticism.

Re: Class of 2018 - JustAnotherFan - 03-18-2018

I love this video of Miezan. https://twitter.com/tyxanders/status/749985206027718656/video/1

Re: Class of 2018 - Hurlburt88 - 03-19-2018

So what does this mean for his—and our—lacrosse future?

Re: Class of 2018 - OutsiderFan - 03-19-2018

The ILB crisis just got a little less crisis-ey. Miezan certainly is an athlete, and not real surprising to see him do pretty much everything on that hudl video.  If Stanford ever needs an emergency Punter, Miezan is good for some 50 yarders in a pinch. Seems to have quick feet, and though not a burner, plenty of speed. Maybe a little bit faster and a little bit smaller version of Kevin Palma?

He's a lacrosse player who has only played football one year.  He flipped from UNC.  Fullback?  LB?

He said,
Quote:One of my favorite memories was my first football game of the season under the lights," Miezan said. "We had gone up by two touchdowns, and our quarterback who is also my roommate, comes up to me and tells me I'm scoring this drive. We drive up the field and are at about the 25. We snap the ball, and I run behind the line, fake the end cap and run out for a pass. He immediately finds me and I get in the end zone, running over the guy in front of me. That was my first touchdown ever and after the crowed started chanting my name, I decided, 'I think I can do this football thing.'

Re: Class of 2018 - terry - 03-19-2018

Will Miezan be on scholarship?

I think ILB.  We certainly need him there.  I don't think we have a Div I Lacrosse team, so I don't think he came intending to play two sports.

Terry, I think he was recruited for a scholarship position, but I'm not sure.

Re: Class of 2018 - Stymie - 03-19-2018

Anybody else out there remember the greatest football/lacrosse player of all time.  If Ricky even comes close to that legend, we are blessed........

Re: Class of 2018 - OutsiderFan - 03-19-2018

Hard to imagine the #1 player in any scholarship sport coming to play another sport as a walk-on. It's certainly possible, but those odds seem quite long.  My guess is Miezan is added to Stanford's 2018 class on the recruiting services.

While I don't personally remember him, Jim Thorpe would be a contender as well.  This article on the top 10 lacrosse players of all time ranks Thorpe at #9 and Brown at #3: https://laxallstars.com/top-10-lacrosse-legends-men-who-played-the-game/

Hmm. Is this - top 10 Lacrosse players being good at football also - coincidence/meaningless, or statistically significant? If Miezan is the #1 player in the country, he'd certainly seem to be in the ballpark of more likely to be good than not, at football, yes?

Re: Class of 2018 - BigEasyCard - 03-19-2018

OF, I thought of Jim Thorpe as an athlete who might have excelled in both sports.  A quick Google query found the linked article on lacrosse greats which was just one man's opinion, but certainly better than my own.  I'm not familiar with any football excellence on the part of any of the other eight lacrosse greats on the list.

As for Miezan, we'll enjoy seeing how he develops on the Farm.

If nothing else, it speaks to his athleticism, quickness, conditioning, and willingness to deck people (watch his lax highlights good lord). He has the size at 6'3" 235, and he's only been playing football for a year. SCREAMS upside.
