Re: Class of 2018 - Stymie - 03-19-2018

At his strength, size and athleticism, he could be the player who could bring back the running fullback to the game, just as Jonah Lomu did for world-class rugby.

That is what I was thinking.  He could be a blocking beast at FB.  And, he should have the speed and agility to carry the rock.

Re: Class of 2018 - OutsiderFan - 03-20-2018

Thought Symonds was the Fullback in the 2018 signing class.

With this guy being a late get, I would imagine they will use him where he can help the most.  Based on his size and lacrrosse prowess, I could see him at LB or FB.  Or, both.  ;)

ILB.

Re: Class of 2018 - Langdude - 03-20-2018

Look like in HS he only lined up on D at OLB as a pass rusher. Or at least that is what his highlights show. But it is fairly evident that our needs are inside. He could play at a number of different spots given his size, strength, speed, and athleticism. Wow.

Re: Class of 2018 - OutsiderFan - 03-20-2018

He played ILB on his hudl video.  Will be fascinating to see how he develops.

If only Dax Hollifield didn't have a girlfriend...  Stanford would have had two ILBs from North Carolina and JMF. Nobody would be hyperventilating about ILB depth.

Re: Class of 2018 - BostonCard - 03-20-2018

While the ILB pipeline is not quite as dire as it was before, it is still problematic, especially in 2019, when Miezan will  be a redshirt freshman with all of two years of football experience (one year playing).

I'm excited about his athleticism and his potential to contribute.  But I think we still have an ILB pipeline problem.

Still a big one, for sure. In 2019 you’ll presumably have Barton, Mangum-Farrar, Miezan, plus any true freshmen. That’s not really a formula for an average ILB unit.

Pryts, too. Which sort of emphasizes your point.

Why assume Pryts is deficient?  Has anyone seen him in Spring?  It's not at all uncommon for Safeties to become Linebackers and do well.  Pryts was a 4-star recruit.  I wouldn't discount him so much until he proves he is incapable of doing the ILB job at a high level.

see the Stanford Football video on Facebook on Ricky Miezan

That final run looked very Jim Brownish....

Maybe he'll be great. I dunno. But he wasn't good enough to play more than one game this past year. But, even if he is serviceable, unless either true frosh plays in 2018, which is looking more likely, our ONLY ILBs with experience in 2019 will be Barton and Pryts. It's not so much that I am down on him, but the fact that we are absolutely needing him to be quality ... or else we're sunk.

In fact, given that we regularly use 4 ILBs, this year either he or a true frosh or Branch is going to have to produce.

Re: Class of 2018 - Snorlax94 - 03-21-2018

Exciting! I was skeptical at first because there is so much to learn, and then I watched his HUdl video and I was like wow! Maybe! I can’t remember the last time I saw such an excitng nontraditional prospect in football.

He seems closer to contributing as a fb — he can run, he can hit, and he can catch. He seemed greener on defense, and he stood up quickly and over-pursued at times, and frequently arm tackled, and the offenses in the pac 12 will be a beast to prepare for, even more so with Chip Kelly back.

Plus, as a fullback, he offers the punt threat. Imagine it’s fourth and short on the 50, and Stanford sends in the ogres and two running backs including Miezan. Is it a run or a punt? Do you stack the line or do you need to commit a safety deep so you don’t get pinned inside the 5? As a special circumstances player, if he can get more fb basics quickly, it might even make it worth burning his redshirt for the midfield, fourth-and-short Miezan package.

Re: Class of 2018 - Durty Nelly - 03-21-2018

No!!!  Put him at ILB and leave him there to learn the position and grow.  Mixing and matching with where will he will play and special packages is a recipe for failure.  Stanford does not have a great recent history of changing a players position.

Re: Class of 2018 - Snorlax94 - 03-21-2018

What about Owen Marecic?

Re: Class of 2018 - washingtonismoney - 03-21-2018

It's a pretty easy case. Stanford has plenty of fullbacks and they're easy to come by. Stanford has almost no ILBs, so Miezan's an ILB. There's nearly bupkis there; it's a red-alert problem.

I don't think this is really true, in the Harbaugh/Shaw era there have been a number of position switches that have worked out well: Owen Marecic, Erik Lorig, Richard Sherman, Ryan Hewitt, Dallas Lloyd, Kodi Whitfield, Eric Cotton.

Sometimes an unproductive player is switched positions as a desperation move, but when good players are moved due to need, or due to being blocked, those position changes have a good track record.

See Luke "TE, no, DE, no, OLB, no, DE again" Kaumatule.

I'm still super salty about it because I know the guy and lived with him for 2 years. The killer was the OLB switch while he was redshirted... Why? We were thin on the DL and he could've developed further there! WHY?!
