Pretty sure Johnny Bench hit 45 in 1972. I don't know Berra's high-water mark.

Not sure how many Josh Gibson hit or could have hit. Buck Weaver used to say that he could tell by the sound of bat hitting the ball that the batter was either Josh Gibson or Babe Ruth...they were the only two hitters who ever made that sound.

Bench had the record for many years, but it has since been broken.

I looked it up. I didn't know his name, and he only had that one great year (and a long string of really good years).

I was going to answer Piazza until a friend texted me the answer. But I’m unclear on the answer. HRs while a catcher or that was his normal position. lol

Javy Lopez?

I had to look as well since it wasn’t Bench.  He had one AB that I’ll never forget….

Fair point.  I think it counts because 33 out of his 48 home runs were hit while he was playing catcher, though that also means that 15 of them were hit as a DH.  Still, MLB.com considers Salvador Perez the single season record holder for home runs by a catcher.

https://www.mlb.com/news/most-home-runs-by-a-catcher

Worth noting that even Bench did not hit all of his home runs as a catcher (he 38 as a catcher).  If you go for most home runs hit by a player while playing catcher, then the answer is Javy Lopez who hit 42 home runs as a catcher, and 1 as a pinch hitter.  So, partial credit to Terry.

Thanks. Great trivia question

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Giants - 07-28-2025

Bumgarner knew Perez was susceptible to high cheese.  The popup to Sandoval was a high strike that he did not hit squarely.  Game and Series in one swing of the bat…..

What two things do the following four players have in common?

Ryan Johnson, Nolan Schanuel, Zach Neto and Chase Silseth.

When was the last time the Giants lost all six games of their homestand?

FYI, since this is a bit obscure: all four were drafted by the Angels, and each one of them was the first player from their draft class to make it to the Big Leagues.  Probably says more about the Angels talent than it does their draft skills.

1896. I know all or just read it and figured no one would get this

Only one team in MLB history satisfies all three of these conditions:

1. Won at least 90 games.
2. Won the league or their division.
3. The most games won by a starting pitcher was 13 or fewer.

Which team and year?

Sounds like the Tampa Rays.  Year?  Early 2010’s?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Giants - 08-05-2025

Tonight, Logan Webb became the 10th SF Giant to reach the 1,000 IP plateau.

Who are the other nine?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 08-05-2025

From recent history: Bumgarner, Lincecum, and Cain.

I haven’t been in the area long enough to know the old timers, but I would have to believe that Marichal would be on it.
