Re: Will it be Iowa or Ohio State? - TheFarm07 - 12-07-2015

It's been disappointing the last few weeks...losing to Oregon...playing Iowa instead of Ohio State...probably McCaffrey losing the Voldemort on Saturday, but the Rose Bowl is still the Rose Bowl and the team should not lose sight of that honor and opportunity.

There are probably 100 other college football teams that would like to be in our spot right now, including all 11 of our Pac-12 rivals.

It is what it is and we should make the best of our next challenge: dominating Iowa and winning the Rose Bowl!  Go Cardinal! Fear the Tree!

Hmmm...  during the last three weeks we have beaten K.al, a Top 10-ranked N.otre D.ame, and U.SC; won the Pac-12 Championship; secured out third trip to the Rose Bowl in four years; and, had a guy go from kind of being mentioned as maybe a Voldemort long-shot to one of three finalists heading to New York.

"Disappointing " is not exactly the first word that comes to my mind.  "It is what it is..."?  Seems to me, "what it is" is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!  But, maybe that's just me...

Re: Will it be Iowa or Ohio State? - doubledub - 12-07-2015

The kids (emphasis on kids) are human, they are allowed to prefer one opponent over another just like most of us fans do/did at some point in time.  That doesn't mean they don't want to go to the Rose Bowl or don't want to win...I would say it is more akin to what others have said, i.e. it would be awesome to play and beat Ohio State, show their mettle against a bunch of future NFLers (who among us didn't want to see our O-Line take on Joey Bosa?) but in no way would the players slack off and risk losing to an Iowa team.  They all hate to lose, but would take more pride in beating OhState than Iowa.

Also, these players have a different set of expectations nowadays given that winning has become more of an expectation than a hope.  They don't give a damn that 100 other teams would love to be in our position.  For them, the Rose Bowl is awesome, but they all had their expectations at the CFP level and the Rose Bowl is a consolation prize.

Frankly, I like that attitude - never be satisfied, not even with a Rose Bowl.

And on top of that, we have the 3rd rated recruiting class per rivals now. Oh, the doom and gloom! When will this end?

I was referring to more along these points, not the 3 game winning streak of beating C.al, N.D. and US.C, those are obviously great accomplishments and shouldn't be minimized, but just the level of expectations of what almost could have been and how close we were to the college playoffs.

My point was more along the level of expectations given our talent and potential that we were so close to making the four-team field, not to disparage the tremendous victories or great season we had, or the future of the program, but to reiterate the frustration some of us on this forum has expressed or are expressing over the lack of consideration in considering SoS in picking playoff teams (i.e. Oklahoma) or the probable East Coast/SEC bias of picking the Voldemort winner over our own incredibly awesome player who totally deserves the award.

Re: Will it be Iowa or Ohio State? - DC - 12-08-2015

Iowa was closer to being in the CFP than us, and I'll bet they are going to provide max effort to win the Rose Bowl.

Meh, but you can't ever expect to make the playoffs. Here's the number of teams that can reasonably expect to make the playoffs in any given year: {}

The math is simply too unforgiving. Let go of attachment and expectation. It's more fun that way!

Because sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.  Nebraska's Tommy Armstrong threw 4 interceptions, and Beathard threw none.  Iowa did lose one fumble, but winning the turnover battle 4-1 is a heck of a way to overcome a dud of a game from Beathard (9/16 for 97 yards).  Jordan Canzeri getting 140 yards and two TDs on 8.2 yards per carry doesn't hurt, though breaking a 68-yard run helps that average.

Iowa punted nine times in that game.  Nine times!  I'm going to go ahead and predict that if Iowa punts nine times against Stanford, they're not pulling off the win.

If Iowa punts nine times against us they're going to lose by at least 30. That would be a woeful performance and our offense is too good to get the ball off a punt every time.

"Let go of attachment and expectation. It's more fun that way!"

This is a very true statement in general.  Not only could we dedicate an entire thread to this principle, we could probably start a separate board.  :)

And WRT that Iowa/Nebraska game, I watched with my cousin who's a Hawkeye alum (med school), and I just had to add that 4 turnovers does not nearly capture how bad a game the Nebraska QB had.  I don't know the young man, so maybe it was just a bad day, but the vast majority of his throws were embarrassingly inaccurate.  I really mean embarrassing.

Gifting Iowa a birth in the Rose Bowl was the committee's way of giving Kirk Ferentz a lifetime achievement award.  Could Iowa beat Ohio State? Of course.  Which team is better? Ohio State.  So why would Iowa be ranked ahead of Ohio State? Because the committee is composed of a bunch of people who respect what Kirk Ferentz has done in 15 years at Iowa, and this year, and feels like he should be rewarded.

I was at the end of the year banquet for the football team when Iowa was announced as the opponent...I couldn't say people were happy.  In fact, I would say that the excitement was sucked out of the room.

The player I was seated next too said he had no clue about Iowa and was clearly disappointed that he would not have the chance to prove himself against the players of Ohio State.  The player on the opposite side of the table felt the same.

This is not good.  Bowl games are often decided by which team wants to be there to play a given opponent more.  Then again, Iowa may be just as non-plussed to play Stanford, having just missed the playoff, when they controlled their destiny.

Don't know who those players were, but I'd be willing to bet large amounts of $$$ that none of them was Kevin Hogan.  Assuming these guys aren't just making up all of the things they say about Hogan as a leader, etc., we should be okay.  I can't imagine there is anyone on either team who personally would want to win this Rose Bowl -- regardless of the opponent -- more than Hogan, and I assume that feeling will be effectively communicated as necessary.  If his 36th [37th?] career victory is his SECOND Rose Bowl win, the "yeah, but..." phrase should be gone forever.

I would think that the fact that Iowa beat Northwestern by 30 would get Stanford's players' attention.

Re: Will it be Iowa or Ohio State? - thunder_chik - 12-08-2015

Rose Bowl will be a battle of the "shouldas":
-Iowa shoulda handled business and beaten Michigan State - they'd probably be in the semifinals if they had.
-We shoulda handled business and beaten Oregon - we'd probably be in the semifinals if we had.
I would love for us to beat the 'Birds in a blowout; it would be cathartic since we will have missed the playoffs and been snubbed for the Voldemort yet again.

True, but our loss to Northwestern seems like it was so long ago that I wasn't sure if any players now on the team were actually alive back then...  ;D

Re: Will it be Iowa or Ohio State? - teejers1 - 12-08-2015

I categorically reject the notion of the Rose Bowl as a "consolation prize" and further believe that IF the players view it that way then it bodes poorly for Stanford's chances against Iowa.

I want Stanford to win and win decisively, if possible.  That's not going to happen if the team thinks they are playing in a consolation game.

Precisely so, teejers.  If they actually felt that way, deep down inside, it would slightly diminish my sense of their character.  I understand the impulse to be disappointed, having fought hard for the playoff and having failed to achieve that goal.  But I seriously doubt that this team, these players, will line up for the kick-off of the Rose Bowl with anything other than a burning desire to transform it into C-House!!!!

Colin Cowherd's mocking of the Hawkeyes is making me nervous. From an Iowa perspective, Cowherd must be seen as a West Coast guy, which I suppose he is.
