You must have a reading comprehension issue. ... Being upset by that show means you were either going to be upset about anything LSJUMB did, or you're a buffoon.
Ah, I see.
Have you talked to someone who actually explained why they were offended (were you offended? Can you explain why?)? So far internet comments just say "classless" and "farmers feed America" and "we raise pigs not cattle", none of which explain anything to me. Particularly since I think the cow represented Northern California. I think.

No, and I don't particularly care. I don't think it was a very big deal either, but clearly some folks did, and I hardly think insulting them over a mere difference of opinion is warranted. That's all.

Want more? The LSJUMB field shows are up on youtube now (I think from the band's camera on the pressbox, so audio isn't wonderful but it's mostly intelligible).

edit: Now that I've actually seen the pregame show, it's pretty funny too. I'm PRETTY sure it's making fun of political correctness. I guess not politically correctly enough?

Thou shalt not offend anyone over anything at any time. I apologize if the King James Version of biblical writing is offensive. It is unintentional. And I apologize if my apology offended anyone who felt no apology was necessary. And I apologize for leaving the toilet seat up in that unisex bathroom in 1997. Inexcusable.

Maybe they weren't offended by the script per se, but the five minutes of their lives that were stolen watching that hot mess.
Oh ;) so no one here is offended by anyone taking offense to those taking offense to the offended.

Thanks for posting these! I missed them in real-time, so it is much appreciated. Now that I've seen them, I'm convinced that the boos were not based on anything they'd actually comprehended, but rather assumed, or were venting about the game. As far as scripts go, I don't think I've ever seen anything this benign, as someone else pointed out. Haters gonna hate though. It's all good.

@Qrocks Agreed! They went too far. We tend to keep them on a long leash, but definitely need to tighten it from here on out.

I'm sure the Alumni Association has no authority on this matter, but what are they doing tweeting such a response? I suppose they are just trying to placate the offended masses, but if sticking to an approved, benign script, is going too far...

I've found that people looking to be offended....will be.

However, in my experience that group is a subset of the total group of offended people.

So, let's see. The band runs the script -- and every script -- by the athletic department. In this case, it was also run by the Rose Bowl and the Iowa athletic department, and the LSJUMB is the bad guy?

Proposed LSJUMB show so as not to cause offense:
"Boy, Iowa sure is flat" Formation: straight line. Song: "Sultans of Swing" by the Dire Straights
"As flat as a pancake" Formation: another straight line. Song: "Straight to Hell" by The Clash
"It's so flat that you can see forever" Formation: a straight line, but turned around this time (for variety). Song: "I Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash.
----
And yet someone from Iowa would find reason to be offended.

Didn't the Iowa fans greet the Stanford team with the same level of booing when they took the field? I guess that's a cheap comment though.

That's true. I've also found that people looking to offend often do.
I'll hand it to the band. They presented a show that is totally banal (and even slightly clever if you read it enough times) on paper -- one Terry could defend in court -- and managed to have Bret Musburger remark: 'oh that Stanford band had the Iowa fans boo them off the field; which is exactly what they wanted.'Â There is no doubt about that reading the band's post-show tweets. ('Were the Iowa fans booing or mooing?' #sosorry #retireinaday, etc.)
Watching LSJUMB is a little like being the one sober person in a room with a wet towel under the door, open bags of Doritos all over the floor and god awful speed metal playing really loud. Everyone is laughing at their own stoner gibberish, you can't figure out what is so funny and all you want to do is leave the room. If the band wants its audience to leave the room, mission accomplished I suppose.
Rule number one in entertainment is know your audience. Rule number two is the audience is always right. Is it the band's fault the audience didn't 'get it?' Yeah, probably.
Quote:Stanford's halftime show jab seemed to make fun of Iowa in that respect, as can be seen here with this sad farm hand who gets to meet up with a cow.
Quote:I guess this is Stanford dissing farmers? Maybe? Hard to tell.
The band knows exactly what it's doing and does it well. Whether that's good or bad is subject for debate. Here's a pretty good one with perspective from both sides.

Frankly I think you could replace them (the band) with a hundred randomly selected Rhesus monkeys, give those monkeys drum sticks and a few brass instruments, and there would be no noticeable degradation of musical quality or formation skills. It would certainly amp up the entertainment value.

Iowa fans weren't the audience; they were unwitting participants in the show.

Who are you quoting?
[As far as I can tell the second quote sums the situation up fairly well. It's always hard to tell what the band is doing - other than being weird - and due to the weirdness and reputation many folks choose to fill in the missing info by assuming they are being dissed.]

Good point BC.
I'll just leave it at the LSJUMB has the right to offend intentionally or otherwise; and Iowa (and other) fans have the right to be offended.
I did think it was funny that one of the complaints in this thread was that Iowa played stupid music from the '70s like Queen. Of course Stanford opened its pregame show with Parliament. No way I'm calling that 'stupid music from the '70s,' but I thought the comment was unintentionally pretty funny. If that was sarcasm, however, well done!
P.S. I think LSJUMB jumped its shark for me personally at the 2000 Rose Bowl. We sat in the cheap seat/mixed crowd area down low in one end zone. I was next to some people from Madison and we had a great time before the game once they found out my sister was living on State Street at the time. They asked me what I thought the band would do. 'I don't know....28 years since the last Rose Bowl, Y2K on top of that, how has the new millennium turned out for everyone, where are the flying cars, possibilities are pretty endless. Who's kidding whom? They'll probably do something stupid about cheese and fat Wisconsinites....' Har, har, har. Hey, they didn't disappoint.
