Exactly. I do think it's a bit funny that Charlie Strong, when he came, was greeted by a booster saying he'd make a good defensive coordinator hire. Herman's treated like the messiah. During his head coaching tenure, Herman's had some really nice wins -- but also, seemingly, a record for blowing games where they're big favorites. Things might get better at Texas...but they might not. Shaw looks like a much more certain commodity.

I don't know how you can look at this season at Houston and think he's a sure thing. Sure, beating OU and Louisville is nice, but their losses were baaaaaaad. And it's not like Houston is some talentless team, either, that always overperformed.

Also, Texas's culture could work against it. Would Petersen have been fired before this season at Texas?

It would be astounding to me if we lost 2 admittable 5-star recruits where we are in the top 2 schools being considered at a position of need and given our style of offense and our record of successful NFL OL's...

I would say there are two reasons Herman isn't just Charlie Strong II.

First, he has yet to fail at Texas. So, now all is optimistic fantasy.

Secondly, he is white - which perhaps is related to the good coordinator comment above, and at any rate there have been some rumors that has been an issue.

And Shaw is definitely a much more certain quantity. Was he involved in the Texas search?

This is what I'm thinking. Geography is obviously a concern -- some kids and families just want an extension of high school and still want to be able to be at every game -- but at a certain point you'd think someone would realize what an amazing opportunity Stanford offers. Washington and Texas are both good schools that compare favorably to almost every other top 25 football program, but I think everyone knows that neither school's degree will open the doors that Stanford's will. On top of that, neither school has produced the quantity and quality of offensive linemen that Stanford has over the past decade. I've gotta believe this is going to work out.

It's a bit of a bromide, but hopefully as Walker goes up to the podium today he remembers the saying "Anyone smart enough to earn a scholarship to Stanford shouldn't be dumb enough to turn it down".

That's a completely irresponsible post.

This board will go out of its way to chase off users with silly political rules (not to mention the moronic auto corrects).

Maybe I just need to be more in touch with the rumors so I wouldn't be so offended.

Uh, really? I don't care about Texas at all I was hearing rumors immediately that some people were mad that Strong was black. Like right after the hire. Pretty much every reddit thread about his short leash mentioned this.

If I read that your mother was a whore on reddit, I probably wouldn't post about it on this high tone bulletin board of ours.

You think it was a responsible to post racially charged, anonymously sourced stuff like this?
