Agree. No malice towards Dawkins, who by all accounts was a legitimately good guy. That carries a lot of weight, but not enough to overcome 7 seasons of mediocrity punctuated by one great week end.

P.S. There is a third way that a Cinderella can win in the NCAA tournament; when the opponent suffers a devastating injury (or two). Just ask the Harvard women's basketball team.

Very much hope Muir doesn't overlook 16 years of mediocrity in favor of one special game with the Yale coach. Upsets are fun but they don't indicate great coaching; Yale's Jones has a pretty meh record.

I just figured that No. 6 was the award for which Toby, Andrew and Christian received second place. Although I have no idea what that has to do with Johnny Dawkins, or why we are still talking about him.
And I'm not quoting the Bruces sketch, although I do believe that The Philosophers Song is still OK.

Thanks jacketree for sharing the Johnny D hotdog story; it's a good one. By all accounts he was a great guy (gathering from all the comments on this board as well as beyond). It just didn't work out and I, too, wish him well. No kicking the guy from this end.

I blame Bumbling Bob for the Dawkins/USA basketball/recruiting situation. I have no doubt that Dawkins made it clear to Bumbling Bob that he would not actually be in the job until after his prior commitment to USA basketball was fulfilled. Frankly, if Dawkins had said anything different I wouldn't have hired him, and I actually respect him for doing it.
If Bumbling Bob had been on the ball (no pun intended) he would have had a short list at the ready and had the position filled within a week or two with someone who would be on campus working on recruiting the day his hiring was announced. Bumbling Bob admitted that he didn't expect Johnson to leave (bumble #1) and had no plan B (bumble #2). You should never assume and you should always have a contingency plan.

You can call him "Bumbling Basketball Bob" as I agree that transition was suboptimal. I do think he wasn't all that set on Trent and may have had a plan B that fell through. I remember a con call to that effect. Given what Bob did for our football program, I will give him a solid pass. Muir still needs to prove himself in my book and this hire is critical. He waited too long, but at this point, it's a NIT.
So UW was able to hire Petersen away. I really hope we make a strong proposal to Mark Few. He's from the NW and loves the area, but as we all know Stanford is special and he may be ripe for a new shot at the top tier. Monty and Shaw have shown him the path - it can be done! Either he makes a change now/soon or he stays there until the end.

This suggests that Few is not happy about being in the WCC, but his undiplomatic criticism of other sports isn't going to play well at Stanford. I have heard from some Gonzaga grads that Few likes being a big fish in a small pond...
