Quote:Shaw’s 20-9 record (.690) against ranked teams is the fifth-best winning percentage by a head coach in the poll era (minimum 25 games). The Cardinal were 5-0 last season against AP-ranked teams, the best record by any team in the FBS.

Anybody recognize who the player is in this drill appearing between Phillips and Watkins?...

I'll go out on a limb and say it's Branch.

Bryce Love is ESPN's #44 "breakout player": http://insider.espn.com/blog/pac12/insider/post?id=102236

Nothing terribly revelatory in the piece itself.

David Shaw Q&A: https://twitter.com/StanfordFB/status/765278578028060672

Shout outs to Alfieri, S. Thomas, and Phillips.

Calls Costello "prototype."

Also saying he "leans towards" rotating QBs against K-State, which is a small escalation from previous comments.

Second digit looks like a 1 to me, perhaps a 4.  My eyes aren't great though.

What does it mean to be "chipped" in the way he described?

Ok if the # ends in a 1 or a 4 it's most likely Branch, Kalambayi or my guess is Jovann Swann (51) as he belongs to the same position group as the others in the short video clip.

[/quote]

A chip is a block usually executed by a RB or TE in the course of running a pattern; instead of fully engaging and trying to pancake the opponent, the RB/TE tries to knock the defender off balance before proceeding with his pattern. Sometimes the chipper contacts a defender who is already engaged with a lineman, which may result in a dangerous chop block, although that wasn't the case on the play that hurt Phillips.

First digit looks like a 2 or 3 to me, and the second is almost definitely a 1. I'm going with Branch (definitely smaller than a DL).

I hope he leans away in the next 10 days or so.  With 3 new OL starters I think you have to make a decision quickly.  QBs are NOT interchangeable even if they play similarly.  Those are two different people the unit is looking to for leadership.  When you have two leaders you have none.

Re: Training camp thread - OutsiderFan - 08-17-2016

From what I gather this could be one of the closest QB competitions I've ever followed. And as for the leadership issue, I don't think there is any doubt CMac will play that role.  The OL has to play together regardless of who the QB is, and it seems fair to say Caspers is the leader there.

I say relax.  It will all work itself out.

I hope it does, because I really don't expect Shaw to do what winflop wants him to.
