It might be an exhibition game to CM, but it might be a lot more important to the guys who have been blocking for him every game, who might not have a chance to go pro, who were losing out on other parts of their college experience to play in a TEAM game, including a decent bowl game against a reputable opponent.
And I suspect there are some guys on NC who wanted to play Stanford at its best, and now are in a no win game where if they win its devalued and if they lose its that much worse.
And as mentioned, there were a lot of fans who bought tickets to go to a game that is now a lot less interesting. The same fans who make it possible for players to make big bucks playing a game.
And of course the logic is understandable. Unfortunately it could also apply to the Rice game, and every other game we played after we were eliminated from contention from the Pac North title.
And it doesnt exactly help our university's reputation with those who wonder whether the kids who go to Stanford are selfish, me-first types.
There is nothing unique about CM's situation of which I am aware that hasnt faced many other excellent college players. Almost all of them chose to play. He didnt. Yes it's great that he spends time every summer helping disabled kids, but this shows another side of CM. Not a horrible side, but a different one.
I wish him the best, truly, but I cant ignore this choice he made.
End of rant.

If Stanford loses, I think he'll regret not being there. If they win, he'll feel at peace with it.

I'm with 81alum re: maybe there is a physical ailment that CMac was hoping would improve, but just has not healed sufficiently 11 days before the Sun Bowl. I'm trying to withhold judgment, but man am I disappointed.

Wow. The negative response to this has a strong odor of entitlement.
The only people Christian has to explain this to are his teammates. And no one here knows what they think.
As fans, we are owed nothing. That this diminishes Christian in some of your eyes says more about you than it does about him. He was a shooting star at Stanford and we were fortunate; so, so, so very fortunate, to get a glimpse of him and to call him our own for those times.
Thought experiment: would you rather future athletes of Christian's caliber (not saying there will ever be any) NOT come to Stanford, if you knew they would leave prior to a meaningless exhibition game?

"It was the best of times; it was the worst of times..."
Two NCAA championships within six days; no CMAC at the Sun Bowl and WBB tanks it against Tennessee within two days.
If I had to pick two of the four, I'd take the championships and lose CMAC and the WBB game. Keeps our streak alive, puts us in position to win the Capital One Cup, and is more way more important in the long run!
Second, those 2 of 4. No way I trade CMAC in the Sun Bowl for NCAA Team Titles. Would happily "trade" a Sun Bowl win for another NCAA Team Title FWIW. So really, my view of the Sun Bowl's value is apparently right in line with CMAC's. :)

Isn't this the case now with basketball? National top teams are built with one-and-done-rs. So far Stanford has avoided that model (perhaps not by choice).

When have Stanford people ever had a sense of entitlement? When has anyone ever been subjugated by someone with a Stanford degree?

Geez, what are we going to have next, players deciding midway through the season that they want to enter the NFL draft and sitting out the rest of it?
It certainly lends credibility to the notion that college football players are only there to prepare themselves for professional football.
McCaffrey was named CoSIDA's Academic All American of the Year and carries a 3.43 GPA so it's not fair to say that he attended college only to prepare for the NFL; he was dedicated to his studies and to the community throughout his time at Stanford.
Not playing in the bowl game does say something about his commitment to the football team itself but not about his motives for choosing Stanford.
Regarding the comment about quitting mid-season, ×ÉÉ Quantrill could have pitched towards the end of last season but had a draft guarantee from SD and chose not to return and risk injury. Given the millions of dollars at stake I can't blame the man given the circumstances.

I wasn't really talking about Christian personally, (Fournette is doing it too, and I'm sure they won't be the last). I was just talking about the notion that players will be leaving their teams whenever they feel it is financially advantageous to do so, regardless of when that occurs. To me anyway, it just makes college football look like the minor leagues for the NFL and I think that is lamentable.
Also, if the game is as meaningless as some people here seems to think it is, one might wonder why we are bothering to play it in the first place.
I don't know how anyone who has played a team sport could possibly not have a problem with this. He is walking out on his team in the middle of the season. He is team captain nonetheless. Lame! I think he will later in life regret this decision.
+1. Bad move. This isn't an exhibition, it's the most important game of the year. I view it as quitting before the season is over.

Couldn't agree more. Extremely disappointed in him. And I thought the '80s were the "me" generation. Get some insurance if needed, but don't abandon your team. Darrin Nelson would have played. Plunkett would have played. Elway would have played. Gerhart would have played. Luck would have played. Thousands of guys over the years with more heart than fame would have played. And you can bet the Farm that Bryce Love will play, and play his heart out.
Actually the '70s were the "me" generation, coined by Tom Wolfe and others.

Given the nature of the RB position, I completely understand CMac's position. I wish he would play (I was also motivated to attend because he was leaving for the draft), but c'est la vie. The NFL is brutal, and if CMac is forgoing his senior season to maximize his draft position, he might as well do everything else that comes with maximizing his draft position.
Bryce Love stands to benefit the most. Maybe he'll have a complete breakout game like CMac did in the Foster Farms bowl. Time to get onboard the Bryce Love H-man award train...!
