Aren't you being a little disingenuous here? I think you have a pretty good idea that the content you'd like to see exists behind a paywall and somebody appears to be working hard to put it there. Much of that info tends to emerge here and elsewhere, after the upcoming open practice for instance.

The Ca.l Athletic department has put out 8 video interviews on YouTube since its training camp started on the same day as Stanford.  Stanford has put out 0.  All Stanford puts out are hype videos of practice, mostly in slow motion.  No interview.  Haven't even seen anything on Soundcloud.  Not saying they don't exist, but I haven't seen any premium articles either.

Re: Training Camp Thread 2017 - DenverCard - 08-04-2017

Out here in CU Buff country, there is a great deal of day-to-day information about the CU football team available to all.  The university itself employs at least one ex-sports writer they hired away from from the Boulder Daily Camera and he writes a daily update of practice, and usually a feature on a player or unit of the team almost every day.  Since it's the official university site, the stories are pretty saccharine, but still with useful news.

The Daily Camera has a beat writer who puts out one or two stories per day -- at times a bit redundant relative to the CU site, but also some fresh angles.  The beat writer also conducts a weekly Q-and-A online with fans for about an hour or hour-and-a-half.

There's a third source put out by fans/students that includes mostly opinions.

I don't know of a forum like the Cardboard (of course; how could there be?) for CU fans, but the availability of general news about the CU team seems much more accessible than re Stanford.

Yet I just read a great story about yesterdays practice and more.    Reach out Outsider, spend a buck get all the news.

Re: Training Camp Thread 2017 - Durty Nelly - 08-04-2017

From cardreider article.  Do you think he meant Osiris St Brown rather than Ryan Atkins?

"Other freshmen expected to make an impact for the Cardinal this season include offensive linemen Foster Sarell and Walker Little, tight end Colby Parkinson and wide receiver Ryan Atkins."

Re: Training Camp Thread 2017 - OutsiderFan - 08-04-2017

Thanks for the report!

Ryan Atkins is a walk-on WR who doesn't even have a profile on any scouting service.  He does have a huddle video, however: https://www.hudl.com/profile/3037550/ryan-atkins

I hope that development does happen. The more it does, the better off we will be.

(08-04-2017, 05:47 AM)OutsiderFan link Wrote:Anyway, as for the DL, while watching the Spring Game, aside from Harrison Phillips being the best DL, it sure looked like Eric Cotton was doing pretty well for himself.  You'd have to think Dylan Jackson will be improved as a RS Soph, so the starters are probably going to be sound on the DL.

This is good to hear. The more we get from these two guys, the better off we will be. We really do need to see some additional development over last year, where Thomas covered up a lot of mediocrity. If we get nothing, it will be a long year.

Quote:It is imperative that at least 2/3 of Williams, Swann, and Wade-Perry be able to make meaningful contributions for Stanford to be in contention for a Pac-12 championship or more in November.  That would give Stanford 5 DL to rotate, and a solid backup for Phillips.  Given they play a lot of 2 man DL, that should be enough.
I think it would be great if we could get some good minutes out of the three guys you mentioned. I am not sure that it is necessary to us being in the hunt for the North, but it would sure be a lot easier. Without them stepping up, we will be playing with no margin for error, and no margin for injury. It would be nice that we play two down linemen because we want to, not because we have to. We MIGHT be able to get by with two solid linemen plus Phillips. If we can have three or four solid linemen plus Phillips, we should be pretty invincible on defense.

From Hank's article,

Quote:It's hard to separate the different responsibilities of an offensive line, but the folks over at Football Outsiders have tried. Over the past three seasons they've ranked every offensive line in the country using a combination of statistics traditional (Sack Rate) and esoteric (Power Success Rate). During that time the Cardinal has ranked 59th, 41st, and 48th out of 128 teams. Surprisingly mediocre.

A few things. The stat referenced is "Adjusted Line Yards", which is one of nine separate stats that Football Outsiders presents to evaluate OLs.

It specifically does NOT include anything about the pass game, so that is reason that 2016 wasn't down far from 2015.

It does seem to be the OL stat that they push the most. However, I have always thought that it appears to be particularly ineffective stat.

Here is what they say about the stat,
Quote:Adjusted Line Yards (ALY): Statistic that attempts to, even to a small extent, separate the ability of a running back from the ability of the offensive line. Adjusted Line Yards begin as a measure of average rushing yards per play by running backs only, adjusted in the following way:

    0-4 yards: 100% strength
    5-10 yards: 50% strength
    11+ yards: not included
runs for a loss: 120% strength

Each play is also adjusted based on game situation as well as quality of opponents faced. Adjusted Line Yards can be listed as total or broken down by direction to attempt to isolate ability of specific linemen.

I see no problems with any of those words, and they seem to be things that would play to Stanford's strengths. However, I simply do not believe that the 2015 Stanford OL was only #41 in the country in run blocking, behind teams like cal.

But, I don't know what in particular I would object to. Maybe if they gave the exact formula I could figure it out.

Re: Training Camp Thread 2017 - SUBuddha - 08-04-2017

On the way home today one of the local Tucson radio honks pegged Bryce Love as his pick for the AA running back by years end and his dark horse for the HWORD.

Wow, CT -- thanks for doing what I should've done in the first place -- read carefully. I've taken out that paragraph, as it clearly makes no  sense at all. Thanks again.

So spectators stand behind the fence ? There is no available bleacher seating ?

And now you know the etymology of the term for spectators at practice:  "railbirds"  ;)

they usually have a few sets of portable bleachers with maybe 5 or 6 rows of seats
