Re: Signing Day - Snorlax94 - 02-07-2018

Ugh, the class does look quite disappointing. I share the concern that it may in part be due to the earlier early signing period. Is anyone aware of a list of schools with more rigorous admissions policies for football players? For example, did Northwestern, Rice and Duke also have off years?

My hope is part of the lapse is due to our current personnel strengths. A year ago, it was obvious Stanford needed O Tackles and that there would be an opportunity for a true freshman to start. Now with Little, Sarell and Herbig on the roster, it might look less  attractive to a star OLine recruit -- not many starting openings til 2020. So, the hope is, as we approach having more openings on the O Line, more linemen will commit.

Though that wouldn't explain the lack of I Linebackers.

Also, I wonder if the All-SEC championship game hurt the Pac-12's recruiting this year (Even though USC still did well, to my understanding, more west coast prospects are bypassing the Pac-12).

Re: Signing Day - Hey - 02-07-2018

I'm still enjoying the ride.  Flashback to 12 years ago and I never thought I'd see this run of success in Stanford football in my life.

Plus, I love seeing a 2 and 3 star recruit really blossom (Marecic, Whalens, Gardner, Troy Walters, Brevin Knight...)

Re: Signing Day - fullmetal - 02-07-2018

Do we have any significant contributors right now who were relatively unheralded during their recruitment?  Trying to get a feel for how the coaching staff is doing in terms of player development, but my memory is fuzzy.

Well I thought so, but I was having a senior moment.  But my point still stands -- not much difference IMHO in extending early enrollment one quarter earlier.  After all it impacts a total of maybe 15-25 kids out of about 1700 = about 1%

Re: Signing Day - teejers1 - 02-07-2018

I'm no recruitnik . . . but you don't have to be to see that this was a major failure on the part of the staff.  Hopefully just a one-year blip, but aficionados on the  other site are less sanguine.  Very rational and fact-based posters (I'm thinking Matt Squeri, in particular) have painted a pretty grim picture of the staff's recruiting strategy and efforts of late (2018 a disaster; 2019 not much better in terms of early offers, getting on sufficient number of radars, etc.).

That is troubling.  And still something I don't really "get."  I've been a consistent critic of Shaw as a game caller and offensive mind; but I've always believed Shaw is an excellent rep for the university and role model for many young men.  And I've found his recruiting to be at least good, on average.  It's troubling that there was such a glaring ball drop here.

Not really.  Alijah Holder only had 6 offers.  Harrison Phillips had a lot of offers, but few outside of the Midwest.  Less recently, Michael Rector, Johnny Caspers and Blake Martinez all didn't have much of an offer list.
