First, Wake Forest stinks. They are a Sonny Dykes Cal team that plays no defense and has even lesser athletes than Cal. This means their defense stays on the field a lot and wears out, particularly in the sweltering conditions they played in.
Second, Stanford fans have seen what happens when the new QB plays against bad defenses. This was Keller Chryst in 2016. He rolled up Arizona and Oregon State among other bad defenses. But he was benched in 2017 and ultimately transferred because he wasn't good against good teams.
Stanford is #6 in the country in Points Per Play Allowed. Notre Dame is #14. I don't imagine ND's D is much better than Oregon's, but I know Stanford's is much, much better than Wake's.
Book is going to throw some picks as he hasn't faced a defense this good, and if he was good enough to have started the season, he would have.
Again, another Stanford example. In 2011, Josh Nunes was the starting QB, even beat USC when they were ranked high early in year. When he struggled, everyone expected Nottingham. But the guy who actually played instead was Kevin Hogan. What I'm saying here is Book is much more likely to be a Keller Chryst than a Kevin Hogan. He'll beat up a lousy Wake team, but odds are he will struggle quite a bit against a very good Stanford squad.
Stanford has its own issues of course, so I'm not claiming ND has no chance to win with Book. I just agree Wimbush gives them a better chance to win.
WF is really bad and i would be blown away surprised if Book doesn't struggle. i could see 1 or 2 picks in the first half OR a lot of 3 and outs bc hes afraid to attack. I expect our defense to give up somewhere around the 27 pt mark. the question is can our offense score 28? i doubt it solely with book. To me, BW's running ability throws in enough curve to give you a chance.
For our defense, i have been surprised at their struggles. People have mainly focused on the offensive struggles and said "he we have the great defense, but the offense is putting them in bad spots". I think this is true, but there is something more than that and im not sure what it is. We were suppose to have this great secondary, and they are really hard hitters and solid tacklers, but they are just a step too late. ND has a lot of depth on the D-Line, which can really help us in the 4th quarter, and they area really good at getting pressure, but not sacks - just a step behind. Our MLB are beasts, but once again - a step behind (kind of a theme huh). Against an average to good offense, they are good enough to win, but against an explosive kind, they will give up 8-10 yards a play. Alot of strength, usually pretty smart, but need to step it up if we are going to win this game.
we usually have a bend but dont break attitude, but the problem is, against the stanford team, you guys get in the redzone, those receivers make it tough to keep you out of the endzone (7 td passes on 14 rzatt).

This is an extremely dangerous game for gamblers. You have Book coming off a big game against a lousy Wake team, facing the best defense he has played so far. You have a KJ Costello who had a brilliant road performance in arguably a tougher place to play than South Bend. But then you have the potential for Stanford having a let-down after such a big win in a non-conference road game. Of course, the flip to this is Stanford could be super confident and feel they are a team of playoff destiny if they knock off ND.
I wouldn't bet this game if my life depended on it.

I wouldn't want to half to bet it.
One additional FYI, if these are ACC refs... they have been garbage this year. I think it will be p12, but ACC ones have been terrible. So many blown calls, on both sides against ball state/vandy. if you watch close, it won't just be ones helping ND, they are blowing calls all over the place.

you're probably right. i'm not touchin' this one. i made $10,000 bets when i lived in Nevada, and i basically broke even.
there are some bets that you just wanna stay the hell away from.

Not sure if "a step too late" will be a specific issue against Stanford or not.
However, it appears the und starting nickel backfield runs 5'11'', 5'11'', 6'0'', 6'0'', 6'1''.
So, how well will they cover our guys catching passes who go 6'2'', 6'2'', 6'3'' (that's JJAW - seems taller to me), 6'5'', 6'7''.
Outreaching the defenders is really the plus feature of the Stanford offense right now.

The mystery component of the Stanford offense is what has happened to the run game.
The optimistic (from Stanford's POV) take is that the problems are largely a combination of OL health and having faced the #2 and #4 rush defenses in the country (ypg) so far this year. Well, those two and #89 $C and not ranked because they are FCS Davis. und comes in at #62, allowing 145 yds/gm and 3.45 yds/carry.
[Davis, by the way, is allowing a very respectable 3.5 yds/carry and 115 yds/game on rush defense. Though of course outside of Stanford that is against San Jose State, San Diego, and Idaho.]
Healthy or not, Stanford looks to have most of their nominal starting OL in the game at South Bend. Love seems to be healthy and Trevor Speights comes back. If we can get anything out of the run game, even if it is only to keep the und safeties up, then that is a bonus.

i watched the Michigan Notre Dame game. Impressions:
1. Wimbush won the game. (Yes, he had help.) His mobility, elusiveness, and the occasional good throw made the difference.
2. Michigan's DL won that battle, but ND's OL is solid.
3. Notre Dame's DL must be reckoned with. Kelly and Tilley looked good. (You have a backup DE (right sider), however, who looked comically bad.)
3. ND's apparent, relative lack of play making skill players, other than Wimbush, surprised me.
4. Patterson was perhaps so-so, and depended on his tight ends, who were fine but certainly not yards-after-catch guys.
5. I'd prefer to face a QB whose not as mobile and elusive as Wimbush.
We've played well at South Bend in recent years. Notre Dame has the better DL and Ol, Stanford the better TEs, WRs, QB, RB, and defensive backs.

Flutie is a joke, doesn't do his homework. loves the opportunity to show off how "smart" he is. Can't call a unbiased game.

1. I agree, people keep talking about how he just threw the ball up for grabs, but you don't really have a choice against that defense. If you wait till they are "open" you will get sacked every time.
2. Agree, i was pleased with the oline after this game, not so much after ball state, lol.
3. Tillery is good (he did some very dirty plays against USC his freshman year and its still hard for me to forget that), i really like Hayes (#9), great speed, just needs to get a little more physical. all in all a pretty solid group. Not clemson good, but good enough to win.
4. Im not sure whats going on there, they should be better here then what they are. Claypool, mack, etc. I don't know if they just think they are better than they are and don't push themselves or what, but the ability is there, the execution is poor.
5. yeah, he throws a great ball, but not sure how well he fits with michigan, they are improving though.
6. thats the way i feel. If they could adjust the gameplan for BW to be like IB he could do very well. Heres the thing, IB was able to snap the ball and make a throw, or snap the ball and then hand it off, or snap it then run. He did all of them well. They make BW snap it, run the option all teh way down till hes face to face with a DE, make a decision, pull it then evaluate to run or pass, if he decides to pass, drop back and then make a good throw. Every play is a high pressure situation. the timing with the receiver routes get thrown off, the o line struggles with knowing if they should pass block or run block, etc. Go back and either run the ball or throw the ball. You can throw in a little option in the backfield, but they push it way too much. IB should concern you from an efficiency standpoint, BW should concern you from a play making standpoint.

Is watching the oregon game a good sample of stanford? Obviously it has been the most execting game, but is that the best representation of who you are as a team?
RE: Stanford - Notre Dame discussion with NDIrish -
OutsiderFan - 09-26-2018
The second half of Stanford - Oregon is a better representation of the Stanford team, namely because that included the non-FUBAR OL configuration on Stanford's side.
Also, it's been a trend for a while, Stanford's defense tends to play better after the first half. They routinely give up big plays in first halves for some reason, and not so much in the second.
Of course, this means you're getting two different Stanford teams all the time, and both count. So might as well watch the hole game :)

Fans are paranoid about injuries on their teams.
Stanford has four regulars out in WR Wedington, S Edwards, and OLBs Robinson and Toohill. And backup OL (or potential starting LG) Foster Sarell is also out. Stanford is getting back OL Hamilton, S Simmons, and RB Speights this week. Stanford fans were freaking out last week, but a little more sanguine this week.
What's the ND injury situation? ND fan freakout level?
