No identity for this team at all.

So frustrating, no awareness at all. Nobody around him at all. If he turns upfield, easily another 5 yards. If he just falls down, at least he has the first down, the clock stops to move the chains saving precious seconds, and the downs are reset. The one thing he couldn't do was the one thing he did.
And on 3rd down, Mills has a brobdingnagian opening to his right to just tuck and run a couple yards for the first down (maybe has room to get 10 yards), but instead he just throws it away.
We had a lot of time to still use the middle of the field -- that was just a horrible way to play the final drive.

INJURIES will get all the blame this season, but the lack of point and yardage production is THE SYSTEM, not just injuries.
Absolutely true. But we won't do enough better next year if we are dealing with the same pervasive injuries.

I mean twice the offense scored to take the lead, and twice the defense allowed the worst offense in the PAC-12 to march down the field and score a touchdown.

The team also lost because it lacked two other hallmarks of a Walsh team: a run game and a defense.

I do hope this sticks in the craws of the players who are coming back. Should be able to find some motivation in all this.

And with even decent clock management and play calling at the end of that drive it would have been 1:30 left and one or zero timeouts.
Scott Reiss absolutely nailed it in the post game - 2nd & 4 with 3 mins left inside a 50 yard FG attempt - RUN THE DAMN FOOTBALL!!!!!!
Add to that 2 delays of game in the first half and burning two TOs to avoid more in the second half. Shaw is not a rookie head coach this is his NINTH SEASON. Clock management like that is inexcusable. He should have one of his assistants whose sole job is to be in his ear about clock management, because he absolutely sucks at it.

Don't forget that two weeks ago Weddington runs a two yard out on a critical 3rd & 3.
Both of them have the same crappy position coach who hasn't been able to get arguably one of the fastest players on the team (St Brown) coached up to get any separation all year.
Time for Kennedy to find employment elsewhere, starting next Sunday after this miserable season ends. And take Hansen and Fanboy Hero with you.

Been to a bunch of Big Game viewing parties in San Diego and Orange County. This was my first one in the city of Seattle, and the first time this season I have actually seen our team play. The ending of this game delivered a particularly vicious cut because Stanford gave it away at least as much as Cal won it, especially on the last series.
Second down, the receiver has the first down, runs backward and gets stopped short of the first down.
Third down, Mills could have run for the first down with ease and tried a fancy pass that led to nothing.
And I'm not even going to talk about fourth down.
When Garbers ran for the last TD of the game I snapped, and at this moment am making this post without a voice. Fortunately this got absorbed by the deafening ruckus from the 30 or so Cal fans that we were sharing Kell's with.
This evening can still have positive effects if it jolts Shaw awake and forces him to look at the operation of the team with critical rigor. The degradation since the Iowa Rose Bowl has been undeniable as elite-level players and assistants have moved on. Shaw's coaching in his first 8 years was varying degrees of good. This year he has coached like WLAT. There will be 70 or more teams this season going bowling, and there is really no good reason that Stanford shouldn't have been among them with the playmakers at hand on its roster. Meanwhile Wilcox has done a masterful job, getting to a bowl game with an OL that, to put it mildly, is not good.
Still something to play for in 2019: defend the Farm for a sixth straight time from ND, and bump the Irish out of the NY6 pool.

Running the ball twice wouldn’t have made a damned bit of difference unless we got a first down. Cal had plenty of time outs, so if we ran the first time, they would have used a time out after third down to give themselves exactly the same amount of time to match down the field.
In fact, Wilcox probably should have called a time out earlier to give himself an extra 40 seconds; you can hurry up your own offense, but you can’t hurry up your opponent’s, so time outs are better used on defense.

Hell, the NW game wasn't even that good, especially considering how bad they turned out to be.

stupac nailed it--kal's OL is good, but not that good. Even just 1-2 of the justified holding calls would have opened up the game for our pass rushers, but instead, kal got away with murder. Not only does holding keep Garbers off the dirt, but a split second hold can let Garbers escape for a 10 yd run.
Anyone notice a certain young Stanford CB get victimized multiple times throughout the 2H? Oof. Bad. Sympathies, but that could have been the game a few times there. Akina will have some work to do.
Mills got desperate too early with those INTs. This is Big Game. Can't lose it.
OSB failing to turn it upfield instead of dancing away from a first down--that didn't quite lose the game, but it was indicative of the do-too-much mentality. I mean, JFC. First down! This is Big Game, go north-south!
Overall not a good look for the WRs coach, but to be fair, Fehoko coming back from a mission and starting to light it up has to count for something.
The slow-developing run plays are still killing us when the RB doesn't go quickly enough. Watching RBs get tackled from behind in the backfield is not a good look. If the OL isn't getting push, then maybe your vaunted new blocking scheme isn't working. Going back to those NFL scout reports from last year: OL needs explosiveness off the ball, needs some strength.
Fourth and one running the ball? Try some misdirection sometime, worked great against UW iirc. But hey, maybe you deserve to lose if you can't coach, train, or condition your OL to guarantee you one single yard with the game on the line.
Did anyone see the Stanford Football Instagram takeover by Foster Sarell before the WSU game? It was hilarious, esp when it got to the pregame dinner table seating...

Carberry gets a pass with 3 3* true freshmen - who should realistically not be playing for another couple years - on the line.

The OL gave up 4 TFL's all game (3 of which we sacks), which is well below Cal's average and much less than we imparted on the Bears (9 TFL's). The problem was not the tackles for loss, it was that the gains were very limited. I don't think we had a run break 11 yards.

Sorry but he doesn't. He is at least in part responsible for the recruiting/development failures that created the lack of depth, necessitating having these players on the field. And two years in a row the run blocking has been atrocious.

Nope; 100% on Bloomgren. He recruited and developed 4 non-contributors in '15, and another in '16. He recruited only ONE guy on his way out in '18, who may retire without ever practicing at Stanford. (Buck stops at Shaw for allowing that to happen.)
Carberry's first class was the 5 freshmen in '19. He was reportedly horrified at the recruiting and depth situations when he got here, having to teach a new scheme to 7 healthy linemen with shortened spring practices while trying to fill 5 recruiting spots with ZERO head start from Bloom. The fact that 4 of these guys - who Carberry had to recruit from scratch when they were all juniors, which is super late - seem like down the road they will be good (Nugent TBD, he's the only one who hasn't played much) is a f***ing MIRACLE.
Who has Carberry contributed to "failing to develop" in his 2 years here? The freshmen who shouldn't even be playing? Dalman and Sarell, who are playing their best ball right now? Little, who was great regardless? Herbig, who never got better (and arguably got worse) under Bloom before Carberry even got here, and had his own issues that I can't go further into? Trey Stratford, the walking dead? The 2 seniors last year who weren't good enough to contribute here anyways (because Bloom failed to develop them) and rightfully retired/grad transferred? (Chaffin getting his MBA at Rice, a very good MBA program, and Wilson getting his Master's in ME at Stanford...awesome for both of them, btw!) The 3 seniors who are all out for the season right now? Who?

The recruiting failures happened in the 2018 class, when Bloomberg checked out and before Carberry was hired (he was hired Jan 2018, well after the early signing season). The 2019 class, which was the first that Carberry recruited, has featured three true freshmen starters (more out of necessity than because they beat anyone out), but all things considered, they seem at the very least competent, and it is hard to consider it a recruitment failure. The 2020 class has issues, but they don't seem to be in the offensive line.
I don't know that we can say that Carberry is a success, but you cannot pin any recruiting failures on him. As you point out, run blocking has been problematic this year, and now that it is his second year in the program, it is reasonable to ask if he is not implementing the duo blocking scheme well. On the other hand, as Sam has noted, three true freshmen.
