Tremendously entertaining and well played football game.

Would have been nice to score more than 7 pts in second half, but at least they weren't needed.

You must make plays to win games and Stanford made many.

Mills really is an uber talented QB. His quick feet and release on the first 3rd down conversion of the last drive was a tremendous example of that. Nick Mullens, an NFL QB, can't do that.

Now Crimson is a Bolshevik. Czar is used in many ways. Rozelle, Hays Of Hollywood, Uebberoth. Not a dig. Geesh in spades.

Mills was fantastic today.   He did not have a lot of big windows to throw the ball into. And he showed some pocket presence made some plays outside the pocket made a lot of different types of throws.  He also made great decisions. And one of his best was actually on what I believe was supposed to be a reverse. He had somebody coming around to pitch the ball too but not only would it have been completely blown up it actually could’ve been a disaster because there were several players right there a pitch could’ve picked off.  He kept it and basically just fell  forward for about a yard.

Second-half seven points little bit misleading. For one they didn’t have the ball a whole lot. Only three drives before the four minute drill to win it. Second drive, they had a first down at about midfield, but a second down pass was dropped. And  then the Jones fumble on the next drive.  They  only punted once.

And of course ball control was absolutely crucial in this game. Because they were simply helpless in the secondary against Washington. They did a pretty decent job against the run. (They at least avoided giving up a big run). But man they could do absolutely nothing against the pass

I think Lance sold out to stop the run especially in the first half today. Saw a LOT more 3-4 looks (as opposed to 2-4-5 nickel). We changed it up to nickel again assuming they would try passing more in the 2H, but they didn't - and started chunking up yards on runs.

That said, it generally seemed to work; they had 120ish on the ground total. Their QB had a couple superman-type throws, and their WRs made a couple insane catches. Fortunately so did ours :)

RE: Washington Game Thread - martyup - 12-05-2020

Jones was excellent with 138 yards on 31 Carrie's for 4.5 ypc.  Peat was also very good with 44 yard on 7 carries for 6 3 ypc.  It's hard to stop an offense with numbers like that.

Yes indeed. Dr. "Don't call her Czar" Cody had edicted that no contact sports, at any level, are allowed in Santa Clara County. No 49ers, no Cardinal, no Spartans, no Sharks, nobody. The only county in the country with such a edict.

I suspect they may stay in the Northwest even after the Oregon State game to play the one game they missed vs. Wazzu during the weekend of the conference championship.

Of course, that's a very long 3-week road trip, and it's a lot to ask of the whole team for a presumably meaningless game.  It would also be surprising if they don't end up having any COVID issues after spending that long on the road, presumably eating in restaurants and being exposed to many people in hospitality outside their bubble. Dr. Cody's decision definitely put the team, their families (when they go home for the holidays), and their communities at greater risk, not less. It would have been more rational if coordinated at a regional or at least statewide level, but as it stands, nothing good has been achieved.

Nice.  Vincent White.  One of the more underrated Stanford players.

We only had three possessions that didn't end at the end of the game.  We had one TD, one punt, and the fumble.  We were certainly in field goal range and had first and ten at the Washington 12 at the end of the game, so we could have scored more had we needed to.  To be honest, the last drive 14 plays, 79 yards, nearly 8(!) minutes, was the most impressive of the game.  We converted two third downs and a fourth down.  Mills had a couple big third down passes, and at the end, Jones had runs of 3, 11, 2, 5, 2, 3 against a defense that was selling out to stop the run.

To be honest, one of the most satisfying things to watch in the 2009 - 2015 era was Stanford get the ball in the fourth quarter with a one-score lead and and not relinquish the ball to the other team.  We'd run a 10+ play drive that chewed up 5+ minutes and ended with us taking a knee.  This was a nice reminder of those days.

DL never got near Morris. I think that might have had a lot to do with it. With a few glaring exceptions, I thought DB play was pretty good today.

Indeed.  Austin Jones reminded me of Stepfan, and his stat line was reminiscent as well - 31 carries for 138 yards and 2 TDs, plus 3 receptions for 28 yards.

Some unfortunate news to rain on the parade...

Indeed it was. However, to see more of that we are going to need a better defense. We are too thin in too many places and have no margin for error on defense. To be realistic, UW stopped themselves a couple of times. That's fine when it happens, but it doesn't always happen.

RE: Washington Game Thread - BostonCard - 12-05-2020

But that's also why that offensive series was so important.  I wouldn't have wanted to see what UW could do with the ball and 2+ minutes left.

Bummer. Feel bad for them. Especially Wedington  he’s had a hard time staying on the field. When he has played he’s been really good

So... For Dec. 19 we get WAZZU in Pullman -- in the snow?
Last month on Dec. 19 during Pac-12 Champ game, the other teams were going to play their same ranked team in the other division.
Could be UCLA for Stanford (?) in the Rose Bowl... in December.  Instead, with COVID, we get the Snow-blower Bowl?
The two week ahead forecast for Pullman Dec. 19 is "Rain / Snow Showers" and 39F.  For a Calif team on the road.

Amen! I am sure none of us wanted to do that experiment. Stanford fans have seen that movie many times in the last century against lots of teams.

WOW -- Czar Cody, MD -- Santa Clara County Health Chief -- got an award in October for "Handling COVID"...

Is that like the Yasir Arafat Nobel Peace Prize in 1994?

To be clear, the game in Pullman is pure speculation on my part, because the team is in the Northwest, the schedule for that date was left open, and Wazzu is the one game that was cancelled.  But thinking it through, if Washington loses to Oregon next week, then certainly the make-up of the Apple Cup would take precedence. We might get one of the LA teams or nobody at all.

RE: Washington Game Thread - doubledub - 12-05-2020

Who was calling the plays? Did anyone else notice that when they showed Tavita in the pressbox his microphone was up, as in he couldn't talk to anyone, and we were on offense?
