I mean the women's basketball team has 15 scholarship athletes, of which, by definition 10 cannot be starters. Alyssa Jerome, Maya Dodson, Jenna Brown, to give some other examples, are upperclassmen who have been passed up by younger players and could have transferred, but haven't. As you point out, the majority of Stanford athletes really do love being at Stanford and will stick it out even if they remain on the bench. But obviously not everyone, and we do get some players who transfer out of the system in search of better opportunities at other schools.
Could Prechtel transfer out? Of course. But I suspect that decision is probably less influenced by how many minutes she is getting than by general satisfaction with the staff, the school, and everything else. The last player who transferred out didn't leave because of a dearth of minutes; Carrington was a starter!

TJ bringing up a possible transfer is indeed too much doom and gloom for me not to comment. Yes I’m a bright side kind of guy
Who was the last transfer scholarship player prior to graduating ?

I don't know but I'm going to guess Taylor Rooks. But she transferred to Harvard so didn't really lose out on a great education.

I understand your support for Stanford athletics but to be fair to TJ, he was basically positive about Prechtel's skill as a player. He commented about transferring mostly in a generic manner; about how Covid has possibly changed some of a student's on-campus experience at any college.
I'm a big fan of Prechtel, but my observation was that Prechtel did not have a good game.
OK, this is my last post on this thread. I will stay out of the way.

Yeah, I should have noted that Carrington was a grad transfer and had her Stanford degree already. The math is a bit different for someone who graduates from Stanford and has the option to pursue a graduate degree elsewhere and maybe get to start for a different team. It's a great option for certain people, and given that this year is not counting in terms of eligibility loss, I wouldn't be surprised if a few elect to grad transfer (either at the end of this year for seniors with a year of eligibility left) or in future years.

We have collectively been through this discussion before on the football transfer portal. When one arrives at Stanford as a freshman, one brings some hopes, some dreams, and some expectations. It is normal that things don't work out exactly as envisioned. Sometimes that is an obvious "good" thing, other times it is muddier. After a few years, and certainly after a four year degree, it is normal that smart people will find opportunities elsewhere that are, or at least appear to be, better than remaining at Stanford. In the end, virtually everybody leaves. It is just a question of timing.

It's interesting to note that our top two scorers from last year (Williams, 15.6 pts and Lexie, 13.6 pts) are now the 5th and 6th leading scorers on the team. Williams has struggled with her shot the last two games, however I take this more as a sign that our offense has become more diversified. Last year we needed Williams and Lexie to be shooting well for us to be competitive against top teams. We didn't really have a plan B. This year we have a healthy Jones who can slash to the basket. A much improved Belibi who has better interior post moves and footwork. And a freshman in Brink who has shown the ability to drive as well as score around the rim. We haven't had this kind of reliable inside scoring since Chiney's senior year. We maybe had some of it when Alanna Smith was a senior but as often as she posted up she also drifted to the perimeter to shoot threes.

it's possible, but i wouldn't expect prechtel to transfer. we only have 3 post players, and tara rotates posts; so prechtel will get plenty of playing time. i remember when naomi mulitaoopele, heather owen, kristin folkl and olympia scott all got playing time as posts on the team together - with carolyn moos and chandra benton backing them up. (jamila wideman, vanessa nygaard, and kate starbird were on that team as well; we got robbed of the national championship; that 5th foul on folkl was all ball!)
dijonai is a different story. she was my favorite player on the team, and it was sad to have her leave, but she plays the same position as haley jones - the 3 in a 2 post line-up or the 4 in a 1-post. haley will be on the court 35 minutes in tight games - as much as, say, kiana - so dijonai would have come off the bench this year and played low minutes, which is a disservice to someone so good when healthy (she was the nation's top high school rebounder, and, before her knee injuries, she was a top 10 recruit). if she stays healthy, dijonai likely expects to play in the wnba and needs to showcase her skills; not so much ashten.
ashten was recruited over.
cameron brink arrives as only our 2nd top 5 recruit since chiney. ashten was a very good high school player, but she was not a star like haley or cameron in high school. and transfers are much more common in football, especially with qb's: kj leaves when davis mills starts, or jt daniels leaves when kedon slovis starts. (and jt is doing great at georgia).

I agree with you, jonnyss. And setting Prechtel aside for a moment: has there ever been a Stanford player who's transferred prior to graduation for playing time? We've had players graduate in three years (Moschkau); sit out, graduate, then grad-transfer (Thompson); convert a medical red-shirt year into a grad transfer due to perceived shortage of schollys (Carrington, Sniezek); transfer because the injury protocol wouldn't let them play (Carey); and even walk away from bball altogether (Johnson, Dodson--temporarilyish). But I can't think of a single player who has walked away from a free ride at Stanford because they are one of the first off the bench.
And BTW, speaking of the bench, Prechtel fouled at a pace of 1 foul per 2.5 minutes. Little wonder she didn't stay in the game long. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the best one.

1. Hope you guys are right; but am concerned you do not appreciate the importance of hoops to these players' outlook on college generally; and
2. The fouls stat from the Cal game is a bit silly, given that Prechtel picked up 2 of those fouls (at least) very late in the game.

Nothing for me to be "right" about because I never said she wouldn't transfer. Indeed, I have *no* special insight into her thinking. What I said was that it would be unprecedented for a Stanford WCBB to transfer before graduating solely in search of more minutes, so the usual "transfers for playing time" card has not tended to apply around here.

Not silly at all. Let's recap:
Prechtel was subbed in ~6 minutes into the game at 3:42 remaining in the first. She immediately fouled at 3:28, then committed a turnover at 3:11, then fouled again at 2:35. Two fouls in a little over a minute. Tara has LONG sat players once they have two fouls before the half, so not surprised the same rules apply to Prechtel as have applied to just about every player ever.
Then, in Q3, Prechtel was subbed in pretty quickly at 8:23, but she picked up her third foul at 6:01. Again, 3 fouls in the 3 quarters and 6 minutes of play total. Really easy to see why she didn't get much playing time.
And I just don't believe in starting totally baseless speculation. As the kids say, if you have receipts, please show them, otherwise I'd say her fouls explain her limited minutes against Cal. Vs. Washington, she played for 15 mins (w/ 1 foul) versus Brink who played for 9 mins (w/ 2).

She did say they were scheduled to play at South Carolina and at Tennessee.. I also recall someone posting they were also scheduled to play Texas.. obviously COVID changed all those plans.. hopefully they can schedule those big games next season.. but for this season, I hope they continue getting better and are able to finish it successfully!

Your point about baseless speculation is a reasonable one, and I agree that stirring the pot just for kicks is pointless and perhaps worse. I acknowledged that it was speculation - as for the baseless part . . . I'll go so far as probably (and certainly hopefully).
The fouls thing . . . well, I'll just stop on this topic.
