This very much surprises me....
Haley Jones went out at Q2 7:45 (21-22) and back in at Q2 5:59 (29-24)
then out at Q2 03:02 (31-30) and back in at Q3 10:00 (41-33).
Stanford won the 4:48 that she was out by a score of 18-5.
In the 35:12 that she was in, Stanford lost 57-64.
Haley was the only one with a negative +/- for Stanford.
It wasn't just that her turnovers and misses hurt while she was in, Stanford did far better when she was out.
That 4:48 was on a pace for a 150-42 for 40 minutes.
Ok, Arizona would have adjusted, but still...

She won't replace Jump but will keep her sharp, we hope. Don't think you can play them at the same time as neither are as good defensively as the Hulls and Anna. And, hopefully, Jana will realize the high school layups aren't there.
Brink was great and Belibi really coming on.
The refs were awful. Let 'em play is one thing, but there were several times that our players got shoved/smacked, a couple of times knocking our player down, and no call. I'm disregarding the number of times our players got hacked shooting, but you can't allow pushing and knock downs, players can get hurt. And most of the fouls called us were very ticky-tack and a couple were phantom. The refs just wanted to keep the game close so as not to diminish a top P12 team.
Oh, come on.

Arizona impressed me today. They are better than I thought they were. They did hit shots, maybe more than they normally do, but a very dangerous team nonetheless. As for the game:
- Give it up for Jana! Unreal shooting. I think Jump is a better all around 2 guard, but I could totally see Jana backing her up and getting even more PT in games where Hannah isn't shooting it well or when we need more ball handling.
- Give it up for Brink. Holy $H!t, what a game.
- Give it up for Anna. 40 minutes and a really nice job on Sam Thomas.
- Give it up for our team winning the rebounding battle. Not just Cam, but Haley, Lacie, and Lexie. Definitely a win in the toughness column.
- Give it up for Coach TVD. You don't win games like that without some great decisions and adjustments throughout.
- I also have to give it up for Reese. Those 3 threes in a row in the third quarter kept them in the game. Those were so timely - I felt like we were close to blowing it open.
- They killed us with that mid-range pick and pop. They must have made 6 or 8 of those throughout the course of the game. Cam helps off to stop the drive and no one else was rotating over to pick up the screener. I think that might have been by design as we didn't want to leave their best shooters open for threes, but we had no answer for that. Pellington and Yeaney are so strong attacking the basket, it just makes it tough to defend.
- I'm probably in the minority here, but once again I very much liked the aggressive play the refs allowed. All the players got to battle and leave it out there on the court. That could have been a 50 free throw game. That said, 2 of Brinks fouls were ridiculous: The one at the end on Pellington and the screen out on the perimeter. The players were all laughing at that one, right on the court. And that phantom moving screen call on Haley. Blechhh.

Interesting and insightful. Antonelli who called today's game was at the Bahamas tourney so I trust her inside information.
Fran also deserves a shoutout as she had a solid game along with Lacie, Wilson, and Brink.
The announcers also repeatedly called Jana a freshman, so they still have some work to do...

Do you mean the announcers that apparently only see PAC-12 games when they have to call them? The ones going off 2-month old information?
The ones that went on about Stanford's poor FT%? The ones that didn't realize Stanford had hit 74.4% of their FTA over the last 10 games (131 of 176)?
By the way, going into the game, the season FT% (67.8) for Stanford was better than South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, and UConn, and nipping at the Tar Heels (67.9%) (those are 6 of the top 10). 74.4% would lead every team ranked in the top 10.
Hats off to Iowa (85.5%) and Iowa State (81.3%) for having a much higher FT% than any of the other top-25 (77.0% was the best of the other 23 of whatever top-25 I grabbed -- it still bounces around a lot). I wonder why it is that those are from the same state?

Our fan base is quite elderly, and consequently has a lot more COVID fear than a younger crowd might. I think that depressed attendance last fall some and no doubt continues to do so. That plus the 49ers took a toll. That said, I think this looked like the best crowd this year--I would have to check the Texas attendance, but this was certainly the loudest and most boisterous crowd I've attended this year. The bobblehead succeeded in getting all the regulars to come super early, but did not draw a whole lot of non-regulars.

I did not see the broadcast since I was at the game, but in general I have been appalled by the ESPN broadcasters. They routinely talk about WBB in general and ignore calling the play of the game. It is as if they are getting together for a chat about WBB and whatever game they are at just happens to be their backdrop. They can't hold a candle to Mary Murphy. I want to listen to broadcasters who teach me something about the game I am watching that I could not see without their help.

Just stop. The ESPN crew did just fine today and was plenty complimentary of our team and program. I recall a game I listened to on Stanford live stream this season where our OWN announcer repeatedly called Tara, coach Heidi Vanderveer and never once pronounced Fran’s last name correctly. The ESPN crew not memorizing our stats from the past 10 games is a nonissue. Maybe it would help if we were on ESPN more but that’s the Pac12s fault with their media deals.

I agree the announcers were pretty good today. They focused mostly on the game. Usually ESPN personnel talk about everything except the action on the court which I can't stand.
In the first quarter Stanford's ball movement and passing was very good at times. Arizona adjusted during the game and went more toward aggressive defense which is oftentimes Stanford's biggest challenge.

The folks who sit next to me have family responsibilities this season and I think this was the second game they attended. They had to work hard to get there, but it was the bobblehead that pushed them to do so.

Had to digest our win, get over the 49ers, inspect the box score, and think about what I witnessed. Here are my impressions. I agree with so much that has been said above!
1) Brink, Belibi, Prechtel, Iriafan, and Demetre each have their own individual character as "bigs." Depending on the matchups posed by the opposition one or the other might have the advantage. Tara's genius is figuring out which to play in which situations. This was clearly Brink's night. I think when she hit that trey it changed the character of her season--it was her first made trey of the season, after quite a few last year. I've commented in the past that she needed to stretch the defense out a little by occasionally hitting jumpers the way she did last year, and now she has started. I also think that our offense sometimes stagnated when she had the ball at the elbow and was looking to pass to a cutter--what worked was when she realized she could put it on the floor and attack the basket herself. I hope we continue to see that in future games. But 10/12 and 4/5 free throws was just stupendous, especially considering Arizona's reputation as a fierce defensive team.
2) That said, we had a wonderful series of back door cuts in the first quarter. Some of the best back door cutting I've ever seen. Barnes finally took a time out--we clearly had scouted a weakness of Arizona and were exploiting it.
3) Let me add to the accolades heaped on JVG. Also interesting to hear more about why she has not played more. I watched her face very carefully when she was on defense, and it was focused and very fierce. Whatever her physical abilities may be, she was
intense. And hitting 6/8 from long range is not a bad coming-out party.
4) Haley had 6 assists, but unfortunately this was one of her bad turnover days. And not so much to show for herself offensively either. There were a number of times when she sagged off her mark and just let her shoot--I hope that was in the game plan because it looked terrible for her to just sit back while Cate Reese launched bomb after bomb. It might have been by design--Reese is normally only a 25% three point shooter.
5) I am not as worried about Cate Reese as some of the earlier commentators are--I doubt she can sustain that shooting accuracy from three point range. Without those quick 9 points she was 3/13--we controlled her. I am very worried about meeting Arizona in the Pac 12 tourney or beyond since we did not really have a good answer for Shaina Pellington, who did as well against us as Ari McDonald often did. We had no one who could stay in front of her and she finished very well. The short pull up jumper was deadly.
6) I am worried about Lexie. I wonder if she is completely healthy. Since her gusher against Oregon she has had 1 good offensive game and 5 sub-par offensive games. Is this a slump? I was excited when she got off in this game to 4 quick points and thought she was on the way back to her usual self, but then she scored 2 more points the rest of the game. The rest of the stat line was also below her usual. Time to figure out a way of rebuilding her shooting confidence and getting her started again. We have had some other senior stars who slumped about this time in the season. Williams last year ran down a little, for example.
I wonder how much, if any, of our So Cal trip will come off this week. Will be nice to see Jump back.

Nice gritty win. As others mention - great for this team to feel confident they can pull out a win against a top 10 opponent even when a couple of the ‘stars’ are having an off night.
One note watching the game was how much we got killed on defense when Reese and Pellington turned it into a 2 on 2 game with Reese setting a high screen on Wilson, and then popping out for a midrange jumper.
Wondering if given the height difference there if Lacie would have been a better option. On Lacie, nice to see her take a few shots and a drive or two to the basket. Forces defenses to respect that more.

And I did also think the FT% emphasis a bit misleading as documented above. I feel like Brink has been shooting quite well from the line the last couple weeks. Has she lowered her release point at the line? Releasing from her chin level as opposed to her forehead?

Pellington - Reese and Pellington - Arizona were much more effective when Brink was not in the game. Pellington got blocked on at least two drives and stopped trying to take it all the way to the rim when Brink was guarding the middle. That took away her excellent ball and body control on drives but also took away the option of drawing the defense down to the rim to open up three point shooters. They were smart to focus on some mid range shots when the rim was protected. But, thanks to Jana, we had more options for scoring than they did and came out on top. They weren't able to get Brink in foul trouble even though that was clearly part of their strategy and Reese's over aggressive defense early took her out of the game for long stretches. Great win in overcoming the crazy inconsistency of a Missy Barlow game. We were good enough that we overcame the variation you get from any officiating but it is especially important to take care of business in a Missy game.
Also, the crowd wasn't as big as I had hoped but was really into the game and had an impact by showing true (not scoreboard prompted) support through cheering and rumbling of the collapsible seats.
Cheers,
Pete F.

Great comments/observations on the game. My $.02:
1. Brink is a double-double rolling out of bed (or should be, anyway). She stays out of foul trouble and injury, a double-double should be her baseline. Honestly. She was dominant tonight, but not in a "let's feed Brink all the time" way . . . which is so much better!
2. Biggest shot of the game: Lacie's trey from the left baseline. H.uge shot.
3. Reese impressed me, too. She may have been 3/13 on those "other shots," but a few of them were halfway down, before somehow crawling out. She easily could have had 2-3 more made buckets.
4. Generally speaking, Arizona shot the ball well, particularly when you consider they made some tough, very contested shots. Again, color me impressed.
5. I'm in BillBradley's camp re: liking the way the game was officiated. Having said that, there was one female fan sitting behind us a few rows who was constantly questioning the refs "what are you watching?" or something like that. Loved it (even if I thought most all of the calls were legit).
6. A couple of the AZ players look incredibly strong/well-developed in the weight room. Yeaney and Erdogan, in particular. Maybe Stanford's football team should hire away whomever is the S&C person for the women hoopsters in Tucson.
7. Anna Wilson is going to play a ton in conference and NCAA tournament games.
P.S. Bob, thanks for arranging the get-together. Didn't chat with many (beyond jskass - nice meeting you), but I can say this with confidence: Bobk is an ageless wonder. And your T&F hat is money!

agree with all comments made, though would add an emphasis on Belibi's improvement and reliability on offense. My husband loves her footwork (though I would add I had to restrain him a few times on the phantom calls on us and the times we were being knocked senseless without a foul called on AZ).
AZ was sometimes too predictable - as in their strategy to "be physical" with Brink -- as in when Copeland entered the game and immediately committed an obvious and called foul, knocking her over right in front of our faces. Kudos to Brink for not only an excellent game (shooting, rebounds and blocks) but also for her overcoming this adversity. Can't wait for her to add some weights and use a hook shot.
Still would like to have a flopping rule. Appeared that when Yeaney was 'fouled' she got up laughing. Oscar nomination on the fall.
And great speaking with fellow Cardboarders after the 2nd quarter (right back at you Teejers).

Brink and Copeland have as diametrically opposed body types as can be imagined. It was like watching a flamingo battle a runaway 18-wheeler. Both Cam and Fran had some great moves down low tonight.
