I don't think Tara gave a presser after the WSU win, but WSU coach Kamie Ethridge did.  It is not on youtube but on the WSU athletics site, you may have to hunt a bit:
https://wsucougars.com/sports/womens-basketball
"They can switch 1-5 and you can't hardly find a mismatch."

She thought her defense was not perfect but somewhat OK.  She told her team before the game that they would have to score 70 to have a chance--that was prophetic.  But she credits Stanford's defense for the lopsided nature of the game.

A little silly note: The male announcer had trouble pronouncing Bosgana. The funniest version was "Bogzanya."

We talked about how everyone on the team seemed to like each other and how happy they seemed.  Interestingly, they said that the team is just now starting to really come together.  They said that there has been some struggles earlier in the season with team cohesion.  That was news to me, but explains some of the off games we've seen.

I told them that they should play with Cam in the Family Division at the Spokane 3-on-3 Hoopfest.  They said that both of them have really bad knees and can't play anymore.  They seemed like really nice people.

Here's my travel story . . .

WSU is situated in the Palouse and has the reputation of being "in the sticks."

I'm coming from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and driving to Pullman.  I plug-in the WSU coliseum in Google maps on my phone and it gives me the route.  It's a little under 2 hours drive.  Apparently the fastest route to the basketball arena avoids going through downtown Pullman.  I'm not sure how much time it saves since Pullman isn't exactly a grand metropolis.

About 90 minutes into the drive, Google tells me to make a right turn.  I dutifully follow the instructions and a couple of miles later find myself on a dirt road.  For about 10 miles I drive on a dusty pot-holed gravel road!  Then I turn left onto Highway 27 and proceed to Pullman.

So, yes, WSU is in the sticks.

I drove the back roads of Benewah, Kootenai, Shoshone and Latah counties growing up.  Not too bad on the western side of the counties with their rolling hills and wheat fields.  The twisty roads in the eastern parts of the counties going through the mountains is a different story and are to be avoided, particularly at night and in the winter.  I wouldn't trust my GPS in most of North Idaho or Eastern Washington.  Many "dirt" roads are not open/maintained in the winter.  I had a summer job working for the Idaho Dept of Lands, and we were sent to open roads (remove fallen trees, unclog culverts, and identify maintenance issues) in order to have access in case of fires.

You have not been in the sticks if you think Pullman is there.  It has traffic lights and multiple McDonald's.  Visit Avery, Enaville or Elk River in the summer to be in the sticks.

If you had gone down early, you could have visited Princeton, Harvard and Stanford, Idaho.  They are on the road between Potlatch and Deary.  There also was a Yale but it is no longer exists (not that Stanford is much today).  Santa, Idaho is not too far away as well.

There is a North Pole not too far from where I live.

I had not heard of North Pole.  Would have passed by it on 95 many times on the way to high sports events.

It's very near Athol, ID, which is very near the Silverwood amusement park.

I have been to Silverwood a few times, so I am familiar with where it is.

OT. Massachusetts had a prominent politician named Endicott Peabody. There were two versions of the joke about his name.

SFW version: There are three towns in MA named after him: Endicott, Peabody, and Marblehead.

NSFW version: There are three towns in MA named after him: Endicott, Peabody, and Athol.

May help to read the second one out loud. May also give Marty some ideas.

RE: WBB: Stanford 71 -- WSU 38 - martyup - 02-06-2023

Athol, Idaho, was first known as Colton.  The town was renamed Athol by a settler who came from Athol, Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Athol was named after a town in Scotland named for the Duke of Atholl. No one knows for sure if Athol, Idaho, was named by a descendent of the same family or if the name was just brought west during the 19th Century.

How would you like to be the Athol Mayor?

RE: WBB: Stanford 71 -- WSU 38 - 81alum - 02-07-2023

All the Idaho talk has my head spinning.  I grew up there, although in the southwestern part of the state, although I have relatives in Coeur d'Alene now.  Northern Idaho might as well have been on a different planet to me in those days--different time zone, terrible highway connection, and quite different economically and culturally too.

Coming across other people from Idaho--from any part of the state--has been a very rare occurrence for me ever since I went away to college.   Somewhat interesting (though not exactly a shock) to find out there is some kind of mini-community of Stanford people with Idaho connections.  Stanford has always drawn well from the intermountain west, as the nearest elite university.

And, of course, to make this relevant to Stanford WBB:  Tara got her coaching start at the University of Idaho, going 42-14 over two years.

Let’s not forget our former player from Idaho who is Tara’s boss

OK Bob, you stumped me on this.  I just could not figure it out.  So I looked up a list of Idaho's best WBB players, and solved the puzzle.

Heather Owen.

I did not know she was from Idaho.  And most people think of Muir as Tara's boss, although it seems he is her boss's boss.

What a clever trivia question!  You really are good at that!

Well most trivia I get from Phogge

I grew up in St Maries which is a lumber town with a large plywood mill.  The population now is similar to what it was when I was in high school.  (It is off the main highways and accessed only by boat from Coeur d'Alene or a few crooked, mountainous roads. Took us 16 hours in a school bus to get to the state basketball tournament in Pocatello, and we went through Montana to get there.

Went to The College of Idaho before transferring to Stanford in the early 80's.  I knew about a half dozen other students from Idaho when I was at Stanford.  There were not many of us.

Did not know that Tara had started her coaching career at Idaho.  Great piece of trivia.

Wow!  My father was a Professor at the C of I--I grew up a faculty brat in Caldwell.  He retired in 1983, so you probably overlapped with him before you left for Stanford.

The College of Idaho produced two awesome athletes in the 50s. Who were they ?
