The timing of the game I am most concerned about is CO, because we play UCLA on Monday and have to travel to play them on a Thursday. CO plays Sunday so they have an advantage. The end of the season being so compressed going into the grind of the P-12 tournament is not ideal.

Would anyone guess what day Stanford would arrive in Boulder since the game is on a Thursday? No matter how conditioned our players are; it's at sea level. I don't know if a 1-day practice on Wednesday is enough time to acclimate the team to a 7,000+' altitude. I know it's a different sport, but when I used to race long distance, I needed almost a week to acclimate. If only 1 day, that may impact our starters in the 4th. quarter.

The NBA actually changed the way it interprets rules to make jumping into a defender an offensive fall after James Harden made a killing that way.

So Haley can play defense. Her coaches must have got on her for being singularly responsible for half of Arizona’s first half points.
Now that we know she can play defense, I hope this trend continues. Again I think resting her helps (not just in blowouts) but the coaches holding her accountable to play both sides of the ball.
I am interested to see if this trend of maximizing her bench continues in next week’s games. It’s easier to do that in blowouts. Tara seemed frustrated in the 3rd and 4th and put Brink back into a blowout game. Bottomline, her starters regularly make mistakes. Her bench players don’t need to walk on eggshells. Of course they won’t be able to come into a game and be flawless. They don’t have enough experience 4 weeks until Selection Sunday. They have to be able to play through their mistakes like the starters.
Edited to add: Didn’t realize Haley’s lack of an offensive game. We clearly need her to be a reliable 2nd scorer. I hope is not either/or with her because Stanford needs her on both ends of the floor.

Plus west to east travel (granted only one hour time change). And altitude. Gonna be a hell of a week. I hope the team leaves for Boulder asap after the UCLA game.

It takes time. I will enjoy watching Betts as she gradually evolves into a dominant post player over four years at Stanford.
Her passing has improved a lot. She now recognizes when she’s double-teamed under the net and finds the open player. Looks to me like the coaches have drawn up a special play that gets the free player open for a short jumper. Fun to watch her game improve!

Boulder is located at an elevation of 5,430 feet (1,655 m) above sea level, not 7,000+.
On this desert road trip we outscored the Arizona schools 180 to 124, for an average margin of victory of 28 points. That's a pretty good bounce back from our loss to UW.

I am very worried about Colorado and Utah--Utah is undefeated at home, Colorado is 11-1 there, both are at some elevation, both have timing advantages over us, etc. Playing Cal and Stanford is an easier prep than playing Colorado and Utah. Stanford benefits when Cal is a tough team to prepare for and suffers when opponents can invest all their prep time against us.
As far as elevation is concerned, 5000 feet isn't really all that significant. Oxygen content goes from 20% to 17%. I've climbed Whitney at 14,500 and oxygen content drops to 12%, and at that altitude nausea and fatigue is commonplace. So a slight factor at 5000, but not a major one for a youngster. Maybe a big kid like Betts get fatigued at 10 minutes instead of 12. That kind of thing.
On the other hand....it really takes as much as 30 days to acclimate to elevation--the body does not react quickly. So it is true that visiting teams to Utah or to Colorado can be expected to tire slightly faster than the home teams. One day at elevation is nothing as far as acclimation is concerned. Clearly the home teams would have a bigger advantage in an overtime game.
My guess is that Tara will liberally use our bench at the two mountain schools. Never will depth have been more important--particularly in the second game.
BUT--why should we be worried about either of them when we have USC, which has beaten us at sea level, coming to play us in a few days? We can save worrying about the road trip for later.....

YMMV. I did swim meets at 5,000ish feet in high school without getting to do any acclimatization. My experience sprinting at that elevation is that you reach the puke zone much quicker than at sea level. And basketball does require you to do repeats of short max acceleration sprinting. I don't have the VO2 max of a DI basketball player but I was in great shape in high school and that experience was unpleasant enough that I remember it decades later.

Trivia question: what’s the highest state capital in the US? Hint: it’s not Denver.

You only need to try running in Santa Fe once to always remember it’s the answer. Today drove past a sign on 90 in MA Berkshires that declared it the highest point on 90 east of South Dakota… at about 1900 feet.?

Yup, by the 7000s+ it starts to get noteworthy. Mammoth CA is at 7800 and I feel the strain of walking uphill there when coming from sea level. Bishop, by comparison, is 4200 and I feel nothing in particular at that elevation.

Contributing to thread drift regarding altitudes, Death Valley is below sea level. In the 50 states, one other spot is below sea level. Where is it?

Good pun!
Having relocated to Denver in 2020 I have gone from too much water and below sea level to water scarcity and significant altitude. In Denver I get the opportunity to see Stanford teams when they compete at CU, DU, and Air Force. I have tickets for the game in Boulder next Thursday. Any other CardBoarders planning to attend? End of thread drift....
