The box score indicates attendance was 314.

Attendance at Sacred Heart's 1sr two games of their conf. tourney were 155 and 172.  Those games were at their home court, not clear across the country.  (I grant that I didn't check the weather -- they could have been snowed in for all I know.)

Well, perhaps if the bands/cheerleaders and reporters and officials and red vests and security were counted…

A ticket taker when I arrived told me that had sold about 300 tickets

LOL. YES. Folkl can just stand in paint blocking shots, and Nygaard can shoot 3s. I'm sure she's been doing some casually anyway!

Well, my concern levels have gone up.  We don't need Brink or Jones to squash Sacred Heart, but we may need them both to defeat Gonzaga.  My hope is that everyone is healthy by Sunday.  Friday just got more interesting, though.

I don't think a stomach bug would have Brink sitting on the bench in street clothes.  That sounds suspicious.

I can well believe that Jones had a class...tomorrow is the last day of classes for Winter quarter.  Her absence/lateness doesn't worry me--that has a more plausible explanation than Brink.

I'm also a bit concerned that next week is finals.  Not a great thing to be going on if we win the first two and have to go play Texas and Iowa.  Just the way the calendar broke this year.

Hmmm, I think Brink sitting on the bench with a bug sounds perfectly reasonable.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Sacred Heart Friday 4:30 - 76lsjumb - 03-16-2023

If Plan A isn’t available, we go with Plan B: Betts and Belibi dominate tomorrow, and Prechtel channels her Louisville self to get us through on Sunday.

If you had a bug, why would you be sitting on the bench?  If contagious, you would certainly not be there, or anywhere close to the team.

If Brink can't go tomorrow, then I think it is a career night for Betts.

If not Brink, I think we see a lot more of Fran, maybe playing with Betts. Also could be a good opportunity for Kiki to get her verve back

So we're down to what, 6 McD's A-A's? (Belibi, Prechtel, Demetre, Iriafen, Nivar, and Betts) If that group can't handle Sacred Hart and Gonzaga - - with what would remain one of the top talent teams in the country - - we have no business dreaming about the final four. If it comes to it, time for the rest of our team to step up and show what they're made of!

Remember Florida State

Stanford needs to play aggressively in every game, starting with the first game and for the whole game.  Do not take dominance for granted.  Bad things can happen if they do.  In March 2007 they were upset in the NCAA second round by Florida State.  Stanford was ranked #5 nationally and #2 seed in the Tournament.  That team had strong players such as Candice Wigging, Jane Appel,  Brooke Smith and Cissy Pierce.  They were out-shot and out-played by a team that just wanted it more.  So play hungry Cardinal!

This. 1000x this. I'm still haunted by Brooke Smith's reaction.

Yup, that one was in many ways our most disappointing post-season other than the infamous 1998, and given that we did not have two all-Americans injured days before the game, it was less understandable.  Also to add to the list of infamy was our 1999 first round loss to a 10 seed Maine--but we were not seeded as high nor were we at home that year.

What I remember most vividly though was a very close call in 2016.  We beat 12 seed South Dakota State in the second round at Maples 66-65, and I felt we were lucky to do so.  We were behind by 8 points with less than 5 minutes left in the game, we were behind by 2 with 18 seconds left, and with 8 seconds Lili Thompson scored and converted the  +1 to give us the 1 point win.

I walked out of there with weak knees.

Three Articles in today's SF Chron about Stanford and today's game -- the Chron is going all out on paying attention. All three of these are worth reading. None behind a paywall because subscribers can share as a subscriber benefit.

Great Ann Killion column, on front page of sporting section, about how the Card now has a "stone in the shoe" about being an underdog in the tournament that will be motivating

Game preview with comments from players, analysis, key matchups. Also a bit of content re Cam on the bench at practice and the "stomach bug," but says that Haley did participate in practice at the end yesterday.

Vegas thinks our game is a toss up ...We are favored by 43.5 points. Toss up for gamblers. Not sure if we can cover that many points.

Vegas respect and love for Stanford, 2nd highest odds in the 1 vs 16 games:  S Carolina favored by 49.5, Indiana by 29.5, and Virginia Tech by 27.5

It may make a Chronicle believer our of me.  Impressive three stories.  The SJMN had one story today.  It does not seem to have the same sharing link available.  The article did the obligatory comparison to Harvard, and most of our players confessed they did not know about that loss, which happened before any of them had been born.

It is clear from the article that Lepolo and Nivar are going to try to defend Pryor, but that they are mostly counting on our bigs in the paint to force 5'3" Pryor to shoot over them.

The Merc also mentioned that Brink was expected to play tonight.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Sacred Heart Friday 4:30 - WBB fan - 03-17-2023

Chron didn't say whether Brink would play -- glad to hear that from the Merc article which I'm not able to access. Thanks for that, as well as the comment re not knowing about Harvard. Fascinating that the players don't know their Stanford WBB history.

Based on expectations there is not much upside to this game but plenty of downside.  Stanford will have to play near perfect basketball to avoid criticism.  Teams rarely play near perfect basketball.

I don't bet.  It I did bet I would go big on Sacred Heart and take the points.  Even if Stanford were to somehow get close to that margin during the game the bench will get emptied.
