I've never heard that the Big 12 wasn't an option. My understanding was Stanford preferred the ACC as it had more like-minded national research universities. Did you hear otherwise? (The ACC's also a better football conference - Stanford's 2025 recruiting class is #6 in the ACC right now, but would be #3 in the Big 12.)

Stanford Definitely referred the Big 10
The Big 10 and their TV alliance said no

I'm mostly discouraged because our football team isn't very good. And living in Pac 12 country, I have lots of coworkers and neighbors who are alumni of Pac 12 schools.
It will make it much more of a chore to make away games.
For me it was the Pac 10 that I cared about. Colorado and Utah may as well have been out of conference for me. If not for basketball, even Arizona and ASU didn't feel as integral.
Hopefully we'll schedule the Oregon/Washington/California schools frequently, if we can tolerate the competition.

I'm slightly enthused for three reasons.
First, because the ACC is a noticeably better basketball conference than the Pac-12 and it will help Stanford's basketball recruiting on a national scale. Stanford will be a better basketball team as a result.
Second, because I think the ACC is a lesser football conference than the Pac-12. And like you, I was an original Pac-8 fan...the other four? Meh.
But I think we'll do well. I think we'll use the time zone difference to our advantage. We have a home game against TCU at 10:30 p.m., body clock time for TCU players. Conversely, Stanford has a home game against Syracuse at 1:30 and an away game at Note Dame at 12:30 body clock time...that's good for us. It'll be interesting to see how the other games get scheduled. If Stanford beats TCU, which I think is entirely possible...and TCU was 5-7 with an opening-game loss against Colorado last year...the other ACC teams are going to sit up and take notice, and we might have difficulty scheduling evening home games.
And third, because the ACC too will pass. When the conferences realign again in the middle of the next decade, everyone is going to decide that they hate the travel and like the regional rivalries.

The bad news - the next realignment will place Stanford (among others) outside the Power conferences.
The good news - regional competition will resume when the Cardinal join Oregon State, WSU and a bunch of MWC schools to form a new Western Alliance.

Giants that would be terrible news for most Stanford sports. Lesser competition will drive athletes to the top conferences

I wouldn't want to be playing Boise and Fresno every year. That would kill my enthusiasm.

I know what you mean, Bob, but the competition is not just athletic, but frankly financial. No more "40-year decision" anchoring our brand. Until and unless the NCAA puts together a cohesive policy on disclosure of NIL deals, we are just shooting in the dark. Of course, that assumes we know something about what ammo other schools have at their disposal. From what I can tell, some states (e.g. Louisiana) are hiding public knowledge of NIL deals behind the Freedom of Information Act.
IMHO opinion all schools and athletes should be required to disclose terms of all NIL and endorsement deals, including where the money is specifically coming from, and any related incentive clauses. Any athlete failing to do so would be considered "professional" and ineligible for NCAA competition.
Hard to see how level the playing field is when we don't even know the boundaries. Then we can decide if, and how, we want to compete.

I agree 100%.
I hate the idea of a regional conference comprised of select MWC schools, OSU, WSU, Stanford and Cal. It would be nothing more than a gloried version of AAA minor league baseball. The “good news” comment was directed to Mick who suggested, “everyone is going to decide that they hate the travel and like the regional rivalries”.
As for ever getting old PAC-8 gang back together…. That ship has sailed, never to return to port.

First of all I’m a Stanford fan and have paid for the first of season tix. I’m very excited. Could care less about the ACC but beats all to H not being in a strong athletic league
Qwerty I’m sure you know when talking NIL it’s not necessarily thru the school. Brink with many deals Haley Jones with her Shoe deal for instance and other WBB and WVB I’m aware of
To two coaches I have talked to or chalk talks the 40 year decision is alive a well and the recruiting shows that

Okay, let's assume that regional conference. Let's say those schools, for a variety of reasons, recruit really well, have excellent attendance, and NFL rosters are packed with alums from those schools, compared with other conferences. Even Stanford's games will be packed when Stanford goes 11-2.
How would you feel about it then?

My reaction would be “who cares?” Right now .stanford is a national school with a national fan base. People outside of California , Washington and Oregon could care less about Oregon State , Washington State. They do t even know where the MWC schools are and that’s true even if you spot them the Mountain and the West. Further, the level of athlete we would be attracting to Stanford would be MWC level.
Stanford stands for excellence . We would be better off not playing then being in a MWC like conference.
Sorry if that comes across as harsh. But we are not all sequestered in the west coast.

No thanks. Competing at the highest level the sport provides is what matters. Beating Air Force, Wyoming and San Diego St. means nothing in the big picture.
Stanford has proven they can compete successfully against the best. I want to see the Cardinal continue to play the premier programs regardless where they are based.

I just think one measure of accounting that should stick is self-reporting by the athletes. The other is a compilation by the schools, which they will need for their own purposes (including recruiting).
We will just have to disagree on the 40-year decision. If a kid can make several million in NIL by the time they graduate, Stanford may have very little to do with it. Brink was Brink and Jones was Jones. Being at Stanford didn't enhance their NIL financial prospects IMHO. They would have been stars anywhere they went, and the money would have followed.
Just my opinion. I can't automatically keep the Cardinal-colored glasses on for this one. I'd like to know some numbers on how competitive Lifetime Cardinal and any other NIL entities at our disposal are making us.

I think joining the ACC was Cal and Stanford's only hope of staying at P5 level for the foreseeable future. ACC should have picked up WA State and OR State. Would have made it at least reasonable for Cal and Stanford to have west coast opponents.

Who was going to pay WSU and OSU? They would be worth less than the pittance Cal and Stanford are getting. Will they take 0 like SMU?

SMU gets the ACC into Texas. If you don’t recruit well in .texas, Florida and California and you aren’t I the SEC, you don’t do well. Plus SMU ready, willing and able to put many millions into their athletic program. Right now, the lose out To Texas in the TV market even though Texas is in Austin. But if they excel, and I suspect they will, the ACC will do very well in the DFW TV market. that’s brobdingnagian. So recruiting and ad $ are what SMU brings to the ACC

As far as support ("market") for teams in Texas, at least in the 60s and 70s, it was where you and your buddies went to school, not what city you live in. Then there's the factor about how far they go after graduation.
Texas is filled with grads of UT-Austin and quite a few Texas Aggies. SMU, U. of Houston, Rice, Texas Tech not so much. College Station only has a population of 125,000 even now; Austin MSA 2.5M, DFW MSA 8.1M, Houston MSA 7.5M, San Antonio MSA 2.7M (SF MSA 4.6M)
In my family, before any one went to any of the SWC schools, Texas was by far the biggest name athletic school, presumably because of news coverage in Houston in the early 60s.
Things may have changed in the last 50 years, but I think not.
At 52,000 students (Fall 2023), UT-Austin is still filling the state of Texas. Texas A&M indicates they have 73,000 students.
At 12,000 students, SMU likely falls behind both UT-Austin AND Tx A&M in alumni in the DFW area (and Houston, and San Antonio, and Austin)
