- Need Ogden to stay out of foul trouble. She's a big part of the winning formula going forward. Needed way more than 14 minutes from her today.
- Demetre on the block is a weapon. Hopefully that can become a go-to play for us.
- Nunu struggled a bit more against more talented bigs. She'll continue to get better, and is a bright spot, but she can't do it all. She's just not good enough yet to takeover.
- Bosgana - still inconsistent. Makes it so hard to know how to play her. She can stay on the court if she defends and rebounds, unlike today.
- Harriel also needs to improve D to stay on the court.
- Agree with other posters, thought Clardy earned more minutes (again).
- Stevenson - made some good plays and could play an important role coming off the bench to spell Agara/Demetre. Like others, needs to be more consistent.
- Heal - maybe can be a sparkplug? Still haven't made my mind up about her. I like a lot of her game, but she's been so ineffective - just not sure she's talented enough.
- Lepolo... this year's team is just way different. It's no longer good enough for her to be "solid", take care of the ball, play good D, and let Cam, Kiki, Hannah etc. make all the offensive plays. That's more how a backup point guard plays. Maybe that should be her position.
I like a core group of Agara, Demetre, Ogden, Harriel, Clardy, all playing ~30 minutes if they can stay out of foul trouble. Sub Bosgana for Ogden, Heal for Harriel, Stevenson for Demetre/Agara, Lepolo for Clardy. If Bosgana is rebounding, let her play some at the 4 too.
I agree with this core group. Put Shay in when you need energy and pressing defense. Would have liked to see Kennedy today since nothing else was working.

Try YouTube TV. About $70/month but works for me. I still keep Sling around but honestly I’m not sure if seeing every game is that important to me this year.

Says Indiana took away the three and we needed to respond better by taking it to the basket. We did not do so well enough. "This will help our team improve."
"Offensively and defensively it gives us a really good to-do list."

Heal's schtick of driving to the hoop in a wild attempt to draw a foul is not working so far this season. It apparently worked at Santa Clara.
Yep. I think she's drawn one foul. Otherwise, can't get it to the hoop. Not playing vs Pepperdine, San Diego and LMU. Defense also needs attention. But, she will get better and she can definitely shoot the three...when open.

Same here, I agree with BIllBradley's suggestion to try out a starting group of AGARA, DEMETRE, OGDEN, HARRIEL and CLARDY, with BOSGANA, HEAL, STEVENSON and LEPOLO coming off the bench. Also, stanford22's suggestion of using IWIJOYE off the bench as am energy bunny on. defense.

...playing in the WCC with likely the same crew working Pac-12 games, ergo, whistle-happy. The one exception to the Pac-12 stream of whistles was Brenda Pantoja, who worked today's game. She rarely whistles guards. Also, no doubt, has nightmares about guarding Kate Paye as a student-athlete.

But it sure seems that we are simply not as good as our record indicated, and Indiana was not as bad as their record indicated. There is also a fair bit of "live by the three and die by the three" going on. Our earlier success was set up by hot three point shooting, and in the last two games we did not start out hot from three and the entire offense became anemic. Only 9 assists for the game, similar to UC Davis.
My greatest disappointment today was with our defense. We let Indiana play very pretty basketball.
Indiana has something to do with their own victory, of course, cutting turnovers from 20 to 5 and dramatically upping their shooting accuracy.
We have had some rough losses early in seasons past, and what made Tara such a wonderful coach was the way the team kept improving all throughout the year. We will see if Kate can do equally well at helping our team to improve. We have talent, but we may not always have the right talent on the floor in the right combination at the right time playing the right tactics. Time for Kate to start showing her coaching prowess.
We lost today for three primary reasons:
(1) We do not have enough height
(2) We have no one who is yet ready to take their team on their back and keep them together. Demetre might be the logical choice but she does not seem to have the competitive personality. Agara is close but needs a little more confidence.
(3) The referees were inconsistent and frequently wrong.
I wish Demetre would shoot more. I think she could score 20 a game easily and probably shoot 50%. She looks for the pass before the shot.
I think the wrong players are getting the minutes. Ogden, Clardy, and Iwijoye should play more minutes. Lepolo and Bosgana should play fewer.
RE: WBB: Indiana 79 Stanford 66 -

I think there is something of a consensus forming, with room for differences in emphasis.
1) Clardy is emerging as our best option at point guard, although I also could see Harriel winning that spot. Harriel was reputedly our best three point shooter in practice even in those years when she was almost entirely on the bench, and she shot better than Jump last year. This year is no fluke for her, although she has had a couple of less than impressive games. Harriel also has more assists and a better assist/turnover ratio than any other guard so far. Either way, those are the two guards we want on the floor unless there are specific defensive match up issues. This is early season, though, and all the other guards have a shot at improving their play enough to change our thinking. Lepolo is definitely not 100% back from her surgery, although her offense has seldom been what we need it to be to open up driving lanes even when she was fully healthy. Heal can be impressive and I would not count her out, although she is certainly having some adjustment problems. Ijiwoye needs a lot more experience, but her potential on defense is obvious.
2) Agara is just a sophomore. Let me repeat that. A sophomore. She will continue to get better both in terms of basketball skills as well as leadership skills. I saw growth from her today. She was more demonstrative, without letting it get out of control. Kate says she wants Agara to more of a grizzly bear than a teddy bear. I saw a little grizzly today. By the end of the season she could be reaching Nneka's sophomore levels. She will be the person to put the team on her back, but she is adjusting to the new role. Hard to be the team's leader when there are senior starters and you are a sophomore.
3) As for the Ogden/Bosgana controversy, I am undecided as yet, but delighted that Ogden is finally coming along. Even earlier this season she often looked flustered and forced up bad shots around the rim. Her play has certainly improved. But Bosgana has also had some excellent games this season, although not this one. I think there is plenty of room for the two of them to compete, but I agree that Ogden deserves more minutes. I also think that there will be times we need them both on the floor, for their height.
4) Demetre's step back jumper is just unstoppable when she is "on." I agree that she needs to be more of a featured offensive weapon. She needs to be a bit more selfish. She did well today despite the foul trouble.

Only thing I would remind us of is that adjustment factor alluded to in the comment (though negative) about Heal. First and correct me if I am wrong, but often the ‘bigs’ would take a little longer to develop and learn the system. I seem to recall they often made the biggest leap into sophomore year, so maybe MA (first year at Stanford) and Kennedy will be much stronger next year. Perhaps some of the same learning curve applies to Heal who while technically a junior, is in the same position.
Completely agree w everything said above especially w Ogden (who seems to be developing more and perhaps also more consistency than Bosgana, who can be brilliant at times) as well as w Clardy and Harriel having larger roles than Lepolo. Also, I am taking the mental shortcut of thinking of Shay this year akin to Chloe last year as a quick defensive player who develops shots more by next year.

It seemed to me that Indiana was taking advantage of the Stanford switches. We seem to be a half-step slow on them, letting players get open.
And obviously, we had a number of cases where defenders were off their guarded players and couldn't close out to disrupt a 3pt shot.
I think some of the lessons learned will come from the 4th quarter.
The time out called at 24-30 (Q2 7:00) didn't help much. It was 4 minutes until we scored again, during which the opponent scored 10 points.
The first 5 minutes of Q3 was 4-5 in terms of score. So, no effective change during halftime.
