RE: Men's soccer 2025 -

There are times when a men's college soccer game is a joy to watch, as one or both teams put together long sequences of passes, display creativity, and create numerous chances. There are other times when a game becomes tedious, marred by numerous long kicks, often sent ahead with hope rather than a plan; multiple sequences of headers going in both directions that start to resemble a pinball game; and seeming innumerable throw-ins and free kicks. Tonight's game against USF -- especially the second-half -- was mostly of the second category. Long throw-in after long throw-in by UCF was particularly unesthetic.
Very glad that Stanford came away with a well-deserved win, but it was painful to watch. Hoping for better soccer over the final two games.

Last night’s game was a total slog.

I somewhat disagree, but I guess it depends on how you define slog. This was 2 pretty good teams and there wasn’t a lot of boot ball in this one. SMU though was pretty happy to sit back and pick their spots to counter and get forward despite maybe needing a win. They also defended well. The end result was a lot of Stanford possession, but very few results from said possession. SMU actually had better chances overall - especially the wide open header they missed with about 17:30 left.
Islam is badly missed in a game like this. So we got a bunch of crosses to nowhere and a couple of set piece chances with no goals. Definitely a game where Stanford needed to be more patient and more varied n their play.
But a tie against SMU won’t hurt much in the grand scheme. My bigger worry is how long is Islam out? The offense is not the same without him.

Also the announcers said that Pymm will miss the next game vs. Cal as a result of receiving a yellow card last night, his 5th of the season.

I experienced the game against SMU just as you described, Hieronymous. I thought the quality of the soccer was much better than the USF roller derby of long boots/series of pinball-like headers/numerous violent tackles/set piece (throw-in) mania.
I wonder if anyone else has the sense that early in games, Stanford plays the long ball a lot so as to condition the opposition to expect that. Then as the opponent falls back, they try to build more from the back.
As in years past, Stanford struggles to master good defenses. It seems to me that they prefer to try to score with cross, and I often wish they would try to more directly attack from the middle via an individual taking on his defender, intricate passes, or blasts from distance, which could result in rebounds. With that said, I acknowledge that if a team is content to sit back and hope for a counter, as did SMU, it's tough to score. Even when a team loses a player to a red card, it can be tough to get good scoring chances 11 v. 10 if a team is hunkered down.
Per my perspective, SMU and Oregon State have been the best teams that Stanford has faced all year. SMU is next at home against 2nd place Virginia. I believe an SMU win or tie would allow Stanford to win the ACC if they tie Cal. Virginia is a point behind Stanford in the standings. NC State, which could finish tied with Stanford if NC State wins their last game and Stanford ties, has played almost completely different ACC opponents than Stanford this year, as I think the only common opponents will have been Pitt and Syracuse. Stanford is 2-0 versus those teams, whereas NC State tied Pitt (and plays Syracuse on Friday), which I believes gives Stanford the tie-breaker with NC State.
Re the accumulated yellow cards, a player is suspended for the next game if he gets 5 in the regular season. Once the postseason begins, which I believe includes conference tournaments, a player is not suspended until his eighth yellow card. (Which could involve a second suspension in the case of Jack Pymm.) Given that Dylan Groeneveld and Tomo Allen have four yellow cards each, per last night's broadcast, they have to be especially careful to avoid #5 against Cal. (And how did Tomo Allen rack up so many in the relatively limited time that he has played?) Groeneveld can have a short fuse, so at the first sign of his getting revved up, I'd sub him out.

Tomo gets his money’s worth for his cards is how I would phrase it. I don’t think any of them this year have been questionable. Dylan has been about the same, though in many more minutes.
That said they get cards in very different ways. Dylan still is learning CB and has had some “oh hell” five alarm fire moments. Tomo instead seems to go “well I am a forward and this is low risk so why not try to run through the defender who happens to be in my way and see what happens?” In fairness as a sub in limited minutes, he isn’t that wrong as long as he doesn’t get number 5 vs. Kal. Longer run he is a big guy and needs to be sneakier with his fouls.

I was at the game last night, got my scarf, and wholly agree with Spike.
It was just long kick after long kick. Not a lot of movement inside the attach zone. I thought a tie was just as neither team generated much danger, with a few exceptions.

Stanford went to Berkeley today for the regular season finale with a chance to clinch the ACC regular season championship. For the 2nd consecutive year, Cal beat Stanford. And for the 2nd straight week, Stanford was shut out. The team is slumping.
Even so, Stanford finished 2nd in the standings and I expect will open the ACC tournament vs. #15 BC. Had Stanford won, they would have received a first round bye.

Why does the men's ACC men's soccer championship include all 15 teams while the women's only involves 6 teams?

In WSoc, there are 17 teams in the ACC (GTech and Miami do not have MSoc). I guess its is too unwieldy to have all 17 teams in the tournament. (I suppose one could have some number other than only six teams in the WSoc tournament, but that's what they ended up with.)

Stanford spotted BC a 2-0 lead in the first half before scoring the next 4 goals for a 4-2 win. Stanford hosts #7 seed SMU on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

We won yesterday 4-2 in the first round of the ACC tournament.
Soccer doesn’t seem to be very popular on the Cardboard. Too bad because we field two great teams this year.

This is not unique to the ACC. The pattern holds across many D1 conferences: ACC (15 men vs. 6 women), Big East (all 12 men vs. 6 women), Big Ten (all 9 men vs. 8 women), and Pac-12 (all 6 men vs. 4 women before most of the teams left and it stopped sponsoring men's soccer post 2023). I've seen 3 reasons mentioned for this disparity:
1) Most men's conference tournaments began in the 1970s–80s when conferences had 8–10 teams and included everyone by default. Tradition stuck even as leagues grew.
2) Women’s soccer has traditionally been more top heavy than men's soccer so they set up more limited fields when their tournaments were added.
3) The men’s NCAA selection date is a week later than the women's games, leaving a wider window for conference tournament games.

I've been slammed; I do plan to follow the team in the NCAA tourney as I expect them to make it. I didn't know about the injury/yellow card situation--that's worrisome.

Pac-12 hasn't had a conference soccer tournament for at least 10 years.

Thanks for that correction. I had looked up a source to double-check but the source was wrong. Should have gone to an official site.

Similar, have been on the road with terrible internet for a major project milestone, but I am slowly catching up.
So belatedly…
- pretty standard men’s game - do they score first or get caught on the counter?
- in this game the correct answer was “caught on the counter for $1000 Alex.”
- actually is was caught 3 times in the first half for 2 goals. Not good.
- The first was a 50+ yard through ball. Up the middle. On the ground. Yikes. Dylan beat by speed.
- goal 2, Alfonso fell down isolated 1 v 1. Doh.
- in fairness it wasn’t all the CB’s fault as L/RB were way forward. That said Cleary scored 2 goals from RB so it was a 2 edged sword.
- first time though all year the CB conversion experience blew a gasket. Or 3.
- Dylan subbed at half and Palmer moved to LCB I expect to get more speed in the middle of the defense.
- fortunately BC isn’t very good; so the men were able to take this one back. against a better team though this ends poorly.

Men lose a game 1:0 they had little business losing. But no finishing and an unnecessary PK will do that. No Zach for unknown reasons - he was on the bench in uniform - and little Islam certainly hurt the offense. Stanford did very little after giving up the PK a few minutes after Tomo missed a near sitter. One decent header is all I remember after the penalty. But not a great closing stretch to the regular season. Not sure they get or deserve a seed.

Men at 10 in the RPI which I think is actually up a spot. I expect they will get a seed then - something from 8-14 range likely
