We cannot undervalue the loss of those two enough. DeCastro was a h.uge part of our stellar run game as was Martin. You don't just replace two 1st round draft pick OLs and expect to operate as is. I've heard analysts says DeCastro is the best pulling guard prospect of the last 10 years. Next year, the running game may not be what it has been the past three seasons. Hopefully the young guys step in, but you gotta expect it's going to be an overall step backward.
Side note: can someone explain to me why the software doesn't allow you to write h.uge?

Replacing DeCastro and Martin is going to tough. Really tough. But one thing I was very encouraged by was the ability of the coaching staff to replace 3 starters along the OLine fairly seemlessly. None of the people departing was going to get drafted in the first round, but I was concerned that the new offensive line coaches, and the players on the roster, might not be up to the task. Instead, what we got was David Yankey and Cameron Fleming becoming two extremely strong linemen, players that will get some notice going in to next season as potentially two of the stronger linemen in the Pac-12; and Sam Schwartzstein becoming a solid replacement for Chase Beeler. If we use this year as a model, we can expect some struggles in the first few games of the season (making the early-season show down with USC especially tough; they are hard to keep off the QB even when the line is cohesive), but I would expect the OLine to become a strength again as the season moves on. That is absolutely critical. Ever since watching the Dallas Cowboys of the 1990s I've come to appreciate how much a great OLine can control a game: forces the d to adjust, thus making play-action effective; keeps the offense on the field and wears out the opposing defense; keeps YOUR defense on the sidelines, giving them time to rest and perhaps make minor in-game adjustments.Â
Wouldn't it be great if Stanford can become known as O Lineman University? Be one of the first places talented and smart OL prospects think about because we have a tradition of developing studs. A lot easier to find and develop stud lineman than star QBs (though we have a decent track record in that area as well).Â
